FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, atler the draft finalized by the Optical andMathematical Instruments Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

This standard specifies the requirements of different profiles of mechanical cut through stencil templates and pentips for amplified Devnagri letters. 1S9609( Part 5 ): 1998 ‘Lettering on technical drawings: Part 5 Amplified Devnagriletters’ to be used in conjunction with the standard has been published, which specifies proportions and establishesdimensions of amplified Devnagri letters for use in technical drawings and associated documents.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particularly requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2: 1960 ‘Rules forrounding off numerical values ( revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should bethe same as that of the specified value in this standard.

SPECIFICATION FOR HINDI ( DEVNAGRI ) STENCILTEMPLATES AND PEN TIPS

1 SCOPE

This standard covers the requirements of mechanicaltype cut-through stencil templates and pen tips.

2 REFERENCES

The following Indian Standard contains provisionswhich through reference in this text, constitutesprovision of this standard. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. The standard is subjectto revision, and parties to agreements based on thisstandard are encouraged to investigate the possibilityof applying the most recent edition of the standardindicated below:

1SNo. Title

9609 ( Part 5 ): Lettering on technical drawings1998 Part 5 Amplified devnagri letters

3 TYPES

3.1 The following four types (patterns) of stenciltemplates are recommended.

3.1.1 Pattern A

Onepiecestenciltemplate, mouldedor milledwithunequalwidth of side strips ( see Fig. 1 ).

3.1.2 Pattern B

One piece stencil template, moulded or milled havingequal width of side strips ( see Fig. 2 ).

3.1.3 Pattern C

Composite template having plastic channels pastedor attached on long edges ( see Fig. 3 ).

3.1.4 Pattern D

Composite template having metallic channels pastedor attached on long edges ( see Fig. 4 ).

4 MATERIALS

4.1 Stencil templates shall be made of colouredplastics, such as butrate or polymethyl methacrylate( acrylics) or rigid polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylchloride copolymer.

4.2 The material shall be transparent, bright and cleanand shall be reasonably free from spores, blisters, porosity, bubbles, scratches and similar other defects.

4.3 In case of pattern ‘C’ templates the channels shallbe made from hard plastics. In case of pattern ‘D’templatesthe channels shall be made of suitableanodized

aluminium section or any other suitable metal havingadequate finish.

4.4 The pen tips shall be made of non-magnetic stainlesssteel.

5 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

5.1 The grooves for letters, numerals and other symbolson the templates shall be such as to reproduce thesecharacters in conformity with IS 9609( Part 5 ). Therecommended permissible tolerances are given inTable 1 for characters having line thickness to heightratio of 1:14 only.

5.2 Stencil templates shall be rectangular in shapehaving fully moulded milled or machined edges. Thecomposite templates shall have plastic or metallicchannels on the two long edges.

5.3 The grooving shall be in straight line along, longedges which shall be parallel to each other.

5.4 The templates shall normally have one engravedline with Hindi alphabets. A separate template shallbe used for numerals and mathematical symbols.

5.5 Stencil templates with 10 mm, 14 mm and 20 mmletter heights may be made in more than one piece soas to cover all of Hindi alphabets.

5.6 Minimum width of the templates shall be 25 mm.

5.7 Minimum gap between the paper surface and thebottom of the grooved portion of the template shallbe one millimetre, when kept in the working position.

5.8 Minimum blank space on either side of charactersshall be 10mm.

5.9 Minimum distance from either edge of the stenciltemplate to the relative base line of characters shal Ibe 10mm ( excluding ‘matras’ ).

5.10 Minimum thickness of the grooved portion ofthe stencil template shall be 0.7 mm.

5.11 The recommended sizes of the tips to be usedwith the stencil templates shall be as given in theTable 1, read with Fig. 5. The diameters d, of the tipshall be such that with the pen held vertically and theline drawn at a speed of 2 to 4 centimetre per second, the permissible tolerances for the line width specifiedare not exceeded. For this purpose, the ink recommendedby the manufacturer and the smooth tracing paper 90to 95 g/m2 shall be used.

5,12 The design of the pen shall be left to themanufacturer as far as it covers the requirement of pentips given in 4.4( see Fig. 5).

6 WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH

The characters shall be uniformly and neatly engravedor moulded. The workmanship and finish shall be ofthe best grade and to the entire satisfaction of thepurchaser.

7 TESTS

The templates and pen tips shall satisfy therequirements given in 3, 4 and 5.

8 MARKING

8.1 The stencil templates and the pens shall be markedwith the manufacturers name or trade-mark and theyear of manufacture.

8.2 The templates shall also be marked with the patternof templates, the height of the character, d/h ratio and

the size of the pen to be used while the pen shall bemarked with its size.

8.3 BIS Certification Marking

8.3.1 The templates may also be marked with theStandard Mark.

8.3.2 The use of the Standard Mark is governed bythe provisions of Bureau oflndian Standards Act, 1986and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. Thedetails of conditions under which a licence for the useof Standard Mark maybe granted to the manufacturersor the poducers may be obtained from the Bureau ofIndian Standards.

9 PACKING

9.1 Each template and the pen shdll be, individuallypacked in a polythene bag or in a suitable cont, iner.A full set of templates shall be packed in a suitablepacking case for transit and storage.
