SPECIFICATION FORPYRETHRUM DUSTING POWDERS

(First Revision)

O. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 29 January 1982, after the draft finalized by thePest Control Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agriculturaland Food Products Division Council and the Chemical Division Council.

0.2 Pyrethrum dusting powders containing 0.2 percent ( mlm ) pyrethrinsare extensively used in the control of insect pests of agricultural importance,especially in grain storage.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1971. The standard is being revisedto align it to the methods of identity and test as prescribed in IS :1051-1980*.

0.4 In the preparation of this standard, due consideration has been givento the provisions of the Insecticides Act, 1968 and the Rules framed there-under. However, this standard is subject to the restrictions imposed underthese, wherever applicable.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressingthe result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS : 2-1960t. The number of significant places retained in the rounded offvalue should be the same as that of the specified value in thk standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of samplingand test for pyrethrum dusting powders.

2. REQUIREMENTS2.1 Description and Identity

2.1.1 Description — The material shall be in the form of powder, freeflowing and devoid of lumps. The material when dusted through a handrotary duster shall issue freely without clogging or bridging. It shall befree from synthetic pyrethroids.

2.1.2 Identi~ — The material shall comply with the Ident;ty Test asdescribed under Appendix A of IS : 1051-1980* and shall not containany synthetic pyrethroid. If any spots, in addition to those given by thestandard reference sample are detected, it should be ensured that theseadditional spots are not due to any synthetic pyrethroid. If the presenceof any synthetic pyrethroid is established in the TLC testing, the totalpyrethrin content as described under Appendix B of IS : 1051-1980*should not be determined as the synthetic pyrethroid would analyse wronglyas pyrethrins.

2.2 Colour — The material shall be whitish to brown in colour.

2.3 The material shall also comply with the requirements given in Table 1.

2.3.1 Total Pyrethrin Content—When determined by the method pres-cribed in Appendix B of 1S : 1051-1980*, the observed total pyrethrincontent, percent by mass, of any of the samples shall not differ from thenominal total pyrethrin content percent by mass by more than the tolerancelimits indicated below:

2.3.1.1 The actual value of total pyrethrin content in the materialshall be calculated to the third decimal place and then rounded OR to thesecond decimal place before applying tolerances given in 2.3.1.

2.3.L2 The average content of all samples shall not be less than thedeclared nominal content.

3. PACKING AND MARKING

3.1 Packing — The material shall be packed as per requirements givenin IS : 8190( Part I )-1980f.

3.2 Marking — The containers shall be securely closed and shall bearlegibly and indelibly the following information besides any other informationas required under the Insecticides Act and Rules:

a) Name of the material,

b) Name of the manufacturer,

c) Date of manufacture,

d) Batch number,

e) Net mass of contents,

f) Nominal total pyrethrin content m/m, and

g) The cautionary notice as worded in the Insecticides Act and Rules.

3.2.1 Each container may also be marked with the 1S1 CertificationMark.

Nom-The use of the 1S1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisionsof the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks) Act and the Rulesand Regulations made thereunder. The 1S1 Mark on products covered by anIndian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to complywith the requirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection,testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by 1S1 and operatedby the producer. 1S1 marked products are also continuously checked by 1S1 forconformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions underwhich alicence fortheuseofthe ISI Certification Mark may bygrantedtornanu-facturersor processors, maybe obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

4. SAMPLING

4.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn as prescribedin ‘Indian Standard Methods for sampling of pesticides and their formu-lations’ ( under preparation).

NOTE— Till such time the standard under preparation is published, samplesshall be drawn as agreed to between the concerned parties.

5. TESTS

5.1 Tests shall be carried out by theCO14 and 5 of Table 1.

material containing approximately 150 mg of total pyreth& and extractin a Soxhlet Extraction apparatus on a water bath with petroleum etherfor six hours or more if the extract being syphoned still shows colour. Eva-porate off the petroleum ether on a water bath till approximately 1 to 2 mlof the solvent remains in the flask.

Proceed for the identity test and determination of total pyrethrincontent as described in Appendices A and B of IS : 1051-1980*, respectively.

5.2 Quality of Reagents — Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicalsand distilled water ( see IS : 1070- 1977~ ) shall be employed in tests.

NOTE — ‘Pure chemicals’ shall mean chemicals that do not contain impuritieswhich affect the results of analysis.

‘When freshly manufactured material in bulk quantity is offered for inspection,representative sarnplcs of {he material shall be dra!vn and tested as prescribed in1S 10627: 1%3 within 90 days of its manufacture. When tbe material is offeredfor inspection after 90 days of its nlanufacturc, sanlpling shall be done asprescribed in 1S 10627 : 19S3. However, the criteria for conformity of thematerial when tested, shall be the limits of tolcra rices, as applicable over thedeclared nomi IM1value and given under clause 2.3.1 of the standard.’
