The Aging Population

• One of the major accomplishments of the 20th century is that 30 years were added to life expectancy in the United States.

• One of the biggest factors driving “the aging population” is the aging of baby boomers – the 78 million people born between 1946 and 1964.

• By 2011, the oldest boomer will reach age 65 and after that point, 10,000 boomers will turn 65 every day – the biggest and quickest aging of America in history.

caregivers amounts to due to:

Effect On Employees

• Unlike arranging child care, arranging eldercare is often reactive – not proactive.

• Coordinating eldercare services is difficult, especially for employed caregivers

Caring for an aging loved one involves many responsibilities: medical, emotional, physical, financial, and spiritual.

According to a recent survey conducted by Home Instead Senior Care®:

53% said their caregiving responsibilities were taking a toll on their professional lives

Conducted in the U.S. and Canada by Home Instead Senior Care, this study revealed that nearly one-third of adults in the U.S. have a major communication obstacle with their parents that

stems from continuation of the “parent-child role.”

The 40-70 Rule

Unfortunately, a lack of family communication can lead to problems for seniors such as misuse of medications, self-neglect—even accidents. So, the goal of the 40-70 campaign is to provide practical ways for adult children to start talking with their parents now.

The 40-70 Guide

• At the center of the 40-70 campaign is a guide of conversation starters for sensitive senior-care subjects. Here’s an example:

• Your 70-year-old widowed mother has justbeen diagnosed with macular degeneration, a disease that causes deterioration of eyesight.  How do you begin a conversation with her about the possible ramifications of this disease?
