The Incredible, Unbelievable Phone Call

Ken Gaub was struggling with God’s purpose for his life. The Gaub family was a traveling ministry, covering fifty thousand miles a year, taking their family entertainment act into churches, schools, and on the back roads of America.

Late one night, Ken had been driving for hours. He was tired. Self-pity enshrouded him. What do you want with me, Lord? he silently demanded. Couldn’t we serve you better by staying put—making a lot more money to support other ministries?

He pulled into a roadside diner so his family could eat and take a break. Ken wasn’t hungry so he decided to take a walk. He crossed through a gas station, walking past an empty phone booth. Suddenly the phone began to ring.

Ken stopped. Looked around. The phone kept ringing. He started to step away. He paused again. Maybe it’s an emergency, he thought. He stepped into the booth.

“Hello?” Ken said. “I have a person to person call for Mr. Ken Gaub,” said the operator. “What?” said Ken, instinctively looking around for the Candid

telephone operator…calling an empty phone booth…trying to trap him looking silly…by asking for him.

Less patiently, the operator asked, “Is this Ken Gaub? I have a per-son-to-person call for you,” she reiterated, with the tone of a teacher scolding a child.

“I believe that’s him,” said another voice on the phone—a woman’s voice.

“Go ahead,” said the operator dismissively. The woman on the phone was named Millie. She told Ken, “You

don’t know me…but I’m desperate…I remembered you…and a phone number came into my mind to call you. Thank you so much for taking my call.”

This was no joke, concluded Ken. No it wasn’t. It was a Godwink just for Ken—and Millie—in a phone booth…in the middle of nowhere.

“How did you get this number?” Ken asked. “I don’t know, it just came to me.” Millie replied. “Can I talk with

you?”“Of course,” said Ken. Read the rest of Ken and Millie’s amazing story on page 53 of

One of a KindThat morning at work, I sat staring at the blank page in my type-

writer. I’d been keeping myself busy with my secretarial job, tennis lessons, ski trips and the singles-group meetings at church. I had my close friends and family. But I was lonely.

I just want to feel loved, I said to God. Is that so much to ask?Lunchtime came around, and I was still struggling with my “poor

me” thoughts. Shopping will do the trick, I thought, heading for my favorite card shop across the street. For some reason the knickknacks and balloons made me feel worse. A display of brightly colored mugs stood before me. I picked one up to get a closer look.

On the side was a red heart and the words I Love You written over and over in fancy cursive—the very words I needed to hear. I’ll have my afternoon tea in it.

Feeling lighter, I went to the cashier to make my purchase. The clerk checked the mug but couldn’t find a price sticker. “I need a price check,” he called out to the store manager.

“Where did you find this?” the manager asked me.“Over there with the others.”The manager walked to the shelf full of mugs and looked for

another that said I Love You. “That seems to be the only one,” he said. “And I don’t recall ever selling that style. Take it. No charge.”

I held the mug tight to my chest. God had blessed me with a sign of His love. And He gave it freely.

Billy Graham’s Biggest Incredible Godwink

No one knows her name. She attended one of Billy Graham’s revivals in a small town somewhere in America. She was mesmerized by his unique abilities to connect with his audience and share the Gospel in such a powerful way. It was like Billy was speaking directly to her. She thought everyone should know about him and decided to do something about it.

So she called Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate, at his home. What are the chances Randolph Heart would answer his own phone? Well, he did. And in clear persuasive words, she told the world’s most powerful publisher exactly how she felt about a young preacher named Billy Graham.

One can never underestimate the power of Godwinks…nor the force of a single little grandmother.

For Billy Graham, this woman’s phone call was a momentous Godwink that helped him fulfill God’s plan and purpose for his life. And because of it, Billy Graham had the unparalleled stature of being the only advisor to every president from Harry Truman to George W. Bush.

A Precious Godwink from a Stranger

Stasia Kelly was in shock. She sat on the plane gazing at a picture of her father on the front page of the newspaper. “Emmett Kelly, World’s Most Famous Clown, Dead at 80.”

She looked at her father’s famous countenance—the sad-faced hobo, Weary Willie. That was his trademark. All the other clowns in the circus wore wide grins. But Willie’s sad face was so compelling, so endearing, it made him stand out.

Her sad-faced father carefully guarded his trademark face. He never allowed himself to be caught smiling in a photograph. Except for one time. On that day, Emmett was doing an interview with a UPI photographer. The phone rang. It was his wife Evi’s doctor.

“Congratulations! You’re the father of a baby daughter,” said the doctor. Involuntarily Emmett’s face burst into a huge smile—from ear to ear.

Click. That picture of the sad-faced clown smiling, the photogra-pher’s best shot ever—a Godwink itself—went around the world to newspapers everywhere. Emmett was overjoyed every time he told the story.

Turning from the airplane window, Stasia looked down at the newspaper picture of her father. It was the one and only one that caught him smiling. She suddenly realized that big smile was for her. Quietly, Stasia began to cry.

A man seated next to her, leaned over. He asked if she was all right. “Yes,” she whispered. “My father died this morning,” pointing to

the picture in her lap. The man’s face turned ashen. “You’re not going to believe this!” he

stammered. Stasia looked at him, puzzled.Find out what this stranger said to Stasia that brought her

When a winter storm hit, Edna had no means to clean up the devastation.

Until the Angels with chainsaws arrived!

Eighty-eight-year old Edna stood alone looking into the darkness. Outside, the wind of a winter storm was ravaging her North Caro-lina farmhouse without mercy. With the power already out and the night just beginning, she listened to the storm unleash its fury and began to pray softly. “O, God, protect me from this storm.”

When the lonely hours of night finally faded into morning, Edna rose from her chair and stepped to the window. The destruction was devastating. Large, splintered branches lay stacked upon one another, frozen in the grip of ice. Drifts of snow climbed the side of the house. Power lines had blown to the ground and were tan-gled in the mess of debris.

“Where will I ever find the money to clean up this mess?” she whispered to herself. She was already struggling making ends meet on her Social Security check. She had no one to call for help. Thir-ty-six hours passed. The power was still off and Edna was running out of firewood. The yard remained a disaster. Lying down by the

fire, she suddenly heard several engines roar around the corner and into her driveway. Car doors opened and slammed shut.

She was surprised to see ten men unloading tools in her front yard. One of the men stepped up onto the porch and knocked. Cau-tiously, she opened the door.

“Ma’am,” the gentleman said, smiling, “my name is Joel. We live nearly a hundred miles away in South Carolina. We heard about the terrible ice storm you had up here, so several men from our church got together and decided to come up and help out. We brought our tools to clean up your yard.”

Edna was stunned. “But I have no money to pay you,” she stammered.

“Ma’am,” Joel kindly interrupted her, “we don’t expect nor will we take any money for our labor. Our pastor received a call that you and several others in this area were in desperate need of assistance, and we’ve come as Christian brothers so we can help.”

Edna watched from her window as the angels with chainsaws cut down the large, damaged trees and sawed the limbs into manageable lengths. Despite the bitter cold, they worked all day to clear the yard, replenish her stack of firewood, and rake the empty flower beds.

When the job was done and their tools were loaded up, Joel again knocked on the door. “Ma’am, may we come in for a moment?”

“Of course, come in,” Edna insisted. Gently, all ten men filed into her small living room. Joel handed her a New Testament complete with their signatures on the inside front cover.

“This is a gift from us. If it is ok, we would like to pray for you.”

Circling together, they held hands and prayed for God to protect Edna, comfort her, and bless her with a long, healthy life.

When they left, Edna looked at her yard and marveled—it looked better than before the storm.

“Thank you, God. I was bitter at this storm, yet you blessed me. Thank you for those men and their obedience. Bless them, Lord, and help me do likewise.”
