1.2. SafetyVietnam is an incredibly safe country. For a city as large as Ho Chi Minh City, the crime rate is verylow, especially violent crime. Petty crime can be an issue here but if you walk about the streetssmartly and don’t act flashy, you are likely not to have a problem. The freestanding homes andbungalows usually have a security booth and many of the occupants hire a private securityservice. These homes that are independent of compounds tend to have a really high wall as wellto deter thieves. That being said, homes, both in and out of compounds, can get broken into soany precautions you would take in your home country most likely also apply here.

1.3. Culture

ATTRACTION Introduction

Ao dai – Traditional Clothes

The beauty of women dressed in “Ao Dai”always leaves adeep impression on foreign visitors to Vietnam. Girlstudents dressed in white long robes take to streets on theway to schools or back home, or gracefully sail on theirbikes along streets. Female secretaries in delicate pastelsgreet you at an office door and older ladies in deep shadesof purple, green or blue cut a striking pose at a restaurantdinner. The “Ao Dai” appears to flatter every figure.

Quan ho Bac Ninh – Singing Custom

In the provinces of Bắc Ninh and Bắc Giang in northern VietNam, many of the villages are twinned, reinforcing theirrelationship through social customs such as Quan họ folksongs. The songs are performed as alternating versesbetween two women from one village who sing inharmony, and two men from another village who respondwith similar melodies, but with different lyrics. The womentraditionally wear distinctive large round hats and scarves;the men’s costumes include turbans, umbrellas and tunics.Quan họ singing is common at rituals, festivals, competitions and informal gatherings. Quan họ songsexpress the spirit, philosophy and local identity of thecommunities in this region, and help forge social bondswithin and between villages that share a cherished culturalpractice.
