ISAF Olympic Commission

• Established: The ISAF Olympic Commission was established in February 2009 and is lead by YA CEO Phil Jones

• Key Aim: The key aim of commission is to strengthen the sport of sailing in the Olympic Games

• ISAF Income: Important to highlight that the IOC provides ISAF with 65% of its income – the commission estimate this to be worth well over 100m annually

• Current situation – while sailing has historically had good links into the IOC, and will be making its 26th appearance in the Olympic Program for 2012 – a newly introduced Olympic Sport selection criteria by the IOC has highlighted some significant issues that need to be addressed to ensure its position in the Games moving forward

• Governed by the International Sailing Federation

• Competitive platform for both the world’s best Olympic Sailors & the wider sailing community

• Consists of 10 Olympic Class Events

• Sail Melbourne the first leg of the international series and the only leg in the Asia Pacific Rim

• Victorian Government secured event for Melbourne until 2011

Key Issues

The key issues identified were that sailing;

• Had a high number of athletes and events in comparison to its broadcast revenues and spectator appeal

• It’s cost and complexity of the operation of the sailing competition presents challenges for the development of the sport; and

• That from a global prospective sailing was strong in Europe but significantly weaker in emerging areas such as Asia and Africa.

Value to the Olympic Program

• The Olympic Brand - The IOC Packages a number of sports together to ‘sell’ to the global market. Collectively and the brand of the Olympic Games, IOC generates considerable sponsorship and rights revenue

• Olympic revenues - The greater the audience interest, the more valuable the rights to the various sports that the IOC is selling and the greater the revenue that can be generated

• Broadcast rights - Over 50% of the IOC income is generated from broadcast rights. The IOC Program commission therefore talks in terms of ‘.. The value that each sport adds to the Olympic Program.

• ISAF Income - It is from these rights ISAF receives 65% of its income

• Direct Impact -Sailing’s presence in the Olympics also directly impacts MNA’s and sailors through Government and NOC Funding in addition to significant levels sponsorship

• The Industry - Indirectly positively impacts the sailing industry
