Inventors & Innovators at SIU: Through the Years

SIU’s Office of Economic and Regional Development hosted a business after-hours exhibit

and reception on Thursday, April 6 at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center

from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, in conjunction with SIU’s Da Vinci Days celebration of innovation

and creativity in the sciences, humanities and arts. SIU has been a leader in research, discovery

and innovation, resulting in nearly 100 patents for faculty and staff since 1960. One of the

patents came from Mr. Martin Hebel, IST/EST Associate Professor. Mr. Hebel received a

U.S. patent award on September in 2016:

O’Shaughnessy, S. A., Hebel, M.A., et al. (September 2016). U.S. Patent for Multi-

Band Photodiode Sensor, Serial Number 13/785,500.

The CASA ceremony at the TEC started at 3:30 PM on Saturday, April 8, 2017. ISAT honored 49

full- or part-time undergraduate students who have

1. attained an undergraduate grade point average at SIU of 3.50 or better and, if applicable, a 3.50

average or better in all undergraduate work (including transfer credit) recognized by SIU; and

2. reached the benchmarks of 12, 45, 75, or 105 SIU credit hours of coursework since the prior

year's qualification determination.

Thirteen students attend the ceremony with their parents, spouse, and friends. Mr. Jim Sissom,

Five senior Information Systems Technologies (IST) students comprise the SIU Student Web

Development Team (Advisor: Dr. Andrey Soares, Dr. Nancy Martin, and Ms. Belle

Woodward, IST Associate Professors) during the 2016-2017 school year. They received third

place at the Association for Information Technology Professionals’ (AITP ) National Collegiate

Conference and Career Fair (NCC) competition held April 6-8, 2017. The team members include

team leader Lee Cooper, Ren Jing, Hallie Martin, Matt Gross, and Cody Lingle.

This year’s project was a fully functioning web site for the Ascend RSO in the College of

Business on the campus of SIUC. The project began in September 2016, with deliverables

throughout the fall and spring semesters. The project culminated with a formal presentation

judged at the AITP NCC in St. Louis in April. Students were judged on a variety of criteria, but

primarily their development process. This year’s team is following the agile Scrum approach to

manage the project. The team placed third at 2017 AITP NCC.

2017 McNair Scholars Welcome Ceremony

Mr. Xavier Aguirre, IST student, was selected for 2017 McNair Scholar. During this summer,

Mr. Aguirre will conduct his undergraduate research under the supervision of Ms. Belle

Woodward, IST Associate Professor. Ms. Woodward is leading a research group called

“Privacy and Security in the Digital Age.” The scholar program will support a summer stipend

for the scholars.

With support from the Dean’s office, the CASA Research Committee will host a new

College-wide event to help promote the ongoing research and collaboration among CASA

faculty. The CASA Faculty Research Flash Talks with the Community will be held on the

evening of Friday, April 28 at the Carbondale Community Arts Center. The goal is for this

event to serve as a catalyst for collaboration both in and out of the College.

Each faculty member interested in participating will be given five minutes to briefly

introduce their current, concluding, or proposed research to a crowd consisting of CASA

faculty and staff and invited community members from both the University and the larger

regional area. ISAT will have three presentations at the CASA Faculty Research Flash

Talks.

Cybersecurity Day in Fall 2017

The Information Systems Technologies (IST, Program

Coordinator: Mr. Tom Imboden) degree program of the School

of Information Systems and Applied Technologies (ISAT, Director:

Dr. Sam Chung) and the Security Dawgs Registered Student

Organizations (RSO) will invite local high school, community

college, and college students to increase attention on the need for

cybersecurity. The IST degree program offers an elite Information

Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) degree program with

emphases on the following areas:

IT: Cybersecurity, Network & System Administration, & Internet of Things (IoT)

IT/IS: Web & Mobile App Development and IT/IS Management

IS: Data Management & Applied Data Analytics (ADA)

Lunch will be provided and we are hoping to again have t-shirts and some fun door prizes too.

ISAT Director, Dr. Sam Chung, visited Kaskaskia College (KC) in Centralia, IL to attend

the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Advisory Board Meeting on Wednesday, April

19, 2017. Dr. Chung met Ms. Angenien Huffstutler, CIT Instructor, and her students. He

introduced IST program to the students and the board members.

Carbondale Community High School (CCHS) Computer Club (CC) Wotan 2 Cluster

Computer Project o When: Friday, April 21, 28, May 5, and 12 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

o Where: ASA 208

The goal of this project is to build a cluster computer to be used in the training of recurrent

neural networks (RNN). Many aspects of RNN training are subject to parallelization, and as

such a robust and efficient system will be implemented with the cluster. The team of CCHS

CC (Mr. Michael Dollins, Computer Club Sponsor and Mr. Carson Wang, Computer Club

President) started their project on Friday, April 21, 2017 with seven students. Mr. Hong

Jung, Dr. Sam Chung’s Smart and Secure Computing Research Group member, is helping

the CCHS CC students.

CCHS CC students started their Wotan 2 Cluster Computer Project in ASA 208.

A student cybersecurity club at JALC Center for Information Assurance, Logan Defenders

(President: Karandeep Bedi) invited Dr. Sam Chung, ISAT School Director, to their club

meeting on April 25, 2017. Two advisors of the club, Mr. Mark Rogers, Assistant Professor,

and Ms. Kylee Williams, Instructor of Computer Information Systems (CIS), attended Dr.

Chung’s presentation titled “Your Promising Future with Advanced BS Degrees at SIU ISAT”

with 15 students.
