Microsok  Augmented  Reality  Concept  Fuses  Virtual  World  with  Reality  

•  Microsok  researchers  have  created  a  new  augmented  reality  concept  by  improving  how  virtual  simulaNons  react  in  the  physical  world.  

•  The  Kinect  sensor  is  used  in  a  process  called  Kinect  Fusion,  which  allows  projecNons  of  objects  to  react  to  different  surfaces.  Kinect  Fusion  is  possible  with  the  Beamatron  —  a  device  consisNng  of  the  Kinect  sensor  and  a  projector.  It’s  aCached  to  a  spinning  head  in  the  ceiling  and  allows  it  to  take  detailed  maps  of  physical  spaces.  

•  This  technology  projects  objects  anywhere  in  a  room  and  allows  realisNc  movement.  It  bumps  into  objects  such  as  table,  chairs  and  walls.  Plus,  the  simulaNon  is  never  distorted  when  crossing  over  bumpy  surfaces.  

•  It’s  now  possible  for  virtual  objects  to  interact  within  physical  spaces  like  never  before.  The  projector  can  sense  what  is  going  on  in  the  room  and  shows  changes  in  seconds.  

•  In  a  video,  Andy  Wilson,  Microsok  principal  researcher  drives  a  3D  image  of  a  toy  car  around  a  room  with  a  remote  control.  It  bumps  into  walls  and  drives  over  hills.

•  Researchers  at  Cambridge  build  LEGO  robots  that  automate  Nme-­‐consuming  laboratory  processes  at  a  fracNon  of  the  cost  of  a  "real"  robot.  

•  We've  talked  here  before  about  the  extremely  important  (and  oken-­‐overlooked)  DIY  aspect  of  science.  ScienNsts  are  makers.  They  have  to  be.  The  tools  they  need  oken  aren't  available  any  other  way.  Other  Nmes,  the  tools  are  available,  but  they're  far  more  expensive  than  what  you  could  construct  out  of  your  own  ingenuity.

•  Boise  State  U  Replaces  Cadaver  Lab  With  Virtual  Anatomy  Tool  –  Students  at  Boise  State  University  (BSU)  are  using  virtual  cadavers  to  study  human  anatomy.  According  to  a  statement  released  Monday  to  the  press,  the  university  recently  closed  its  human  cadaver  lab  to  adoptAnatomyTV,  a  Web-­‐based  soluNon  from  Primal  Pictures.
