PATROL SEES 34 AUTODEATHS FOR NEW YEARS
"Be a friend first and then agood host," reminded the FloridaHighway Patrol today as theypredicted that 34 persons willdie in traffic accidents duringthe New Year's Holiday period.
Patrol Director Reid Cliftonsaid, "As usual, alcohol willprobably contribute to many ofthe 34 traffic deaths we are pre-dicting. If you plan a party, be afriend first and then a good host.Don't let guests leave your hometo drive to their death becauseyou felt you had to be a good host."
Clifton urged hosts to havenon-alcoholic beverages on handfor drivers or help make a r -rangements for transportationfor those who might have too muchto drink.
The New Year's Holiday per-iod begins at 6:00 p.m., Wednes-day, Dec. 31 and ends at mid-night Sunday, Jan. 3. If the Pat-rol's prediction is correct, oneperson will die every 3 hoursduring the long 102-hour holidayperiod.
To help curb the expectedhighway deaths Clifton said thatall available troopers and aux-iliary men will be assigned totraffic duty and will be workingwith aircraft, radar, VASCARand unmarked Patrol cars dur-ing the entire holiday period.
IF YOU DRINK DON'T DRIVE,AND IF YOU DRIVE DON'TDRINK. WE LIKE YOU AROUNDAWHILE!

Letter To The EditorTo The Islander:
Your editorial in the Dec. 18Islander concerning the high risequestion was very "ify" and quitemisleading. If there were a goodplan for approaching our zoningproblems through density alone,we would have small cause forconcern. Unfortunately, we mustcope with the original "conceptplan" done by Adley Associatesfor the Lee County Commission-ers. To me, it is so ill-conceivedI am convinced that if a firm rep-resentative visited the islands atall, he must have been blindfold-ed! Among the more obviousgoofs, is a super highway throughDing Darling Sanctuary and des-tination of one end of Sanibel andall of Captiva, except for TurnerBeach, as a highly concentratedurban area! We are suppose tostand still for that? As for yourhypothetical 100 acres, I can't
imagine a developer agreeing toput nothing on his land while hisneighbor builds a 15 story apartr-ment building. Instead of strayinginto the "if only...", let's stickto the hard, cold facts: unless theCommissioners decide in ourfavor on Feb. 10, hfgh rises canbe built anywhere on either islandthat is not now zoned for duplexesor single family residences. Assoon as the first one goes up, thelid is off and Sanibel and Captivaas all the world knows them, aredoomed.
We wish we had time to con-sider any and all alternatives. We don't. At this moment, certaindevelopers are literally standingby with equipment ready to startbuilding high rises as soon as themoratorium is lifed. We have afiner in the dike, just that. Ourstand was carefully consideredbefore it was taken, ouiLplanning

commjttee is not lacking in pro-fessional qualifications, and wehave tried to make it represent-ative. Among our members is awell-qualified engineer, an ex-pert on pollution, the propertymanager of a large development,a real estate broker, a formerzoning board member, a restaur-ant owner-manager, a motel own-er-manager, officers from boththe Conservation Foundation andthe Audubon Society and residentfamily members whose real es-tate holdings are extensive. Allare residents giving freely oftheir time and talents becauseof deep conviction that an ordin-ance restricting the heights ofbuildings, here on Sanibel andCaptiva, only is absolutely es-sential for the good of the com-munity. We have neither the de-sire nor intention of dictating tothe rest of Lee County. Perhaps, given the time and availablefunds, we can hire a competentprofessional planner who wouldgive esthetic values the prioritythey deserve but that is in thefuture. We must deal with the heresmd now. The islands, the county, the state, the nation cannot affordto put high rises here. The costis too tragically high,

THE ISLAND GARDENER
Have you noticed a ratherobnoxious smell in your yard?If you have, the Florida Nursery-men and Growers Association(FNGA) says there's a good pos-sibility that one of the mushroomscalled the stinkhorn is hidingamong your shrubs or ornament-als. There are two distinct typesof stinkhorns in Florida. The onethat is most commonly foundlooks generally like an orangebasket, except that the top of thebasket is closed. The odor isalmost unbearable from this one.The other type has a long whitestem much like a common mush-room but with a grayish-brownhead or top resembling a sponge.Neither one of these stinkhornscan be controlled effectively, al-though some oldtimers say thatlime applied to the lawn will help. But the modern-day pathologistwould rather see you use a com-bination fungicide such as te r -rachlor plus captan. In eithercase, control is most difficult andprobably not worth the expensenor the effort. The mushroomslast for a relatively short time, emitting their odor to attractinsects that scatter the spores orseeds to other areas.
Frost may have d a m a g e dsome of your tender plants suchas crotons, hibiscus, or poinset-tias. What do you do now if thisis the case? As the football play-er jokingly says, "You punt!"But that's a little hard to do witha plant, so to take another attack,if you can stand the unsightlyappearance, leave the old foliageon the stems. This will protectthe plant from further cold dam-age. Pruning only exposes barebranches and open ends to morecold. Not only this, but you mayneed to prune again when you cantell the fullest extent of the dam-age.
Watering of injured plants ismost important. The air of thecold weather is lacking in mois-ture and has a tendency to with-draw moisture from plants. Ifthere is no moisture supplied bythe root system, then the topswill be easily damaged.
Several types of scale are onour plants during the w i n t e rmonths, according to the1 FNGA.This scale can be easily over-looked, particularly on citrus, gardenias, hibiscus and others. The only telltale effects of thescale may be a black sooty cov-ering of the leaves. Should thissymptom occur, you should spraythe affected plant with malathion.Use malathion on citrus trees thathave fruit on them, but be sureto wait the specified amount oftime for the deterioration of theinsecticide before eating t h efruit. Usually this is 7 to 10days or later. Do not use a spraythat contains oil since oil mustbe applied only when the tem-perature is between 45 and 80.A plant sprayed with oil at thistime of year would undoubtedlylose all of its leaves.
