But, that doesn't stopBeverly from making her finalmission, a huge success.

"I am going around and getall the auction prizes just like

I did in 2004," Beverly said. Her efforts garnered thousandsof dollars for the fundraiser.

"I am going to do thatagain," she said.

The Twentieth Annual St.Patrick's Day Pub Crawl began

its 2006 journey with a bakesale at the Elk's Lodge March4.

The Pub Crawl will start atBobby D's with a brunch of tra-ditional corned beef and cab-bage, potatoes, and specially

Some items moved forward, some moved backward and somestood still at the March 8 SantaRosa Island Authority Commit-tee meetings.

A discussion on hotel roomsize and amenities came up onceagain as Beachside Resortssought approval for final con-struction plans from the Archi-tectural and Environmental Re-view Committee. Previously, theSRIA had recommended lower-ing the square foot area of hotelrooms and to scale down any ad-ditional amenities such as micro-waves and refrigerators. TheBeachside project calls for a"planned unit development;" anineteen story building contain-ing 190 hotel rooms and 16 resi-dential units. The first floorwould provide parking alongwith an outdoor paved lot total-ing 390 spaces.

Vernon Prather questionedapproval of the project before theSRIA had some way of assessingparking impact in the core areaand assessing impact fees basedon that information.

"I have a problem withtwenty units which are over 1900square feet," Bill Griffith said."Something doesn't seem quiteright. I hope this doesn't end upbeing a condo complex eventu-ally."

Staff reported that BeachsideResorts had met conceptual ap-proval requirements which wereapproved last September. A mo-tion was then made to accept theproposal and to move it along tothe Full Board April meeting.

But, Chairman Thom Blas

Repair and constructionprojects continue to dominate themeetings of the Santa Rosa Is-land Authority. The March 1 fullboard meeting was no exceptionwhen the Board approved pur-chase orders of $425,924 to re-pair the roads south of Via deLuna and $180, 897 for roads onthe north side of Via de Luna.Residents will be happy to knowthat the bumps and breaks in theroads off the main drag will beeliminated.

The Board approved the re-quest of Bill Griffith, vice chair-man, to have a resolution draftedto thank the Krewe of Wrecks fortheir efforts in presenting theKrewe of Wrecks parade.

"They did a superb job offundraising," Bill said. "This isthe first year the Authority couldnot fund the parade, and theypulled it all together. Thank youfor a great effort."

Thom Blas, chairman, agreed that is showed great team-work to raise the funds for theparade. He also commended theBeach Maintenance Departmentfor cleaning up the island afterthe parade.

"By ten a.m. on Monday thestreets looked really good," Blassaid.

The consent agenda was ap-proved by the Board. The Mini-mum Lease Fee Policy and Con-sideration Fee Policy are held for

SRIA Approves Construction and Repair Projectsdiscussion at the March 8 boardmeeting.

A request for an extension oftime to repair the Fishing Pierwas also moved into committee.Pier attorney, Chris Cadenhead, told the Board it would be un-wise to begin construction dur-ing the summer months becauseof dangers to individuals usingthe Pier, danger of constructionnear the public beach, and diffi-culty of removing large equip-ment in case of a hurricanethreat.

Buck Lee, SRIA GeneralManager, had a request all hisown. He asked the Board to ap-prove his intention to send a reso-lution to the Florida Congres-sional Delegation, asking for theimmediate repair of the road toFort Pickens and the road toNavarre.

"Tourism is affected by thelack of access to Ft. Pickens,"Buck said. "And we really needthe additional route off the islandthat Highway 399 provides. It isa matter of public safety."

Two SRIA trucks which "justbarely run" may be replaced bytwo former yellow safety trucksprovided by Pete MooreChevrolet. The company has of-fered to take the two old trucksin trade and offered the yellowtrucks at a reasonable price.

"We have the monies in thebudget to buy these trucks," Bob

West, SRIA Safety Director said."We have donations from groupslike the Santa Rosa Triathlonwhich we do appreciate."

Sandy Johnston, ExecutiveDirector of the Pensacola BeachChamber of Commerce, stated inher report that the Mardi Grashas been very good for the Beach.

"We have some very happyand tired merchants here," shesaid. "And, residents have com-mented on how great the paradewas."

The board approved the con-tract for the general manager foranother year. Buck Lee, whostarted working with the SRIA inMay of 2005, will receive a fivepercent pay increase.

SRIA full board meetingsare the second Wednesday of ev-ery month at 5 p.m. at the Au-thority office. The meetings areopen to the public.

SRIA Items Go Forward, Backward and Stand Stillsaid, "I am concerned that we asa Board are showing some con-cerns. I do not think this requestwill meet with favorable actionuntil the Board has more infor-mation. I would like to move thatthis request stay in committee."

The motion passed, so theBeachside project, which hadbeen approved minutes earlier togo to the Full Board, fell backinto committee.

The Administrative Com-mittee voted to send the muchdiscussed Minimum Lease FeePolicy and Consideration FeePolicy to the Full Board.

The definition of a hotelmotel also came before the Ad-ministrative Committee. Speak-ers representing hotels onPensacola Beach objected to themore stringent proposals theSRIA recommended on room sizeand amenities.

Speaking of the regulationsnow in place, Baker Clark, ownerof Five Flags Motel said, "I stud-ied every county in this State andthere is one which has an ordi-nance on size and length of stay,Escambia. We need to get in stepwith the rest of the state."

Committee members votedunanimously against changingthe current ordinance to a morerestrictive regulation, so the Ho-tel Motel definitions remain thesame, governed by the old countyordinance.

Another item which hasbeen discussed at length by theBoard is the parking of Recre-ational Vehicles on the Island. The Administrative Committeevoted to adopt a recommendation

from staff which would allowparking of RVs and other largevehicles only during specialevents. The number and place-ment would be governed by theEvents Approval Checklist. Thisitem goes to the Full Board.

A request from Circle K onVia de Luna to terminate theirlease was delayed until SRIA at-torneys have time to draft thepaperwork on the lease termina-tion, pending an environmentalreport on the condition of the site.

The store formerly sold gasoline. Two new shops, The Fancy

Flamingo and a retail sales shopwere granted approval for leaseson Quietwater Beach Boardwalk.

A final item of interest is thechange to hold committee meet-ings on the first Wednesday of themonth and Full Board meetingsthe second Wednesday of themonth.

Island Authority meetingsare held in the SRIA offices at 5p.m. and are open to the public.

Spectators packed the paraderoute as Chamber exec SandyJohnston provides a cool ride forGrand Marshall Lee Gunn duringthe Krewe of Wrecks parade.

John Patrick (Paddy) Blakewas one of the most giftedIrishmen I have ever known.Gift of gab. Gift of generosity.Gift of humor. Gift of loyalty.Gift of devotion. Gift of spirit.Gift of love. In fact, it wasPaddy's unquenchable love forhumanity which fuelled hisjourney to find the pot of goldwhich could be turned over togood causes.

Twenty years ago on St.Patrick's Day, a bunch of rowdyIrish folks boarded a small bus,and traveled from pub to pubon Pensacola Beach, with onegoal in mind. They just wantedto see how many cold beersthey could down in honor of St.Patrick.

A couple of years later,Paddy jumped on the bus andsent it on a detour. Paddy neverstopped the fun loving Irishfrom crawling from pub to pub,but he did change a few of theirhabits once they arrived at eachbistro.

All by himself, Paddytamed the wild and crazy pubcrawlers and turned the annualevent into a wild and crazyfundraiser. He developed aworkable plan. He went to lo-cal pub owners, offered to putthem on the pub crawl list, place their names on a t-shirt,if they, in turn, would help fi-nance the purchase of theshirts. Business owners jumpedon that. Paddy sold the shirts

and the first profits began tocome in. During those earlyyears, the Society of Lepre-chauns donated their proceedsto the Pensacola Beach El-ementary School, the amountoften reaching as much as$1000.

Over time Paddy developeda group of faithful followers. Irishmen and women of all nationali-ties from Pensacola Beach andsurrounding towns. They formedthe Society of Leprechauns.Guided by Paddy's wife, Shirley, the Leprechauns soon assumedtheir volunteer positions. Dressedin green from head to toe, theysold Irish memorabilia like t-shirts, green garters, and flowers. They went to every single pub onthe crawl where they helped Paddyconduct auctions of merchandise, donated by beach businesses. Allof a sudden, a bunch of Irishpeople who used to be just rev-elers, became revelers and phi-lanthropists. By now, the St.Patrick's Day Pub Crawl onPensacola Beach took on whatcould be called a dignified aura. The Leprechauns held a bakesale. They crowned their queenin ceremonies at Bobby D'sBeach Bar. The Irish had madetheir mark.

But, just remember, this isno stick-in-the-mud, dried upwalking experience. This is highoctane celebrating which rivalsMardi Gras. Anyone who hasever danced around the Island

with the Leprechauns can, andwill attest to this.

In recent years, the St.Patrick's Day Pub Crawl pro-ceeds have been donated to Cov-enant Hospice of Pensacola. Theylook forward gratefully to thecheck which usually now runsaround $8000 per year.

Sadly, Paddy Blake, the be-loved Saint of Pensacola Beach, passed away unexpectedly in Julyof 2004. But, thanks to Shirley, his son Danny and all the Lepre-chauns Paddy's Pub Crawl con-tinues to brighten the Island onSt. Patrick's Day. And it alsobrightens the hearts of the Cov-

enant Hospice staff. When thecheck is presented now, usuallyby Shirley, you can almost see animage of Paddy, standing in thebackground, flashing that infec-tious smile. It's as if he is say-ing, "O.K. you crazy bunch ofblarneyers. You did pretty good."

I won't be there forMardi Gras. I know the Beach willparty on without me. I'll be therein 2007. My thoughts will be withthe Beach people, now and forever.

The Most Wine-Challenged Food

There are some foods that simply do nottaste good with wine. Heading this list isasparagus, a member of the lily familythat contains the sulfurous amino acidmethionine. This compound, in combi-nation with the vegetable’s grassy fla-vor, can render wines quite unpleasant. The wine that challenges asparagusmost is chardonnay. Your best chanceof serving asparagus with a white winerests with steaming or microwaving theasparagus until almost done, then grill-ing it and serving it with sauvignon blancor pinot grigio. The grilling process takesthe bitter edge off the greenness of theasparagus. Then, you can create a har-monious balance by serving it with a winethat also has light green flavors.

HINT: Other good wines to serve withgrilled asparagus include riesling, beaujolais, dolcetto, and white zinfandel.

Matching a wine with certain foods canbe a trying experience. You can trust theknowledge of the folks at BEACHWINES & LIQUORS, INC. We knowwine. I can't believe it's already timefor the St. Patrick's Day festivities- when the air is filled with thescent of corned beef and cabbagecooking, leprechauns begin pop-ping up here and there and, hope-fully, someone will find a four-leafclover! (It won't be me. And ifI'm that close to the ground, pleasehelp me up.) Of course, it's im-possible to even think about thePub crawl without rememberingthe beach Irishman who started itall here on the Island, our very ownbeloved and unforgettable PaddyBlake! (Yes, Richard Dancer, Iknow you were involved also.)And we all know they had lots ofhelp. You may be surprised to findthat my recipe today came fromPaddy, but we'll get to that later.

First, I have to tell you thatPaddy and Shirley have been myfriends for over 20 years. Paddyloved to tell everyone that I wasthe only female that could call hishouse and ask Shirley if he couldcome out and play. It was true. And, if Paddy was there first, thenat some point we'd call Shirley tocome and play.

His worst mistake was leav-ing Shirley and me in Bobby D'sone Sunday. We'd been drinkingshooters and were having a won-derful time when we finally no-ticed he was gone. Now, Shirleywas a little "ticked off" that he leftwithout saying anything, so shedecided to teach him a small les-son (okay, I helped). We orderedthe rest of our drinks and shooterson Paddy's bar tab. The next daywhen he came into the bar, he wastold he had a $30 bar tab. Paddysaid, "But I don't have a bar tabhere!" The bartender said, "Youdo now."

So his first beer that day was

very costly and he never left usalone in the bar again. He sworethat he told us he was leaving.Maybe we missed it. Shirley's alot of fun even without alcohol!

Here's some drinking trivia Icame across in an article some-where: Did you know thatGuiness stout has more heart-healthy flavonoids and triggersmore anti-clotting activity thanlight colored beer? I sure didn't.And beer hops contain a type offlavonoid that may help ward offsome cancers. Hops may also fighthot flashes and osteoporosis. Iguess that means that more "ma-ture" ladies need to start guzzlingdown the beer. They did say thatyou would have to drink a wholekeg to get enough to make a dif-ference. They said that was notrecommended, but they didn't sayit was impossible. I don't thinkthat's much of a problem aroundhere.

Please participate in the PubCrawl - it's for a good cause andyou'll have tremendous fun! Thisone's for you, Paddy. You are cel-ebrated, loved and missed. I hopeyou will all join me in raising atoast to Paddy and all the Irish menand women.

TIME FOR ANEW COLOR?

Let’sDo It!

WALK INSWELCOME

Stop in today!

Pink. Juicy. Nude. Sheer.Don't be scared, these are all thebuzzwords on the Spring Liptrends! The overly-lined twotoned look is over and has beenfor quite sometime! Here aresome hints to get out of the win-ter rut and change things up abit.

Lips are going very light thisyear. A lot of natural or nude col-ors of lipstick, or just use yourfavorite lip liner and gloss rightover it. That way you have a nicegloss with a little color. It’s prettylong-lasting. If you want a re-ally natural look, but aren’t surewhat shade to choose, try and getone closest to the inside of yourlower lip. This also helps with

which tone to use, too. For a nighttime look shiny

gloss in deep hues of blue-red,plum, bronzes, and bright crim-son are matched with a pale eyecolor, heavy liquid eyeliner andextra long eyelashes, (think 40sand 50s glamour pin-up girls).Try a fleck of gold shimmereyeshadow right in the center ofyour bottom lip for the Angelinapout and swept across your eye-lids for an added sparkle. Flickwhatever is left on your brush onyour cleavage for some glimmerthere. You never know when thelight will hit you in such a waythat you might need a bit of shinein this area.

Here’s to a beautiful you!

March 17 has always beenvery lucky for me even though Icarry no Irish genes (unless youcount the jeans I wore toMcGuire's in the 1980s). Thereis no Seamus O'Shaughnessy orMaggie O'Toole in any of myfamily's lineage. Yet the luck ofthe Irish has always been by myside particularly during some ofthe most memorable times in mylife.

It was 17 years ago atMcGuire's Prediction Run, whilesitting on the curb awaiting ourresults and sweating out one toomany Irish drinks from thePensacola Beach St. Patrick'sDay Pub Crawl held the nightbefore, that my boyfriend pro-fessed his undying love for me. I

guess it wasn't the 10K run fol-lowed by a few green beers thatwere talking as Harry made goodon his promise and today I referto him as my husband.

Some years later on March17, we adopted our dog fromFOCAS, an animal rights groupin San Diego, California. Charlieis still hanging tough for being15-years-old and partially blind. He has defended his turf in fourdifferent states, seven houses andwith a determined spirit in spiteof five cross country militarymoves.

It was also nine years ago onMarch 17 that I found out I waspregnant. As I imagined how mybelly would arch much like a per-fect rainbow, I realized that there

would be no pot of gold at oneend, but something much morevaluable when then time came -our son. Thank goodness it wasnot a leprechaun as some hadpredicted.

So as Harry (my husband),Harry (our son), Charlie (thedog) and I went on a four-leafclover hike last weekend, I wasn'ttoo upset when we came upempty handed. In fact, I don'tthink I have ever found a four-leaf clover; but somewhere in mylife I have found faith, hope, andlove. As for luck, my husbandalways says that is something youmake yourself - no leaf needed. And that from a man who has along list of Irish names in his lin-eage.

Until next time, Happy St.Patrick's Day.

Okay, it's time for me to saythis! For the last few months, allI hear and see on network andcable TV is coverage of the af-termath of Katrina. There's foot-age of New Orleans and updatesdaily on progress or lack of.

It's like the only hurricanethat anyone talks about. Heyfolks, what about those otherstorms that ravaged the entireGulf Coast? You know, a littlestorm named Ivan - or Dennis.

Oh...how soon America for-gets. Here on Pensacola Beach,it's still an uphill climb. Con-struction is everywhere. Roadsare being rebuilt. Trash is stillabundant and life is not back tonormal..

Hey, I know that Katrina wasa terrible storm and my heartgoes out to all, but what aboutus? Are we not good news any-more? We were hit by two hurri-canes, three tropical storms - allin a one year span of time.

New Orleans was not hit di-rectly by Katrina. What aboutWaveland and Gulfport? Theytook a direct hit.

But news sells and New Or-leans is news.

We should never forget any-one that has been hit by these hor-rible storms. In no way am I dis-counting what happened to our

How soon we forget......friends in New Orleans who havehad a hard time and my prayersstill go out to them, but I live hereand see this everyday. Not just onthe beach, but all over our area.

When you read the papers, they say that everything is backto normal out here on the beach. What? Normal is a strange wayto put it!

Just drive past the Core Areaand tell me if that looks normalto you. Trailers. Debris fields andgood people still waiting for theirinsurance companies to pay off.No sea oats. No greenery. Nosand dunes, and the surfbreakswell, that’s a whole new subject.

Sure, the bars are open andyou can eat and party as much asyou want, but tell that to a fam-ily who still lives in town or in aFEMA Trailer. Are they ready forSummer 2006?

Thanks for letting me rant.Sometimes it might help.

Stay Stoked.

What is the dilemma? You have the right tackle,

the right rod and reel, a boatwhich doesn't sink, the rightwind conditions, and the rightwater temperature! So, why am Inot catching any fish? It's be-cause I'm at home doing the whatnots around the house that Ididn't do the last few weekends Iwas fishing. Once again, I amplaying catch up because I wantto do my part. Sound familiar?Ithappens all too often here.

Here's an idea for the dayyou are not on the water. Getready and with all your fishingequipment in the vehicle, whether by boat or land, head toone of the many local fish mar-kets in town. If it makes you feelbetter, pull the boat behind youwhen you go. When you getthere, waiting is all too familiarbecause the selection is too hardto choose from. After you bagyour selection, you will feel par-tially satisfied, because for once, coming home empty handed isnot an option. You will have hadthe chance to smell and see alldifferent types of fish while sav-ing money on gas. If you areknown to be the local hero offishing then be as inconspicuous

Priorities

as possible and leavethe boat at home.

The smart anglerknows what fish canbe coolered inshore atthe moment (redfish, trout, sheepshead, shark, and theall tasty pompano) and offshore(trigger, grouper, bigger sharks, the hard fighting amberjack (AJ),tuna, and different species ofsnapper except the infamous RedSnapper) and soon to be cobiaonce the water temp is near 70degrees.

If you know some secretspots in the bay you can catchsome grouper and snapper butmake sure you know the rules

and regs of what you can keepand what can cost you a lot ofmoney in fines. Why would youwant to keep a juvenile fish whenyou can let it go and catch it whenit has had breakfast, lunch, anddinner for a few years?

Until then, enjoy your dayson the water fishing, cruising, ordoing the what nots at home. Justremember, nothing beats cominghome exhausted with the fish youspent all day working to catch.

Very soon we will be cel-ebrating St. Patrick’s Day. In thechurch denomination to which Iserve, saints are not high on theradar screen. We have no mecha-nism for raising people to saint-hood, either posthumously orotherwise. We don’t pray to thesaints, though we have no quar-rel with those who do. We dosometimes speak of people beingsaints with a small “s”, whichgenerally refer to those who seemto fulfill all the requirements ofexceptionally good people. But,we do go along with the culturein observing St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick is traditionallyknown for removing all thesnakes out of Ireland, which is

false, as are many of the storiesassociated with him. We knowhe was born in Britain to wealthyparents, and at the age of sixteenwas abducted and taken to Ire-land. After about six years heescaped, got involved in religionand returned to Ireland as aChristian missionary. He washighly regarded and today, notonly the Irish, but many peoplecelebrate his special day. Somecelebrate with great gusto andothers are rather subdued, buthowever we celebrate it weshould remember that Patrickserves as a good example of whatone person can do. In that sense,we can all be saints with a small“s”!

Saint Patrick was a mission-ary in Ireland during the 5th cen-tury. Historians believe he wasborn in southwestern Britain ap-proximately 389. His name atthat point was Succat.

During his young life,Succat was kidnapped andbrought to Ireland and renamedPatrick. It is thought that helived in either the County Autrimor County Connacht for six yearsas a herdsman and slave, and thatit was during this time that hehad a vision. He managed to es-cape to the northern coast ofGaul and was later ordained apriest. Upon this change he de-cided to return to Armagh, a townin northern Ireland and foundeda church. After 431 Patrick suc-ceeded St. Palladius, who wasIreland's first bishop.

There are two surviving pa-

pers written by Patrick in Latinthat attest to his familiarity withthe vulgate translation of theBible. (Basically the vulgate wasa translation from Hebrew toGreek to Latin. The Latin versionof the Bible was considered to beauthentic by the Council ofTrent.) One of his papers, en-titled, Confessions, showed SaintPatrick to be an adherent ofPelagianism. (This is a rationaleand considered to be hereticaldoctrine emphasizing humanfree will and minimizing theneed for divine intervention and

redemption.) In addition to hiswriting skills he also composedmusic. Saint Patrick wrote astrange chant called the Lonicawhich is found in the Book ofHymns.

He is also known for his cre-ativity with the shamrock. Heused it to emphasize the "Trin-ity" as defined by the church dur-ing his life. Saint Patrick's Dayis actually a feast day on March17. This day allows Christians totake a short break from Lent andto celebrate the beginnings of theIrish conversion to Christianity.

I've been searching for a path,But I haven't found one yet.My path might find me,Yet I doubt it, can't you see.I've been searching mighty long,And have been waiting, too.

And suddenly have the urge to feel mighty blue.I don't understand it.No, I don't.All I understand are wills and won'ts.So, I keep searching. Hoping my search will end.It hasn't yet, but, then, I'm only 10.
