ISO 2015 Standards The International Standards Organization (founded in 1946 in Geneva, Switzerland), known as ISO, has developed a series of standards for quality systems. It is a generic standard, broadly applicable to any type of organization. ISO 2015 Standards

• The International Standards Organization (founded in 1946 in Geneva, Switzerland), known as ISO, has developed a series of standards for quality systems.

• It is a generic standard, broadly applicable to any type of organization.

• Three standards of ISO 2015 are:

ISO 9000:2015 Quality Management Systems - Fundamentals and Vocabulary

• This International Standard provides the fundamental concepts, principles and vocabulary, i.e. essential background for the proper understanding and implementation of quality management systems.

• This International Standard contains seven quality management principles. For each quality management principle, there is a “statement” describing each principle, a “rationale” explaining why the organization would address the principle, “key benefits” that are attributed to the principles, and “possible actions” that an organization can take in applying the principle.

• ISO 9000, ISO 9001 and related ISO quality management standards are based on seven quality management principles : – customer focus,

– leadership,

– engagement of people,

– process approach,

– improvement,

– evidence-based decision making,

– relationship management.

• ISO 9001:2015 specifies requirements for a quality management system when an organization:

a) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and

b) aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

• All the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 are generic and are intended to be applicable to any organization, regardless of its type or size, or the products and services it provides.

The potential benefits to an organization of implementing a quality management system based on this International Standard are:

a) the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements,

b) facilitating opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction,

c) addressing risks and opportunities associated with its context and objectives,

d) the ability to demonstrate conformity to specified quality management system requirements.

• This International Standard promotes the adoption of a process approach when developing, implementing and improving the effectiveness of a quality management system, to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer requirements.

• This approach enables the organization to understand and manage the interrelationships and interdependencies among the processes of the system, so that the overall performance of the organization can be enhanced.

The application of the process approach in a quality management system enables:

a) understanding and consistency in meeting requirements,

b) the consideration of processes in terms of added value,

c) the achievement of effective process performance,

d) improvement of processes based on evaluation of data and information.

• The PDCA cycle can be briefly described as follows: Plan: establish the objectives of the system and its processes, and the resources needed to deliver results in accordance with customers' requirements and the organization's policies, and identify and address risks and opportunities; Do: implement what was planned; Check: monitor and (where applicable) measure processes and the resulting products and services against policies, objectives, requirements and planned activities, and report the results; Act: take actions to improve performance, as necessary.

• The PDCA cycle can be applied to all processes and to the quality management system as a whole.

• The PDCA cycle enables an organization to ensure that its processes are adequately resourced and managed, and that opportunities for improvement are determined and acted on.

• Risk is the effect of uncertainty.

• Any such uncertainty can have positive or negative effects.

• Risk is inherent in all aspects of a quality management system. There are risks in all systems, processes and functions. Risk-based thinking ensures these risks are identified, considered and controlled throughout the design and use of the quality management system.

• In ISO 9001:2015 risk-based thinking needs to be considered from the beginning and throughout the system, making preventive action inherent to planning, operation, analysis and evaluation activities.

• In ISO 9001:2015 risks and opportunities are often cited together. Opportunity is not the positive side of risk. An opportunity is a set of circumstances which makes it possible to do something. Taking or not taking an opportunity then presents different levels of risk.

• To conform to the requirements of this International Standard, an organization needs to plan and implement actions to address risks and opportunities. Addressing both risks and opportunities establishes a basis for increasing the effectiveness of the quality management system, achieving improved results and preventing negative effects.

The concept of risk-based thinking is explained in the introduction of ISO 9001:2015 as an integral part of the process approach. ISO 9001:2015 uses risk-based thinking in the following way:

Clause 4 – the organization is required to determine its QMS processes and to address its risks and opportunities

Clause 5 – top management is required to

promote awareness of risk-based thinking

determine and address risks and opportunities that can affect product /service conformity

Clause 6 – the organization is required to identify risks and opportunities related to QMS performance and take appropriate actions to address them

Clause 7 – the organization is required to determine and provide necessary resources

Clause 8 – the organization is required to manage its operational processes

Clause 9 – the organization is required to monitor, measure, analyse and evaluate effectiveness of actions taken to address the risks and opportunities

Clause 10 – the organization is required to correct, prevent or reduce undesired effects and improve the QMS and update risks and opportunities

• By considering risk throughout the system and all processes the likelihood of achieving stated objectives is improved, output is more consistent and customers can be confident that they will receive the expected product or service.

• Risk-based thinking:

– improves governance

– establishes a proactive culture of improvement

– assists with statutory and regulatory compliance

– assures consistency of quality of products and services

– improves customer confidence and satisfaction

– successful companies intuitively incorporate risk-based thinking.

Use risk-based thinking in building your management system and processes:

• Identify what your risks are – it depends on context

• Understand your risks

• Plan actions to address the risks: How can I avoid or eliminate the risk? How can I mitigate risks?

• Implement the plan – take action

• Check the effectiveness of the action – does it work?

• Learn from experience – improve
