What is Asset Management and ISO55000?Asset Management is about ensuring that the assets deliver maximum value. This means making sure that an asset:

delivers its functional requirements in line with the business objectives and does so in the most economical, safe, sustainable and relaible manner.

The goal of the ISO55000 standards is to define the minimum requirements for a joined up, whole life cycle, asset management system.

It can be applied to all types of assets; physical equipment & infrastructure, people, information, financial assets, intellectual property and reputation.

ISO55000 – Principles and terminology; ISO55001 – Asset Management - management systems – requirements;ISO55002 – Guidelines for application.

Why should an organisation apply ISO55000?Greater co-ordination, alignment, clarity, and credibility in the governance and value achieved by asset management;

Improved management of risk including: financial risks, environmental risks, social risk, risks to safety, reputation and liability to prosecution;

Improved customer service levels and outputs, as less interruption helps you meet your clients’ needs and your business expectations;

Improved financial performance through lower asset life cycle costs, improved asset performance and enhanced asset life, and

Improved operational efficiency and effectiveness, through applying good practices and continual improvement.

Assets are at the Heart of the organisationThese ISO standards place assets at the heart of the organisation, inside the circle of asset and life cycle activities, which are directed and controlled by the asset management system.

All of the asset management capabilities within the entire organisation should be involved and coordinated by the management system.

In context:

Asset portfolio – assets that are within the scope of the asset system;

Asset management system – the set of interacting elements that establish the asset management policy, asset management objectives and processes to achieve the objectives;

Asset management – the coordinated activities of the organisation to realise value from assets, and

Managing the organisation – the leadership and establishment of culture motivation and competencies.
