Cinema as an extension of artistic expression is not merely a vehicle for popular entertainment but, may also be utilized as a platform for dealing with realistic and thought provoking situations of burning social issues that develop into the dark corners of the human mind of the suicide prone. Raja Banerjee's maiden vehicle through his Bengali feature lm Phirey Elam, premiered recently at Nandan on February 9 is a case in point that purportedly offers some lessons in life. But before screening of the lm, the director Raja Banerjee in the presence of his cast members coupled with the director's mother Saswati Mukherjee, a veteran actress in her own right, announced to members of the press about his forthcoming project namely, the shooting of his next lm Kalo Sunya (Black Hole), a lm based on the theme of tracing the lives of the lm fraternity frustrated by their unfullled dreams and desires. The casting ropes in Manoj Mitra, Debika Mitra, Saheb Chatterjee, Kanchan Mullick, Soma Chakraborty, Anamika Saha, Chanchal Ghosh, Rimjhim Gupta, Palash Ganguly and Kharaj Mukherjee. The shooting of Kalo Sunyo commences sometime in March this year. Phirey Elam (A Return Journey) with story idea, screenplay and direction by Raja Banerjee is far from being entertaining and, sometimes the dialogues and acting lapses into melodrama.
