A natural paradise

If there’s such a thing as the perfect combination of culture, nature and gastronomy, then you’ll find it in Asturias. The first thing to catch your attention when you travel to this region, known as Green Spain, is its spectacular scenery. This can be seen in places such as the Picos de Europa National Park, and at one of its most legendary sites: the Covadonga Lakes.

As well as the mountains, you’ll be able to enjoy beautiful beaches in holiday resorts such as Llanes, Ribadesella, Gijón and Cudillero. These magnificent settings are ideal to contemplate from any of the numerous viewing points, or for enjoying a range of water sports such as surfing.Gastronomy in Asturias is synonymous of good food. Cabrales cheese, the typical Asturian bean stew known as “fabada”, cider made from local apples... There is a whole host of typical dishes and products that are guaranteed to leave visitors with a delicious aftertaste. Its cultural attractions include a range of important monuments: the delightful churches of Santa María

Asturias and ShanghaiShort-Haul route: Asturias

del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo or San Julián de Prados, among others, which have been declared World Heritage sites by the UNESCO, as well as the various archaeological sites, caves and museums of rock art to be found throughout the area, featuring spectacular paintings and engravings dating from as long ago as 25,000 years B.C.

Potential RoutesIn 2012 there were 92,445 emigrants that traveled mainly to Argentina (6,913) and Belgium (4,669). Additionally during 2012 nearly 2,100

indirect passengers travelled between Asturias and Brussels.

On the other hand Asturias received 48,310 immigrants that came mainly from Rumania (9,672), Portugal (2,975), Marruecos (2,952), Brasil (2,936) and Colombia (2,694).

New Incentive Scheme

The General State Budget 2014 in Spain establishes a new incentive scheme at Aena’s airports for the year 2014. The draft currently considers an incentive of a 50% discount in the

passenger charge during 2014 and an additional 25% discount in 2015, for airlines that add growth to the routes compared with the traffic experienced in 2013. This discount would be applied to the proportion of passengers that the airline contributes to the route growth, with a cap fixed at the airline’s growth at the airport and in the whole of the network.

This incentive would be increased to a 100% discount in 2014 if the route is a new destination, with 75% paid in 2014 and the balance of 25% in 2015 if the passenger volume is maintained.

General overview

This historical and civilized city with a long history is the largest city by population in China, and its name literally means the city by the sea.

According to the National Statistics Institute of Spain there are 176,802 Chinese people living in Spain, mainly in Madrid and Catalonia, and there are 2,543 Spaniards living in China.

From the commercial perspective Spain exported in 2012, 3,8 billion € to China in chemicals, industrial technology, raw materials and intermediate products, and imported 17,6 billion € from China, mainly in fashion, IT and furniture.

Traffic statistics

In 2012, 181,000 Chinese tourists travelled to Spain, mainly to Madrid, Andalucia and Barcelona.

The annual traffic statistics of the last 5 years show an average variation of +20,3% on commercial passengers between Spain and China.

Spain and China have held meetings in 2010 and 2011 to foster the Chinese tourism to Spain with easier ways to

Long-Haul route: Shanghai

Asturias and Shanghai

issue visas, more flights between the two countries, Chinese travel guides and other collaborations.

Potential routes without direct traffic

Spain has no direct connection with Shanghai, however during 2012 nearly 101,000 indirect passengers travelled between Spain and Shanghai. Also during 2012, 234,000 indirect passengers travelled between Latin America and China. As Spain is the main gateway between Latin America

and Asia, a potential route from Shanghai could capture an important share of this indirect traffic.

New Incentive Scheme

The General State Budget 2014 in Spain establishes a new incentive scheme at Aena’s airports for the year 2014. The draft currently considers an incentive of a 50% discount in the passenger charge during 2014 and an additional 25% discount in 2015, for airlines that add growth to the routes compared with the traffic experienced

in 2013.

Carnival in Spain

There are two celebrations in Spain that stand out and have gained much deserved international fame: those of Cadiz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

For a whole week the streets of Tenerife are flooded with people from all over the world creating a concentrated festive atmosphere difficult to describe. Carnival on this island has become one of the world’s largest celebrations, is an explosion of joy and freedom that perfectly brings together the essence of this universal fiesta.

Months beforehand, the people of Tenerife prepare the floats that will travel the city streets. Songs and musical pieces are rehearsed,

and parodies about current politics or famous people are created. All Carnival groups participate in the opening parade on the first day (the Saturday before Carnival): Brazilian style groups, bands of adult and child street musicians, choirs, and of course thousands and thousands of people in costume. The Carnival Queen is selected from among the parade’s most beautiful girls, who are then royally outfitted in gorgeous dresses specifically designed for the occasion. On Carnival Tuesday participants experience the festival’s apotheosis in an enclosure in which all participants gather; it is the culmination of what has truly been a metamorphosis, the closing of this long parenthesis in the day-to-day life of Tenerife which its Carnival celebration represents.

Carnival in Cadiz

Although the essence of the Carnival celebration is the same as in Tenerife it has a few original characteristics that give it its own personality. In Cadiz the fiesta has a long prologue with competitions of choirs, “comparsas” and “chirigotas” (humorous carnival groups) held in the Falla Theatre. The “chirigotas”, street musicians, choirs and quartets are Carnaval groups that compete to create the most visually and musically original fun stage performance.

After the famous competition, everything bursts out onto the streets. The different groups move through the streets of the city’s historic quarter,

singing popular ballads, tangos, cuplés, popurris or pasodobles that they have composed, which always have a sharp note of politic or social satire. Not only organized groups participate in the festivities, but the entire city does, creating a tumultuous atmosphere of happiness and color. The fiesta culminates with the grand parade on Piñata Sunday, a jubilant night in which the collective delirium reaches its most festive, joyful and colorful manifestation.

Imagination, fantasy, vitality, humor and public spirit are the values that mark these two Spanish fiestas, admired and envied throughout the world.

New Incetive Scheme

The General State Budget 2014 in Spain establishes a new incentive scheme at Aena’s airports for the year 2014. The draft currently considers an incentive of a 50% discount in the passenger charge during 2014 and an additional 25% discount in 2015, for airlines that add growth to the routes

compared with the traffic experienced in 2013. This discount would be applied to the proportion of passengers that the airline contributes to the route growth, with a cap fixed at the airline’s growth at the airport and in the whole of the network.

This incentive would be increased to a 100% discount in 2014 if the route is a

new destination, with 75% paid in 2014 and the balance of 25% in 2015 if the passenger volume is maintained.

Marketing Support Actions

Aena Aeropuertos offers Marketing Support actions for opening new routes that may include opening flight ceremony, water arch, publicity at the airport, banner on the airport’s web

page, press release, promotion of the routes through the UNAV (travel agencies union) and promotional discounts such as Airport Parking and Retail and Food & Beverages for the passengers.

The historic centre, also known as the “Madrid of Los Austrias”, and the spectacular Plaza Mayor square are a living example of the nascent splendour of the city in the 16th and 17th centuries. Near Plaza Mayor is the area known as the “aristocratic centre” where the Royal Palace is located, an imposing building dating from the 17th century featuring a mixture of Baroque and classicist styles. Beside it is Plaza de Oriente square, the Teatro Real opera house, and the modern cathedral of La Almudena which was consecrated in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. Puerta del Sol square is surrounded by a varied and select area of shops and businesses, and the “Paseo del Arte” art route are further elements in an array of monuments which includes the Bank of Spain building, the Palace of Telecommunications, and the fountains of Cibeles and Neptune.Art and culture play a key role in Madrid’s life. The capital has over 60 museums that include the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, dedicated to contemporary Spanish art.

Madrid’s parks and gardens like Retiro park, Casa de Campo and Juan Carlos I park offer inhabitants and visitors the chance to enjoy the sunshine, stroll, row on its lakes or feed the squirrels, in one of the greenest capitals in Europe. The two Conference Centres, the modern trade fair ground in the Campo de las Naciones, and over 80,000 places in other meeting centres make Madrid one of Europe’s most attractive business hubs. But if there’s one thing that sets Madrid apart, it must be its deep and

infectious passion for life that finds its outlet in the friendly and open character of its inhabitants. Concerts, exhibitions, ballets, a select theatrical offering, the latest film releases, the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of the best Spanish and international gastronomy, to savour the charms of its bars and taverns... all these are just a few of the leisure options on offer in Madrid. There is also a tempting array of shops and businesses featuring both traditional establishments and leading stores offering top brands and international labels.

Madrid’s lively nightlife is another key attraction of Spain’s capital, due to its variety and the exciting atmosphere to be found in its bars, pubs, clubs and flamenco halls. Other daytime entertainment options include traditional outdoor dances, popular festivities and the San Isidro bullfighting festival, regarded as being the most important in the world.
