Sherburn Community Informer is kindly funded by Sherburn in Elmet Parish Council.
An Invitation for Community Groups and Clubs who may be interested in using this
facility to attend an information event at the Eversley Park Centre
6.30pm Tuesday 16th April 2019.
We are in the process of securing funding to upgrade the current facilities and extend the clubhouse on Eversley Park to make
playing at Sherburn, as good an experience as possible. In addition to refurbished team changing and shower areas, we will
have a new extension with kitchen, separate changing areas for match day officials and a disabled toilet. The Rugby League
are also showing interest themselves as they have grants available for grass roots Rugby, which may lead to us being able to
also add a floor to the extension which will then allow us to accommodate separate Female and Juniors changing areas whilst
being able to retain a gymnasium.
This investment in the village can form part of a broader community sporting facility which we would like to open up to more
users. We have already approached local cycling and running clubs and we would like to welcome any other groups that may
be interested in using this facility.

Peter Pan Nursery has a charity shop situated behind Moorhouse Opticians, off Finkle
Hill in Sherburn in Elmet. Our shop is run entirely by volunteers and all of the profits
raised go to support the nursery. We are always looking to recruit volunteers to help
in our charity shop, so if you would like to find out further information regarding this,
please call Kay on 01977 681863.
Peter Pan Nursery are currently looking to recruit volunteers to
help support our qualified and experienced staff with the care of
our children in the nursery. Training will be provided and you will
be required to complete a DBS . If you would like to find out more
please contact Melanie on 01977 681863.
As a small, independent charity, we do struggle to obtain funds for daily running costs so we greatly appreciate any
donations we receive. Could your place of employment select us as their ‘charity of the year’ or hold fundraisers for
us, such as ‘dress down Fridays’ or bake sales etc.? Huge thanks to
the following local businesses and groups who have supported us so
far in 2019 – Scarthingwell Golf Club, - Optare, Eggborough Spar &
Chip Shop, Louise Gomerson & Colleagues at Network Rail, LNER &
Northern Rail, Roy Gomerson, Jason Chalkley & Ex-Members of Selby
Railway Sports & Social Club (Golf Section), Elmet Lions Oz Taxis. Also
thanks so much to all those who have supported us in the past.

Sherburn Informer
It's a pleasure (and a relief) to be able to
write this Report for the Informer. For a
while it looked like we might lose our
community newsletter and at a time
when there is so much happening in
Sherburn that would have been serious-
ly bad news. The Community Informer
had been run for years by a small (very
small!) team at the Community Associa-
tion, but that couldn't continue (to use
modern jargon it wasn't sustainable).
The Parish Council have worked closely
with the Community Trust to find a so-
lution and the Community Informer is
reborn as the Sherburn Informer. Our
population is growing and we need to
keep in touch with residents so they
know about everything that's happen-
ing in Sherburn.
Welcome To Sherburn
The Parish Council and Community
Trust are also cooperating to produce a
Welcome to Sherburn booklet which
will be distributed to every house in
Sherburn; this will be an invaluable ref-
erence source on the many different
facilities, resources, events, clubs and
societies we have.
Planning/Development
There is a lot of building work in Sher-
burn. Work continues on the Redrow/
Persimmon site off Low Street and ac-
tivity has recently begun on the Hodg-
son's Lane site on the northeast side of
Sherburn. Some disruption is inevitable,
but it's perhaps worth stating that the
acceptable operating hours for noise
generating work on the construction
sites are 08:00-18:00hrs Monday to
Friday, 08:00 to 13:00hrs on Saturday,
and not at all on Sundays and Bank Holi-
days.
If there is a problem you can report it
to the site manager, but please also
let the Parish Council know (details
below). That way we get the full pic-
ture and can respond accordingly if a
contractor claims something is an
isolated incident and we know it is-
n't. We will liaise with Planning En-
forcement at Selby District Council -
they are the people with enforce-
ment powers.
Sherburn 2
Work has now begun on Sherburn2,
the extension to the industrial park
and the planning application to build
industrial units on the former Gas-
coigne Wood site is currently
awaiting a decision.
Smoke Free Places
We have also applied for and re-
ceived a grant to help us keep our
children's playgrounds as smoke free
places. A competition is being run
with local schools to design signage
which will ensure that everyone gets
the message that this is a No Smok-
ing area.
New “Pocket Park”
We have also received a grant to
refurbish the Memorial Garden next
door to the library. This area has be-
come run down, but could be a lovely
"pocket park" close to the centre of
Sherburn and the shops.
Rugby Club Refurbishment
We are also working with the Sher-
burn Bears rugby club to refurbish
the club house at Eversley Park. At
the time of writing we are awaiting a
visit from the Rugby League and
hope to have their support in provid-
ing an ambitious upgrade to allow
the club to flourish.
Sports Hall Rebuild
Staying with sport, the Parish Council
are paying for a feasibility study which
is needed if the funding is going to be
available to rebuild the sports hall at
the High School with a more expan-
sive upgrade. The double benefit
there is that it could be used by the
community and it would also mean it
could be used for a wider range of
sports.
Parish/District Elections
Finally 2nd May is the date for both
Parish and District Council elections.
If you are interested in standing then
please contact the Clerk, Nicola Smith
at the Parish Council office and she
will be happy to provide information
on what is involved. Parish Councillors
do not get paid for their time, but we
are always keen to hear from people
who are interested in becoming in-
volved.
More generally we welcome new ide-
as or concerns. Please call into the
Parish Council office (at the Eversley
Park Centre), telephone (01977)
684666 or email us:

Sherburn High School News
This half term has been an action-packed one as our Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 stu-dents have been sitting mock exams in preparation of their finals in May and June. Much hard work from both students and staff is going into revision and marking, fingers crossed it will pay-off. As always, we have been busy raising funds for one of our house charities and this term it was the turn of Bramham house to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, we are hoping to achieve £1000 but mon-ey is still rolling in. Two of our Sixth Form students have taken up the challenge of walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks in July and have set up a Just Giving page as they are raising money for the British Red Cross, if you would like to support their cause please use the following link https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/phoebeleeshay3p.
We welcomed Year 5 students into school recently to take part in solving the case of the missing Sherbies! They had to investigate staff members through the use of forensics in science and clues in other departments, hopefully they had a great day with us. In other news we’ve had a flying student, success at netball, football and basketball, a parliament workshop and finally, a select group of Year 10 students are involved in the Green Apples project, sampling university life by visiting higher education centres and taking part in aspiration raising activities. They are all relish-ing the thought of becoming undergraduates!
News from your U3A
Where else can you take a trip to Burton Agnes with your camera on Monday, play Mah Jongg with your pals on Tuesday, take a walk with the dog on Wednesday, play badminton on Thursday, learn all about designing a website on Friday, come out to dinner with us on Saturday and visit the local garden centre for lunch on Sunday? And that’s just a quick sample of the 21 group meetings and activities that were going on in a typical week at Sherburn & Villages U3A.
We welcome new members to come and see what we get up to and try out our activities for themselves. So just who can come and join us? Our membership is made up of people from every walk of life who are no longer working full time or have less family responsibilities and are now able to pursue hobbies and activities they may not have had time for previous-ly. Generally our members tend to be over 50 but there’s no age limit at all.
This winter we have continued to grow and we’re delighted that our membership is now well over the 600 mark, drawn we believe by our friendly inclusive activity and interest groups. At the heart of the U3A is sharing skills and knowledge and the breadth of experiences brought by our members means we have groups led by members learning pottery, taking ad-ventures in the countryside with a qualified instructor, improving their languages and enjoying painting and craft skills but there are also a host of other fun activities too - come with us on days out, theatre trips, short breaks and visits in the UK and Europe.
As a charity we keep costs down so that everyone can take advantage of our offering and we hope participate and bring their own skills and experiences along as well.
You can find out all about us and what we get up to on our web-site: www.sherburnu3a.org 0r you can come along to one of our monthly meetings which all members and visitors are welcome to attend and you can meet us with no commitment. Our monthly meetings are held at the Eversley Park Centre in Sherburn at 2pm. See your “What’s On” Guide on page 3 of this issue for details of what’s happening at our meetings in April and May - cost is just £2 including refreshments.
We look forward to welcoming you!

Funding News After the excesses of the Christmas period, many of us are now trying to get active again. To ensure our young people have an opportunity to take part, we at the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust have been providing funding to local sports projects, helping them to purchase the equipment they need.
The Trust provides new grants every year to projects which meet one of the four objectives: conservation, encouraging biodiversity, health and fitness of young people and road safety. To apply you simply need to live within the parish of Sherburn-in-Elmet. This year’s deadline for funding submissions is fast approaching (31st March) so its time to get going with your application. Everything you need to apply can be ac-cessed on our website including application forms and past case studies: http://www.kingspaninsulationcommunitytrust.org/
