Keys to Long-Term InvestingGUEST EDITORIAL

Edward TillmanPrincipal Financial Group

[email protected]

Do the ups and downs inthe financial markets botheryou?

If you answered yes, you’re not alone. The recentturmoil has created uncer-tainty and anxiety for manyinvestors. Especially thosewho haven’t experienced abear market – witnessingonly very short-lived marketdownturns.

Relieve your stock mar-ket jitters. Consider thesethree tips for long-term in-vesting: focus on the long-term, invest regularly anddiversify.

• Focusing on the long-term – If you watch the upsand downs of the marketover a short time period, you’ll often see large fluc-tuations. But if you watch themarkets over a longer time, you’ll find the movementsmuch less dramatic. The keyis not to become too overlyconcerned with the move-ment of the market in one-or even two-year periods, ifyour investment time hori-zon is at least five to sevenyears. History has shownthat the longer you remain in-vested, the greater yourchances for success.

• Investing regularly andconsistently – Doing so will letyou take advantage of swingsin stock prices. When stockprices decrease, you pur-chase more shares and whenprices are higher, you pur-chase fewer shares. Thoughno investment program can

assure a profit or protectagainst loss, investing consis-tently can help you ride outmarket ups and downs. Dol-lar Cost Averaging involvescontinuous investing. Inves-tors need to consider theirability and willingness to con-tinue investing through peri-ods of low price levels.

• Diversification – Don’tput all your eggs in one bas-ket. Instead consider spread-ing your risk by dividing yourmoney among a variety ofasset classes – stocks, bonds, etc.

This way, if one investmentperforms poorly, it only affectspart of your total investments.Keep in mind that no invest-ment strategy, such as assetallocation or diversification, can guarantee a profit or pro-tect against loss in periods ofdeclining values.

While you have no controlover how much the value ofyour investments change, your understanding of thesethree keys should help youmake it through the toughtimes.!

annual reminder to Americansto check household plumbingfixtures and irrigation systemsfor leaks.

“Leaks can add up to morethan 10,000 gallons of waterwasted at home every year—that’s enough to fill a backyardswimming pool,” said PHCCPresident Skip Pfeffer. “Astrained professionals, PHCC isparticipating in Fix a Leak Weekto advise homeowners on howto save money on their utilitybills and to help conserve wa-ter in our community and forfuture generations.”

Prior to and during the ob-servance, PHCC andWaterSense are promotingways to identify and repair drip-ping faucets, running toilets, andleaky showerheads. In mostcases, fixture replacementparts pay for themselvesquickly. Following are a fewwater-saving tips: Reduce fau-cet leaks by checking faucetwashers and gaskets for wear

and, if replacement is needed, hire a professional to install aWaterSense-labeled model.

Leaky toilets are most oftenthe result of a worn toilet flap-per. Getting the rubber flapperreplaced is a quick fix that couldsave a home with a constantlyrunning toilet up to 200 gallonsof water per day. For a leakygarden hose, replace the nylonor rubber hose washer andensure a tight connection to thespigot using pipe tape and awrench. Landscape irrigationsystems should be checkedeach spring before use to makesure they are not damaged byfrost or freezing. If homeownershave to replace a plumbing fix-ture, PHCC reminds them tohire a professional and look forthe WaterSense label.WaterSense-labeled toilets, fau-cets, and (soon) showerheadshave been independentlytested and certified to savewater and perform as well asor better than standard models.Visit www.epa.gov/watersenseto find a WaterSense-labeledproduct.!

I don’t believe anyone inour chapter is using the CIPEterm but this what the ASPENational President says aboutit.

“When reviewing some ofthe Chapter Annual Reports,I couldn’t help but notice a fewChapter officers identifyingthemselves as CIPEs. As allof you know, CIPE is no

longer permitted to be usedby anyone. I would ask all ofthe Chapters to announcethis again to your members. Also, have your Chapter of-ficers stop using the acro-nym. ASPE owns the copy-

right to the term. Therefore, you must receive permissionto use the term. However, permission for its use hasbeen withdrawn. Therefore,no one is entitled to use theterm.”!

I trust you enjoyed theholidays and welcomed2010 with open arms. Manyof us were, and still are, af-fected by the financial crisisof the past year.

Rheem innovation: Theheart of the SPIDERfire is itsinnovative, patented heat-exchange system: a seriesof connected, elongatedtubes immersed in the wa-ter tank and through which

heat is transferred to thewater by gases from thecombustion process. Thesemultiple vertical pipe runsare what give the unit itsunique design, as well as itscolorful name.

bustion gases are blowndown through the largemain flue in the center of theunit They must thentraverse nearly the full lengthof the unit two more times –up another set of tubes andthen down again through athird set, as the systemworks to extract as muchheat energy as possible. Bythe end of this three-phasecycle, the temperature ofthe flue gases will havedropped to between 110°Fand 140°F, or cool enoughfor condensation to begin.(In contrast, flue gases in aconventional 80%-efficientcommercial water heatertypically cool to around420°F to 450°F and there-fore remain in a hot, gas-eous state.)

This condensing processalso has spurred severalother Rheem innovations:

•Corrosion-protection:The flue condensate ishighly acidic and thereforepotentially corrosive. To ex-tend the life of the flue sys-tem, Rheem coats the tubeswith a specially formulatedporcelain enamel that re-sists corrosion.

•Easier, less costly vent-ing: The cool temperaturesof the flue gases permitventing through standardPVC or CPVC tubing, ratherthan more expensive, large-diameter, metal B-vent.“With plastic, the contractorcan install the product virtu-ally anywhere, using almostany piping configuration hefinds workable,” says RonJohnson, product manager. In addition, when workingwith the three smallest mod-els in the line, an installercan use two-inch plasticpipe, as well as three-inch orfour-inch – further loweringhis costs and simplifying hisinstallation.

More durable flue de-sign: The large and complexflue network of theSPIDERfire eliminates “hotspots” — points in the designwhere hot gases could con-centrate, damaging the sys-tem over time and evencausing premature failure. But the smooth, porcelain-coated contours of theRheem heat transfer systemare engineered to avoidsuch problems and maintaina more uniform temperatureacross the entire network. The goal is a more — d u -rable product that will betterwithstand the test of time, even in heavy-commercialapplications.

•Energy-efficient “wet-

SPIDERfireCONTINUED from PAGE 14 base” design: Rheem engi-

neered a “wet base” ap-proach for the lower portionof its flue system, suspend-ing the first two legs of theflue network in water, ratherthan connecting them to thebottom of the tank. “Hereagain, potential hot spotsand premature metal fatigueare eliminated,” saysJohnson. “In addition, thisdesign also boosts efficiency

because heat is not lostthrough the bottom of thetank, as would be the casewith a dry base design.”

Rheem exclusives: Fol-lowing are a number of ad-ditional key features of thenew SPIDERfire line, all ofthem exclusive to Rheemcommercial water heaters

•Fast and accurate diag-nostics: The Advanced Sys-tem Sentinel™ Diagnostic

System is standard on allSPIDERfire units, enablinginstallers and service tech-nicians to monitor key func-tions and components. A liq-uid crystal display (LCD),positioned at eye level at thetop of each unit, offers easy-to-read status reports onwater heater operations. The LCD’s memory includesa scrollable, operational his-tory to detail usage patterns

and facilitate troubleshoot-ing.

•Multiple water inletsand outlets: Two pairs of hot-and cold-water connectionson either side of the waterheater jacket provide instal-lation flexibility, especially indifficult retrofit installations.
