Namaste, It gives us great pleasure and honour to have been elected as the Executive Committee for the year 2010/2011. As we approach Navratri and Diwali, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past years events and look forward to the year ahead. Throughout the year we have celebrated our religious events, with the most recent being the celebration of the month of Shravan and our 27th Murti Mohatsav in August. Firstly we would like to thank the Mandir committee who day in day out, regardless of the weather make the sacrifice throughout the whole year to come and perform the Puja, Arti and changing of the Vagha in the mornings and the evening. The Mahila have continued their seva, by cooking at all the bhojans throughout the year, preparing prashadi and all aspects of cleaning and preparation for festivities. To increase the Mahila participation, the Mahila have been holding monthly meetings in the Mandir hall to discuss and plan forthcoming events by getting everyone's input and views. The Mahila have continued its support to SPA UK, by taking part in the Mahila Samelan which was held in Leicester and also continued the annual tradition of Anand Bazzar the Bradford Sports day. The youth continue to take part in weekly sports clubs, and participated in the local sports day and HQ Sports day. Exercise classes have continued to run on Wednesday evenings and the Gujarati School runs on Sunday mornings. Congratulations to the students who passed their Gujarati GCSE examinations. We would also like to thank the maintenance committee for their efforts in cleaning, painting and general maintenance of the building. In addition thanks goes to the area secretaries for ensuring that all publications are distributed in a timely manner. The responsibility for the preservation of our language, customs, culture and religion lies with us all. With this in mind, we have many talented people in the community; so whatever your interest or skill set, be it maintenance or religious, please come forward and provide your names to the secretary, you will be most welcome. Finally we would like to thank all our past and present committee members and our Prajapati community for their support over the year. These are the unsung heroes that make the Samaj the success it is and look forward to it continuing into the future. We wish all our members a very Happy Diwali and a Prosperous New Year. What is Diwali? Diwali is the Hindu "festival of lights" which celebrates the New Year. What does Diwali mean? The word Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps” When is Diwali? The date of Diwali changes every year as the day is calculated according to the position of the moon. The date of Diwali falls on 15th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Aaso. Diwali day falls on the amavasya or the no moon day and comes 20 days after the end of Navratri and Dashera. Why is it called the Festival of Lights? People light hundreds of small oil lamps (called divas) and place them around the home. This is to commemorate the part of the story that describes oil lamps being placed outside people’s homes to light the way for Rama and Sitas triumphant homecoming to Ayodhya. The more lamps they light, the more likely it is that Lakshmi will be tempted to visit them. Hindus believe that the goddess brings wealth with her when she visits. Rangoli Patterns People decorate their homes and temples by drawing patterns on the ground outside. The tradition of Rangoli originated in Maharastra and slowly spread to other parts of India. 'Rangoli' is a sanskrit word which means a creative expression of art through the use of colour. They draw these designs with a mixture of rice flour and water. Coloured powder, such as sand, is sometimes used. Hindus hope the goddess Lakshmi will see the beautiful patterns and visit their homes.

Navratri is a nine day festival celebrated during the lunar month of Aso. It begins with the fast of “Navaratri”, and ends with the festivities of “Dashera”. Traditional dances such as Dandiya Raas and Garba are performed during the nine nights. The nine days and nights of Navratri are dedicated to Amba Maa. Amba Maa is the personification of the active side of the divine “shakti” energy of Lord Shiva. Amba Maa is usually portrayed as riding a lion, and carrying weapons in her many arms. Dashera marks the end of Navratri. Dashera, also known as Vijayadashmi ('Vijay' meaning 'victory' and 'Dashmi meaning 'tenth day) as it is believed that it was on this day that Lord Ram killed the demon king, Ravan and won over Lanka. This signifies the triumph of good over evil.
