Hi to all members new and old. The 2014 season went well and the events have been well attended.

I would like to thank all the board members and committee chairs for their unending tireless hours put in to make the Association run efficiently.

I would also like to thank all the volunteers who have worked hard to help with all the clean up and daily maintenance that is needed to keep the Association grounds well groomed.

Remember that many hands make light work, and this is your Association.

Please follow the community's speed limits (10-15 mph). There are many walkers and bikers on the roads, so drive cars SLOWLY.

For those that are new to the association the membership fees are $425.00 per household. The road assessment of $100.00 is for each 129 houses in the community. This is used to maintain the roads.

If you have any questions or concerns you can contact a board member, see the list on the Shady Lake website shadylake.tripod.com. You can email the board at [email protected] or contact me personally at [email protected].

Have a safe and enjoyable year.

SHADY LAKE FACTS

Shady Lake is a man made lake, fed by

runoff from the surrounding mountains and

is used for boating and fishing. The lake is

approximately 7 acres, and only about 6-feet

deep at the deepest spot which is near Big

Rock over by the dam. The dam was erected

around 1952 to separate the pool from the

lake. Actually before this, the lake used to

flow into, and out, of the pool freely with

screens to keep the fish out.

MEMBER NEWS

On Saturday November 22, 2014 the well holding tank for the clubhouse went through the roof of the pool house. It went through the trap door in the roof.

Residents on Rock Road heard the explosion and went to investigate. There was the well tank on the ground near the pool house and wood from the roof all around.

Needless to say this will be a major project for the Spring of 2015 to get the association to pass all inspections.

Your help will be needed in this project!

Please contact Chuck at 973-208-1786, or [email protected]

Most of the following events take place at the clubhouse.

Tony Poskitt came up with an idea that was both a fun souvenir for Shady Lake residents, and helped raise money for the association.

He had Shady Lake beer koozies printed up in four colors, and sold them in the com-munity throughout the summer. They were a big hit, and he donated 100% of the profits to Shady Lake! Hats off to Tony for his time and creative idea!

MEMBER NEWSneW to shAdy lAke?

A Little HistoryShady Lake started out as a summer community in the 30’s. There were dirt roads and the only amenity was the lake. At the time, the residents formed an Association. They took out a community bond to have the pool built, and bought the 50 acres of land in the back of the development as recreational land, protecting it from other land developers. The association then bought the clubhouse (which was originally a general store). How it all Works: There are mandatory road fees for all residents, as well as optional membership to the SLPOA (Shady Lake Property Owners Association), which provides the benefits listed in the next column. Membership fees are distributed to support the following:n Supplies for maintaining & running the pooln Contractors to treat the laken Foresters to mark tree and file permits for

our tree farm, and the rental of equipment for tree removal

n Contractors to maintain the roadsn Fire inspections, permits and maintenance

➊ Stack 6 or 7 craft sticks on top of one another and use two rubber bands to hold them together near each end.

➋Lay two more craft sticks perpendicular to the stack, one on top and one on bottom.

Pinch one of the ends together and secure with another rubber band.

➌ Attach the two pieces and create the tension needed to make the catapult spring by wrapping a rubber band in an X where the two pieces meet.

➎ Now you're ready to find a small object to launch! You can try mini marshmallows, buttons, ping-pong balls, dried beans or pasta shapes.

➍Glue a bottle cap at the top of the catapult arm and allow it to dry before using.

CHUCK’S CORNER ROAD INFORMATION

By Chuck Carbone

As everyone knows the roads in Shady Lake are narrow and winding.

Vehicles, pedestrians and children utilize the roads. You can help keep the roads safe by doing the following:

n Drive slowly through the lake; the speed limit is between 10 and 15 mph.

n Keep your bushes and shrubbery trimmed back from the road. If you live on a curved section perhaps the shrubs can be trimmed low, as this will help with visibility.

n Sweep the road stone and leaves in front of your property, especially now that winter is over.

n Do not drain sump pumps or leader drains directly onto the roads.

n Try not to park on the roads, especially on the curves.

n Keep the roads and any drainage structures by your house clear.

The Association is responsible for the paving of the roads in Shady Lake. In 1994 Shady Lake joined in the Township of West Milford’s “Private Road Assistance Program”. The purpose of this program is to help lake communities with the paving of their roads. Shady Lake has used this program to help in the paving of the roads. We have also been contracting with private contractors to do the paving work and have also done some drainage improvements.

As of the summer of 2007 all the roads in Shady Lake have been paved.

Reminders for New Members and Previous Members:- Road fees are paid by ALL 129 residents equally.- Our roads are Private….we maintain them with the road assessment

- Our roads were originally dirt and then stone and now paved…they have come a long way

n Your Township tax dollars pay for the snow plowing of our roads, not your road assessment

n The Township hires private contractors to plow the roads... We have no say in who plows.

n As private roads we are plowed last, but now, due to our paved roads, they plow us quicker

n The Township does come in and sand (but has not been coming on weekends due to Overtime problems) ...but if enough people call the DPW and complain who knows what may happen

The roads of Shady Lake are private roads. The Shady Lake Park Property Owners Association maintains these roads. Each resident pays the same road assessment fee to the association. This fee is used to pave the roads and maintain the existing drainage systems.

WE do not pay for the plowing of the roads in the winter!!! We do not have any say as to who will be plowing the roads of Shady Lake. The cost of plowing is through your tax dollars.

If a resident is found to be discharging sump pumps to the road they are subject to a summons from the Township.

More Important Septic System Information... Dear West Milford Resident:

As you may be aware, the Township recently enacted a Septic Manage-ment Ordinance. This ordinance was developed due to mandates placed on the municipality by the New Jersey Department of Environ-mental Protection.

The ordinance requires property owners in the Township of West Milford to obtain a permit to operate their septic system. The initial permit will be valid for a period of (3) years. Permits will be given to the homeowner after said pumping takes place by the Septic Sludge Pumper, who is licensed by the Township. In order to renew the permit after their initial (3) year period, property owners must either have their septic systems pumped or provide valid docu-mentation that the system is not in need of pumping.

Included with a letter that will be sent out to all homeowners at specific times during the year will be some information pertaining to septic systems and their mainte-nance. Copies of your septic system and other information pertaining to your property may be available in the Health Department files.

All that is required at this time is for you to contact a septic pumper by the permitting date listed for your area. There is no fee for this permit.

In the event, if you have had your septic pumped already, please send a copy of the receipt with your date of pumping and your name and addressed with telephone number clearly visible. Your original receipt will become your permit until your time as come to pump once again.

William J. Wallace, Health Officer

In 2008 The Township of West Milford passed Ordinance No. 2008-050, the septic system pumping ordinance. This ordinance requires existing, new and proposed individual and non-individual subsurface sewage disposal systems to be pumped out at least once every three (3) years in order to minimize future malfunctions of such systems. The system must be pumped out by a septic system pumper that is registered in West Milford.

The township recently enacted a septic management ordi-nance. The ordinance requires property owners in the town-ship of West Milford to obtain a permit to operate their septic system.

This ordinance was developed in accordance with the provi-sions set forth in N.J.A.C. 7:9A-1.1 and for the purpose of regu-lating the management of such systems to protect the public against system failures and resultant pollution.

Registered septic sludge removers have permits provided to them by the Health Department for West Milford residents.

A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas, and talked with an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.”

The rancher said, “Okay, but don’t go in that field over there…”, as he pointed out the location.

The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, ” Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me !” Reaching into his rear pants pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish… On any land !! No questions asked or answers given!! Do you understand old man?!”

The rancher kindly nodded, apologized, and went about his chores. Moments later, the rancher heard loud screams. He looked up, and saw the DEA officer running for his life, being chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull…With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The old rancher threw down his tools, ran as fast as he could to the fence and yelled at the top

of his lungs…

"Your badge, SHOW HIM YOUR BADGE!!"
