2016 Parish Council meetings to be held on the 3rd Monday of the month

All meetings at the Methodist Chapel 730pm

Lisa and Ricki you have been in the village a year now What brought you to the village

We had the opportunity to run The Mended Drum and couldnt refuse We just loved the people and the surroundings

Despite the fact that Ricki had already agreed to it before I had even seen it

Did you have a pub background

I have worked behind bars and pubs since I was 18 but Ricki had never poured a pint before We love our real ales and gin We set about a mission to squeeze as many real ales on the bar as possible We now have a choice of 7 craft ales at any one time

What is your vision for food at The Drum

We want to build up the food side although we always want to be a pub where you can get some lovely fresh homemade food as opposed to restaurant with a bar We have redesigned the restaurant to make it more welcoming especially for families

Ricky which is your favourite ale that youve been able to source

To be honest I cant pick just one we are working with some great breweries like ATOM and BRASS CASTLE where you cant get have a bad pint The one Im most looking forward to is the breakfast IPA Assam and marmalade tea This said I am so excited about our winter beer festival where we will have 15 hand pulls at any one time

Lisa tell us about your Gin Club

Gin Club is making Thursday my favourite day of the week Where you can have any premium gin and tonic for pound400 and now with our Steak Night addition

where you can get 2 steaks for pound1500 it s a great night of the week I adore my gin and love learning about the weird and wonderful f lavour pairing you can do Although Ricki winces when hes sees the invoice

Why have you chosen to source food ingredients and beers locally

There is so much amazing produce and passion for food and ale here we couldnt have decided not to use this resource As Ricki l ikes to tell me regularly everything is better when it s Yorkshire I have to agree we have even started to source local spirits including Masons Yorkshire gin

Whats happening at The Drum over Christmas and New Year

We have a beer festival 27-29th Nov l ive music We have a full pub take over by ATOM 11th December where we will be handing over the bar restaurant and kitchen to the ATOM guys what could possibly go wrong We are having a charity night on the 22nd December for testicular cancer where we are having a race night and dart knock out match For us Christmas and new year is a time to have fun at the drum We love the community and family side of this time of year and love being part of it

We adore our new life in Huby and love what we do We have raised nearly pound2000 for local causes and charit ies in a year but we couldnt do any of this without the amazing people here For us the vil lage pub is a hub of the community weve had birthdays christenings charity nights stag dos engagement parties there was even a space hopper competit ion

Many people in the parish will be aware that the Revd Chris Ellis suffered quite a serious stroke in late September We are pleased to say that he is now recovering but he will be unable to return to his duties for several months at best In the meantime Canon Robert Law who lives in Stil l ington is standing in for the most part and will take care of any special requests baptisms weddings funerals etc His telephone number is 810940 We ask that you do not approach Chris Ellis until further notice as thoughts of his duties may exacerbate his situation

Huby Pr imary School Result s in t op 2 of t he count ry

Primary school was thril led to receive a letter from Nick HubyGibb Minster of State for School Reform congratulating them on their very high standard of

achievement in the 2015 Phonics screening check that all children in Year 1 nationally take 100 of pupils passed the screening check which meant that Huby school is in the top 2 of all schools in the country The school is delighted by this result and the fact that they have been consistently above national averages since the phonics check was introduced The teaching of reading at Huby is given the highest priority and this was recognised by Ofsted in June 2015 who stated reading was outstanding at Huby Many thanks to all the parents at Huby who regularly l isten to their children read and support the school in this valuable way

Out and about

All the children have had a busy f irst half term extending their learning outside of the classroom The children in Years 3 and 4 visited Eden Camp as part of their topic on World War 2 They spent the day exploring the sights sounds and smells of l iving in Britain during

World War 2 experiencing the living conditions of l ife on a U boat to hearing and seeing the sights and sounds of l iving through the Blitz and the evenings spent in Anderson Shelters

Children in Year 5 and 6 honed their geo-caching and map skills and undertook river investigations on the

River Esk as part of their geography f ield work at Danby Moor on the North York Moors Luckily the weather was excellent and the children had a wonderful day

Our youngest children also were out and about and the children in Early Years went on their f irst school trip to Harlow Carr Gardens in Harrogate All the children in Early Years and Years 1 and 2 explored the gardens and sculptures whilst spending the morning looking at dif ferent seeds and planting their own lettuce leaves Their green f ingers have paid off and the children will soon be eating their leaves

The childrens behaviour on all three trips was exceptional and staff children and parent volunteers all thoroughly enjoyed themselves Photographs of the children enjoying themselves can be found on the school website under the childrens class pages wwwhubyn-yorksschuk

Sport ing success

The school has recently been awarded the Sainsbury School Gold Award one of the few schools in the county to be awarded the award The award is given to schools that provide outstanding sports provisions and extra-curricular activit ies

For the f irst t ime in many years the school football team under the tutelage of Mr Hartley have succeeded in getting through to the next stage of the County Football Finals After playing for three consecutive weeks against tough competit ion the children are one of two schools from the Easingwold Cluster to go through to the next stage of the competit ion We will keep you informed of the results
