PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, when we were just getting used to some nice warmer weather, what happens; suddenly it is back to winter. As I write this report we are having wind, showers, slushy hail, occasional glimpses of sun, just to remind us it is still winter. At least it gives me a chance to be in a nice warm office; otherwise I would rather be doing something in the outdoors. August commenced with the mid-week outing to Molong for lunch at the Freemason’s Hotel. The Orange contingent met at Cook Park in Orange to await the Bathurst members, before proceeding via The Pinnacle for morning tea at, after a few owners and name changes, is again the Mountain Tea House. After a leisurely morning tea, leisurely because I think the owners were overwhelmed when almost 40 people arrived at once in addition to the existing patrons, so as can be imagined, it took a little while for orders to be delivered. A few did not chance it and waited outside chatting in the sunshine. With such a long delay, there was no time to travel via the designated route through Cudal and the Peabody Road, instead we went the most direct route via Amaroo to be in Molong in time for lunch. On arriving in Molong, we were greeted by Link and Vickie Hewson from Canowindra, and Peter and Helen Lord from Manildra. We soon made ourselves at home in the hotel for drinks, then settled into the dining room or outside garden for the delicious lunch and the usual camaraderie and socializing. As is usual for all our outings, time soon got away, and by mid-afternoon, it was time to make our way home, would you believe, without the customary visit to the Gelato shop (except for yours truly). Sunday, 21st August was the occasion on a rather cool morning for the combined outing with the Orange and District Antique Motor Club (ODAMC), ASCC members from Orange and the ODAMC arrived at the Blayney Heritage Park, to come together with the Bathurst ASCC members for an unhurried morning tea. After much camaraderie and socializing, it was time to move on, for a number at least, via a hastily mutually agreed route to

Tallwood, Spring Terrace, Spring Hill, Shadforth, and the Mitchell Highway, while others may have taken a more direct route, but we all arrived for lunch at the Beekeepers Inn at Vittoria. After sampling the delicious wares on the menu, and some the local brews, it was time for more socializing and camaraderie, and in what seemed no time at all, to be homeward bound. All agreed it was a great day, thanks to organiser Mick Buckler, who unfortunately could not be with us due to other commitments. Those ASCC members attending the lunch; Frank

and Noni Bayada, Mustang; Peter and Rosemarie Amos, Rugby; Roy and Sheila Riley, Capri, Kevin and Annette Neville, Capri; Chris and Merran Olson, Doretti; Charles Stammers, Mercedes; Neil Barlow, Kia Coupe; Ralph and Will Arnison, Lancia; and Bruno Marinovic, BMW Z3. By the time you receive this Newsletter, those attending the All British Day would have returned from the overnight trip to Penrith, the dinner cruise on the Nepean River, and the visit to the All British Day at the Kings School in Parramatta. Unfortunately, editorial deadlines prevented a report, so that will have to wait until the October Newsletter. As listed in the events section, September starts off on Thursday, 8th with the outing to the Wolgan Valley, previously postponed because of the inclement wet weather. Let’s hope the weather will be better this time as the scenery in the Valley is absolutely spectacular. More details are inside. For those interested, the Renault 4CV Register will be having a muster in Bathurst from Thursday, 15 th to Sunday the 18th. There will be a display of the cars outside the Bathurst Court House for 3 hours on the Saturday morning, when the street will be closed. The Renault Muster will be followed on the following Sunday with a trip to the Blue Mountains, again this should be an interesting outing, and an opportunity to catch up with some of our Sydney members. And to save the best to last, beginning Friday, 21st October, we have the Spring Tour covering Lakes Entrance, Great Ocean Road, and The Grampians in Victoria. If you have not expressed your interest to Mick, I’m afraid it is now too late, as he needed numbers by 27th August to arrange accommodation, etc.

Keep Warm, Drive Safely and Happy and Enjoyable Motoring.

Charles

Would It Be Helpful To You To Have Reminders of our Events Through Facebook? How About Having a Venue Where We Can All Share Our Sporting Car Interests With Other

Members?

The committee are looking at setting up a Facebook Page for our ASCC or maybe even a Private Facebook Group to better serve you our members. An Events Page could give our members updated information on our Events and also other events that could be of interest to you. Also, we will be able to share with you sporting car items of interest, including photos and posts - better still if you wish, you will be able to post and share your passion for sporting cars with other members. A Facebook Page is a great venue for exchange of ideas. It also gives you the opportunity to give your Committee your feedback … and talking about feedback, it would be great to have your thoughts, for or against – just call Sharyn on 6361.8443 or 0418.961533; email mailto:[email protected]

August, Thursday 11th – Mid Week Meander to Molong for lunch (Report by Peter Harper)

The August mid-week run was notable for the near record number of members who turned out. I had booked about twenty five into the Canobolas Tea House but the staff was somewhat overwhelmed when forty four arrived which resulted in morning tea taking considerably longer than I had planned. As a consequence the run to Molong for lunch at the Freemasons hotel was changed to the shorter but very scenic route through Borenore and Amaroo. At the hotel we were joined by local MGA driver Cameron Wild, Helen and Peter Lord from Manildra and Alan Mitchell’s cousin Margaret which made the total number up to forty eight which the staff handled with ease. Members attending were: Ralph Arnison, Lancia Fulvia; Max Preen, Porsche 914; Ian and Michelle Wallace, Mazda MX5; Peter and Rosemarie Amos, MGB; Chris and Merran Olson, MX5; Doug and Dearne Witherdon, Datsun 240Z; President Charles Stammers, Mercedes SLK 350; Richard Gardoll, Volvo 1800E; Kevin and Annette Neville, Ford Capri; Kerry and Narelle Farrelly, MGC; Rod and Leonie Wykes, MGBGT; Stewart and Kerri Blowes, Stag; Linc and Vicki Hewson, Capri; Marg Donohoe, Mercedes; Graham and Kerry Denney, MGB; Jim and Ginny Mather, Jaguar Sovereign; Bono Marinovic, BMW Z3; Tim Cox and John Townsend, Ford Capri; Doug and Sue Coates, Jaguar XJ8; John and son Matthew Hawkey, BMW M5; Ken Howarth, Mini Cooper S; Alan Mitchell, Triumph TR4; Peter Moras and Alan Evers, MGBGT; Cameron Wild, MGA; Peter and Helen Lord, Datsun 280Z; Peter and Diann Harper, MGCGT.

Miss USA – 1964 - THE CORVETTE STINGRAY This would be one of the best looking cars to come of the USA during the early sixties. Vital statistics for the 1964 Model are: 327 cubic inch, small block 327 cubic inch Chevrolet engine. It is equipped with a four barrel Rochester carburettor putting out 290bhp and enough torque to pull a plough. The drive drain is a 4 speed Muncie manual transmission. This convertible is a sight to behold; however the dovetail coupe is also right up there in the beauty stakes. Similar to the E Type Jaguar, the Coupe is the better performer with the least amount of wind drag. Convertibles are the more appealing, of the two models, to the collectors.

Corvettes have glass fibre bodies, so rust isn’t an issue and that makes repairs a lot easier. All panels are readily available from the US. The body is bolted to a steel chassis and that’s where you need to check for rust, up on a hoist, on these aging cars. The 1963 version has a split rear window in the coupe, with the 64 model changed to a single rear window for better visibility. Most mechanical parts are readily available, at a reasonable price. The cockpit is fairly compact and head clearances are tight if you’re in the coupe and over 6 feet tall. Like most muscle cars it’s heavy to drive and made for the open road rather than a city commuter. Because of the high torque engine, gear changes aren’t that frequent. You will need around $100,000 to get into one of these great mid 1960’s cars. ref: Australian Classic Sports Car March 2003
