BURNIE BRAE Newsletter • ISSUE 3: April 2017

With so many of our clients approaching or recently beginning their retirement, questions about how to adapt portfolios from ‘money going in’ to ‘money coming out’ are very common. There are many things to consider, but we like to start with 3 concepts, they are: Liquidity, Rebalancing & Longevity.

LiquidityLiquidity refers to the fact that you’re going to need money to live off & you need to make sure you have either sufficient cash on hand or investments that are easily sold to fund your living expenses.

If you’ve been a strong contributor to your retirement savings, your portfolio might generate enough free cashflow to sustain your needs, but unfortunately with many competing priorities for our money (pay off the house, educate the kids, keep the car up to date, etc.) many people are in a position where retirement income will come from a combination of investment earnings & the sale of assets. Working out which assets to keep & sell & when to sell is a major component of the advice we provide.

RebalancingRebalancing means shifting the weighting of your money between different asset classes. You’re likely to be retired for more than 20 years & in that time you’ll see good & bad investment markets. As you draw down on your funds we need to pay attention to where that money is coming from. Every now and then we’ll recommend a rebalance & our buy & sell recommendations; this depends on the prevailing market conditions. We don’t want you selling a growth asset at a low point & buying it back at a high point. Rebalancing is a key part of the advice process, so if you haven’t considered a rebalance for a little while please be sure to get in contact to book a review.

LongevityWe spend so much time considering the risk of losing money when in reality the bigger risk is not making enough in the first place. Logically, the more money you retire with, the more you can safely drawdown to fund your living expenses. “Safe” drawdown rates depend on market performance, but based on historical analysis, a 4% drawdown rate provides a reasonable chance of not running out of money.

Many people reading this are going to say that 4% is simply not enough to live on, if you’re one of them, first of all make sure you also consider your eligibility for the age pension, and secondly give us a call & we can discuss some strategies aimed at extending the life of your money.

If you need some help with the above (or any other financial planning matters), I am happy to help. That could be initially via a brief chat, by phoning me at our Aspley office (3863 6300), or else feel free to email me ([email protected]), or at (www.aspiresrs.com.au). When you contact me, let me know if you would like to receive our dedicated Aspire SRS quarterly newsletter.

Let’s get Healthy!!

Genes dictate only 20% of longevity. Lifestyle and environment account for the rest. Five areas of the world have found to have the longest life expectancy and lowest rates of chronic disease and age-related diseases. These 5 areas are known as the Blue Zones. Let’s look at what people in these areas do:

Keep Active People living in the Blue Zones lead an active lifestyle by incorporating physical activity into their daily lives. Exercise is great, but even simple tasks such as walking to the shops instead of driving can be beneficial!

Healthy Eating Even though they are nowhere close to each other geographically, one thing that all the Blue Zones have in common is a largely plant-based diet. With each culture different among the Blue Zones themselves, you’ll be surprised at the variety of dishes that can be produced using the same food or ingredient!

Afternoon naps Characteristic of the people living in Ikaria, Greece. Shops are closed in the afternoon for naps, and this practice is believed to reduce the risks of heart disease.

‘Hara Hachi Bu’ means ‘eat until you are 80% full’ in Japanese. This practice of mindful eating which is characteristic of Japanese in the Okinawa Blue Zone prevents overeating.

Social networks Three, sometimes even four generations living together under one roof? That is very common in the Blue Zones, where strong social networks exist among people. In Okinawa, children are put into social groups called ‘moai’, and relationships within a moai last a lifetime.

Living in the Blue Zones - looking at healthy lifestyles

A high legume intake is the greatest dietary predictor of longevity. Just half a cup of cooked beans eaten daily can lower your risk of dying prematurely by about 50%! Legumes have the lowest Glycaemic Index (GI), are anti-inflammatory and high in fibre and iron. They can be used as a great substitute for red meat in Spaghetti Bolognaise!

Soy is considered a legume as well. On top of all the nutritional benefits that you can get from consuming legumes, soy products such as edamame beans, soymilk and tofu can help reduce your risks of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.Tofu has a bland taste but it will take on the flavours used in cooking – that means you can have it savoury in a stir-fry or blend it up with berries as a sweet mousse!

BLUE ZONES-INSPIRED DIET - (CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE)

Nuts pack a punch of nutritional benefits in just one small handful, from lowering your cholesterol to reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Being high in healthy fat, they are also low on the GI scale. Eat them as a snack or add them to your cereals for more crunch! Natural nut butters made from 100% nuts (peanut, almond or cashew, etc.) are a fantastic way of including nuts in your diet as well.

Extra virgin olive oil is anti-inflammatory and besides helping to control your blood sugar levels, it also reduces your risk of heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Just two tablespoons daily also lowers your blood pressure. The high antioxidant and Vitamin E content of extra virgin olive oil also allows you to cook, bake and grill with it safely. Of course, they are also great to include in salads!

NUTS

HERBS & SPICESHerbs and spices such as turmeric, cinnamon and oregano are packed with antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Just one gram of herbs have the same amount of antioxidants as 75g of vegetables! With the positive effect on improving blood sugar levels, these also help to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. You can spice up your foods by adding turmeric to rice, cinnamon to oats or yoghurt, and oregano in salads and pasta.

YOGHURTYogurt is a very versatile food and can be eaten sweet or savoury (think Indian cuisine and tzatziki!) Nutritionally, yoghurt is high in calcium which is protective against osteoporosis. Its high protein content also helps you to feel fuller for longer, thus preventing weight gain. Consuming yoghurt can also lower your blood pressure, and just one small tub of yoghurt per day can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes by 40%!
