Leadership 2011 – As Dr. Carroll has indicated we have been in process of selecting our student leaders for 2011. Congratulations to College Captain: Giles Beveridge and College Vice Captains: Aaron Hogg, James Kelly and Liam Polkinghorne on their selection as College Leaders. I have been very impressed with the manner in which the Year 11 students have entered into the leadership process. The strong alignment between staff and student voting indicates the students are focused on the correct attributes required in the process. The process for the selection of House Leaders began today and we will announce the leaders next week. All Year 11 students will attend a compulsory Leadership Retreat from Monday, 25 October, to Tuesday, 26 October. A House planning day has been set aside for Wednesday 27 October. A letter has been sent home this week with all relevant information. Please note the departure time of 7.15am on the Monday and the return time of 4.00pm on the Tuesday. This is due to the change of venue. Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 ORIENTATION EVENING (postponed due to the inclement weather conditions) will be held next Monday evening 18 October. This is the first official function for over 160

families new to St Patrick’s and hence a very important occasion in our College calendar. All current Year 11 students are invited to attend to assist with the orientation of the younger students. Current Year 6 and 7 students are NOT required to attend the evening. We also need parents to assist with the evening and I ask any parent who is able to help to contact Mrs. Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office (3631 9070). Green and Gold Day Friday, 22 October - Green and Gold Days are an opportunity to not wear school uniform to school. It is an opportunity to wear the school colours of green and gold, and is not a free dress day. Students may wear- Clothing that is predominately green and /or gold Plain blue denim shorts or jeans St Patrick’s jerseys/ Team T-Shirts Sandshoes Any clothing with the St Patrick’s logo

Students must not wear- Clothing that is not predominately green and /or gold Thongs / pluggers / sandals

Normal hair and grooming guidelines apply. Students who have workshop classes on that day must bring their black leather school shoes for these classes. Showcase – Next Friday (22 October) is the culmination of our Interhouse Competition with the House Choir Competition being held in the Callan Centre. Many hours of work have been put into the House Choirs and I am looking forward to seeing the final product from each House. This result will have a huge impact on the overall House Champions for 2009 House Transfers- Students who are forming the new Houses for 2011 are requested to go to the uniform shop over the next few weeks to indicate what size sport shirt they will required for 2011. This will help Mrs Bowden in her ordering of appropriate shirt sizes for 2011. Graduation Dinner– A reminder that the payment for the Graduation Dinner is due by Monday 25 October. Also could you please ensure that your son sees Mrs Fowlie to organise your table.

STUDIES

As I indicated in last week’s Calling article, all students in years 7-9 at St. Patrick’s College will be issued with a netbook computer at the beginning of 2011. This is in response to Federal Government funding allocated to schools across Australia to provide greater and freer access to technology. Combined with the issuing of the netbook is a significant Curriculum restructuring from next year. Directly relevant to the laptop program is the creation of the position of “Curriculum Leader—Blended Learning”. This role will be taken by Mr Matthew Seers, who is an old boy of the College (Senior 1988) and who has had many years of experience teaching at John Paul College and more recently Redlands Secondary College. The role of “Curriculum Leader—Blended Learning” is a vital one in terms of the implementation of the 1 to 1 laptop program. There is very little point in providing students with the computer then

leaving both students and subject teachers to work out how it can be used. Consequently, it was felt that for the program to be successful it was important that a position was created so that carefully structured units incorporating the use of technology could be constructed. This will be the role of Mr Seers. Whilst the role of “Curriculum Leader—Blended Learning” encompasses years 5-12, in the first instance he will focus on students in the Middle Phase of schooling. This is particularly relevant in the core subject areas of Religion, English, Sose, Maths and Science. That is not to say that the computers may not be used in other areas but the five subjects above are those best positioned to allow for implementation into units across the three year levels. This is an exciting time for Curriculum development at the College. With the explosion in technology in recent times,

resulting in a huge amount of online teaching aids and resources available, we are perfectly positioned to produce units of study which are not only up to date but “Cutting Edge”. In next week’s article I will speak about some of the other Curriculum Leader positions created as a result of this years curriculum restructure. Finally this week, a notice to all parents of boys in years 11 and 12 who undertake the subject Work Environment. A mandatory part of this course is the requirement for students to attend work placement on a Wednesday. Before attending parents must sign a workplace agreement form (WEA). There are still a number of forms not returned. If parents have not yet seen such a form could they please contact Ms Moody at the College on 3631 9065.

“Gather ‘round people, let me tell you a story,” sings Paul Kelly in the famous song he co-wrote with Indigenous singer/songwriter, Kev Carmody. The song, of course, is “From Little Things, Big Things Grow”, and indeed, Kelly and Carmody do go on to tell a simple yet powerful story of the courageous and determined Vincent Lingiarri who managed to change the landscape in more ways than one for Indigenous Australians. On Monday night of this week, I was privileged to attend an extended interview with Paul Kelly, organised by The Avid Reader bookshop in West End, where the audience was treated to something quite special. Paul Kelly spoke, read from his new book, an autobiography with a musical twist, and of course, played some songs, culminating in a magic rendition of the aforementioned tune, joined by the aforementioned co-writer, Kev Carmody. Having played in a band which frequently butchered many a Paul Kelly

song, I admit to feeling somewhat nostalgic about his music. So, I ask myself, why do I and so many others feel somehow connected to his songs? Sure, many of his songs are catchy and clever (think “Dumb Things” or “To Her Door”), but more so, I believe we are drawn by his authenticity, his ability to capture the simple yet sacred nature of our lives, and indeed our humanity. To those parents among you who have relinquished your ipods in recent times and succumbed to listening to Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber, do yourselves a favour and give Paul Kelly’s “Deeper Water” or “When I First Met Your Ma” a spin again. To the students who have no idea what I’m talking about, discover the poetry and stories of one of, if not our country’s best ever singer/songwriter. Blessed Edmund Rice once wrote, “Have courage; the good seed will grow in the children’s hearts later on.” Whenever I read or hear this line, I often can’t help

but think of Paul Kelly, Kev Carmody and Vincent Lingiarri. From the little seed, something good does grow large in the hearts of our young people, but at times, like Vincent, we do need courage and determination. This concept of growth is central to what we do at St Patrick’s, and it will form the basis for our Celebration of Excellence Evening on Friday November 5. Speaking of courage, determination and of great Australians, this Sunday sees a very significant event take place in the history of our country, and in our Catholic faith – the canonisation of our first Australian Saint, Mary MacKillop. Having celebrated this event today at a College Mass, I encourage everyone in our community to watch on Sunday as Mary MacKillop becomes Saint Mary.

WATER POLO CO-ORDINATOR—TIM WALKER

Unfortunately due to the weather on Monday and our AIC Track and Field Day on Wednesday, Water Polo trainings were can-celled this week. Our first round is against Padua College next week. A water polo season handbook will be given to the boys at training next week. Game times are as follows:

We are a little short in some age groups this year, particularly the U15 and U16. These teams would appreciate if players in younger age groups were able to stay and fill in on the night. Transport A bus will operate to Padua on Wednesday afternoon leaving the College at 3.15pm. Private transport will be required home from Padua College. If there are any issues with transport please contact me and I can put you in contact with another family who lives in your area. Uniform & Equipment Many of the boys placed an order this week for a Water Polo team t-shirt. These shirts will this week and will be able to be col-lected from the uniform shop for$15. Many boys are still training in PE shorts. While this is fine for training, boys need to make sure they have purchased either a pair of Speedos or skins style tight fitting swimwear. SPC Speedos can be purchased for $45 and skins for $70. While it is not compul-sory, it is preferred that boys wear the College Swimwear. It is also recommended that boys wear a mouthguard for games. The uniform shop is open at the following times:

SWIMMING CO-ORDINATOR—SHANE BOWDEN

St. Patrick’s Swimming in Season 2010/2011

Greetings all. As mentioned in last week’s Calling, swimming is back in Week 3 of this term with a number of new, exciting initia-tives to improve the swimming of all who would like to get involved. First, the College has begun its association with Ken Wood and the Ken Wood Swim School at Redcliffe. Ken is one of the most highly regarded swim coaches in world swimming having coached on over 30 Australian teams. His swimmers over the past 10 years have included Jessica Schipper, Geoff Huegill, Leisel Jones, Melissa Gorman and recent Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Kylie Palmer. We will be training with Ken and his elite coaches twice a week over the course of this term and Term 1 next year. Ken will be speaking to the boys at regular intervals about what it takes to become a champion, and the large amount of swimming expertise he has accumulated over the last 30 years. Ken will also have a hand in writing the swimming program for our swimmers and providing input on how to get the most out of each swimmer. With Ken’s expertise on board, now is the perfect time to become involved and get the most out of your swimming! Swimming times for Term 4 starting Tuesday October 19 are as follows: TUESDAY (SANDGATE POOL): 6:15am – 7:30am WEDNESDAY (REDCLIFFE POOL): 6:15am – 7:30am THURSDAY (REDCLIFFE POOL): 3:45pm – 5:00pm There will be buses to take the boys to school after morning training and a bus take the boys to Thursday afternoon training at Redcliffe. ‘GROWING GORGEOUS BOYS INTO GOOD MEN.’

St Patrick’s College invites you to a talk by social commentator CELIA LASHLIE. Celia Lashlie, author of ‘He’ll Be Ok -Growing Gorgeous Young Boys Into Good Men’, will give a talk at St Patrick’s College on 26 October. With 15 years experience working in the prison services of New Zealand, Celia undertook the ‘GOOD MAN PRO-JECT’ with 25 boys schools throughout NZ- a project aimed at creating a working definition of what makes a good man in the 21st century. The result was a significant insight into the minds of teenage boys and what they are feeling in this period of their lives. Celia is an inspirational speaker and provides challenging suggestions and plenty of practical and reassuring ad-vice for parents. You will be left with much food for thought on how to help your sons along the road to becom-ing good men. All parents will find something valuable in this talk regardless of whether you have sons or not.

Below is a letter from Dr Wayne Tinsey, the Executive Director of Edmund Rice Education in Melbourne:

To All Members of the College Community As you will hopefully be aware, some three years ago the Christian Brothers initiated Edmund Rice Education Australia to continue their mission in Catholic education. Terrace belongs to this national network of schools charged by the Brothers to continue Catholic Education in Australia inspired by the vision of their founder Blessed Edmund Rice. This network currently consists of some 40 schools in most states of Australia serving very diverse communities. To support the continuation of the mission and the common identity of their network of schools into the future, the Brothers have asked that all schools contribute to the administration costs for the network, support some common fund for growth and sustainability of the mission and contribute to co-responsibility amongst our schools. Co-responsibility, a core value for Edmund Rice education, is central to who we are as a family. As in all families, those who can, support those who are struggling and all contribute according to their possibility and receive according to their need. In our name, Edmund Rice Education Australia is involved in numerous educational outreaches to support disadvantaged young people in our country and at times, even our well-established schools need support. We would hope that you would see our contribution to this co-responsibility as a source of pride since it readily defines who we are and how we embrace the Christian vision for justice and equity among people. Currently the fact that part of your school fee dollar may go to support the possibility of Catholic education for disadvantaged young people both at Terrace and within the network, is something that we hope you would both affirm and celebrate. This College contributes .6 of 1% of its total income (excluding capital grants) to this national fund for co-responsibility in the Edmund Rice schools network. The Brothers, Terrace and Edmund Rice Education Australia acknowledge the sacrifices that parents make to send their children to our schools. The commitment that we make to you is to be fully transparent in regard to this contribution and to scrutinise costs with rigour to ensure that schools are only asked to contribute what is needed to sustain the future of the network. Currently this college contributes 2.35 percent of its total income, excluding capital grants to the administration, growth and sustainability of the network. This is additional to the .6 of 1% for co-responsibility. We provide this information to you in the spirit of transparency and accountability. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact Mr Peter Chapman, or the National Office of Edmund Rice Education Australia in Melbourne.
