PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Showcase At the time of writing, we are about half way through the series and as always the quality and commitment of all involved is outstanding. It was wonderful to see so many of our new Year 11 and Year 7 students performing so well. Their welcome addition to our talented student population is clear for all to see. An added bonus this semester was the inclusion of some eclectic visual arts works through the Years 8 and 11 Installation Exhibition. What I enjoy, as an audience member, is witnessing the looks of excitement and pride on our students’ faces as they perform. It is the best advertisement for what we do. It is not too late for you to share in the excitement and pride because concerts continue until Tuesday 21st June here at school. And a reminder that our final dance concert will take place on Saturday 25th of June at the Seymour Centre. Special congratulations go to our Technical Company for their tireless and outstanding contribution. Auditions Immediately following our showcase season we will be conducting our annual enrolment auditions for entry into Years 7 and 11 for 2017. This is a huge undertaking with over 800 auditions places to be allocated over 8 audition days. Thanks to everyone involved and we look forward to selecting another outstanding group of new students. China Tour Early next term 21 students and staff will travel to Beijing and Dalian after again being invited by the Beijing Foreign Affairs department to perform in a television concert on their national children’s network. Students attending are Year 8 members of Dance Companies, and a small group of our talented Year 8 musicians. I know they are looking forward to a wonderful cultural and performance experience. Student Achievements. Congratulations to Year 12 student Scott McDougall who has progressed to the finals of the 2016 Sutherland Shire and St George Youth Music Awards to be held on Friday July 1 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased by phone 95288294. Well done also to our students Magnolia Minton Sparke and Allegra Monk (Year11), Amelia Caley (Year 12), Stella Olive (Year 8) and Alex Nicolson (Year 7) who last month performed at the charity event “Support Act”. Our students performed with Julia Stone as part of the event which acknowledged Paul Kelly’s outstanding services to the music community.

Reports By the end of term all students will have received their mid year reports. Year 11 students will receive their reports and attend interviews with a member of staff to discuss their progress on Monday 20 June. These interviews are designed to help students achieve their school and post school goals and give them advice and support in dealing with the requirements and stresses involved with senior schooling. Junior reports will be posted home before the end of term. Any issues arising from your child’s report should be addressed to the relevant Year Adviser, Head Teacher or Deputy Principal. Thank you again for your support this term. I hope you and your children enjoy their up-coming holiday. Classes start back on Tuesday 19 July. I will be taking leave in term 3 travelling throughout Europe. Peter Shields will once again relieve as Principal. Kirk Thomas will relieve as Deputy Principal and Jane Garnsey as Head Teacher English. I look forward to returning in time to enjoy our Year 12 Graduation celebrations.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT Year 11 and 12 Semester 1 Reporting The half-way point of term 2 has quickly approached and we are into our semester one reporting period. All Year 12 students have been issued with their half yearly course reports and discussed their progress with their curriculum advisers during meetings on Wednesday 25th May. Year 11 students are next to meet with their curriculum advisors, with their reports issued on Monday 20th June. Year 7 -10 Semester 1 Reporting All Year 7-10 reports will be sent home to parents by the end of term in Week 10. Just a reminder, that all junior report subjects are graded from A-E with individual teacher comments for each subject. If parents/carers have any questions regarding the reports once they have been sent home, please contact the Head Teacher responsible for that subject for clarification. Year 9 & 10 Goal Setting program As part of the Goal setting program, Year 9 and 10 students will have their end of term coaching session on Monday 27th June and Tuesday 28th June respectively. Students will meet with their coaches to evaluate and reflect on their short-term (Semester 1) and long-term (year long) goals. At the start of the year students undertook the VIA character strength survey to determine their personal strengths. The students then set a short-term and a long-term goal that was aligned with their personal values and strengths and through coaching conversations with their coaches they developed a path to achieve those goals. Achieving their goals will give them a sense of accomplishment. As part of the process students will also go through their Semester 1 reports with their coaches. Uniform A reminder to parents that it is most important our students are prepared for the colder weather and are appropriately dressed in full school uniform. This school has high uniform standards and it is an expectation that all students wear our school uniform, including school jumpers, jackets and coats as well as black, fully enclosed leather shoes to comply with Work Health and Safety requirements. The Uniform Shop stocks all items of our uniform except shoes. If there is a genuine reason for your child to be out of uniform, please write a note explaining the situation and encourage them to submit the note to the office at 8.30am where they will be granted a uniform pass. If your child has lost items of uniform please contact lost property in the Office. The Uniform Shop is open every Thursday from 8.30am. The complete list of uniform items is included in the newsletter for your information. Showcase Over the past few weeks our semester one showcase season has been underway. Again the quality and standard of each of the evening performances has been outstanding. We would like to recognise the commitment and professionalism of our performing arts staff who continue to work so tirelessly at this time of year to ensure our students have such performance opportunities. We would like to recognise and thank our P&C who offer continued support during the showcase season by running the front of house and would like to acknowledge the work of Ms Aynsley and the Year 9 showcase hospitality class who also catered for the showcase season so professionally. The technical crew under the leadership of David Ferguson also deserves to be recognised for their work behind the scenes each day and night to maintain a very professional production. It was also great to watch the Year 9 showcase elective students perform as part of the program, well done to these students and the staff who have created and delivered these innovative courses.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT Continued... The semester one showcase season concludes with the Dance Showcase Concert at the Seymour Centre on Saturday 25th June at 7:30pm. If you have not yet attended a showcase concert, we strongly recommend that you experience the quality performing arts co-curricula program, so proudly provided at this unique public school. Tickets for the school based concerts are available via the schools website and tickets for the Dance showcase are available via the Seymour Centre Box Office. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is a joint state and federal government initiative. The Data Collection is an annual national count of the number of students provided with educational adjustments as a result of their disability as defined broadly under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and reinforces the obligations that schools have towards students under the Disability Standards for Education 2005. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability will provide Australian schools, parents, education authorities and the community with information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the adjustments they receive. The NCCD involves collection of numbers only, no names are submitted. An information sheet will be mailed home to parents of students with disabilities over the next week. Please read this information carefully before making the decision to opt out of the data collection. Parents/Guardians wishing their student’s details not be included in the NCCD collection are to advise the school in writing by 1st August 2016. Subject Selection Information Evenings Early next term the school begins the process of hosting a series of information evenings where vital information regarding subject choices for 2017 is explained. This is a very important time for students in years 7, 8, 10 and 11 and their parents as they are about to make some very important curriculum choices. At this stage, we only recommend that students reflect on their strengths, abilities and subject interests and make informed choices based around these considerations. The Year 8 into 9 information evening will be held at 5pm on Tuesday 26th July. The Year 11 into 12 Subject Information evening will be held on Tuesday 2nd August from 5pm. The Year 10 into 11 Subject Information evening will be held on Wednesday 10th August from 5pm. These forums are the opportunity for parents, carers and students to receive information about courses offered at the school for next year. There is no year 7 to year 8 information evening however an information booklet for Year 8 elective courses will be provided to students and parents. It is important students make informed and correct choices initially, as these choices determine the nature and number of classes that will operate within the 2017 timetable. As always, there will be limited opportunities for students to change courses, reinforcing the importance of getting the selections right from the outset. Year 10 Work Experience During the final week of this term our Year 10 students will be undertaking their work experience. This is always an exciting time for the students as they have a taste of working life in a chosen vocation that interests them. The timing is also perfect as it allows for students to start thinking about what would be the most appropriate subject choices for 2017 to support their future career options. Most of the students have secured appropriate placements and have returned their completed paperwork to Ms George. However if any student has yet to finalise either their placement or paperwork, it is imperative that they see Ms George well before Week 8.

Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations The trial HSC commences for our students Week 1 next term. The examination timetable is being finalised and will be distributed to students this month, along with information regarding appropriate HSC exam procedures and protocols. It is important that students become familiar with the timetable and start their preparation for these exams as soon as possible to ensure they feel confident. We wish our Year 12 students all the best as they prepare for these vital exams and remind them to follow the illness/misadventure policy and procedures if necessary over the examination period. After School Study Centre A reminder for all members of the school community that the afterschool study centre is available on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon in the Library; this is a very useful resource that could further support the students in their preparation and revision of assessment tasks and examinations. Application for leave May we also remind parents that if you wish your child to apply for extended leave, the Application for Extended Leave form, found on our school website, is to be completed and submitted to the Principal along with copies of travel documentation. For leave less than 20 school days, written notification is required to be sent to the relevant Deputy Principal. SORRY DAY & RECONCILIATION WEEK

The 26th May marked Sorry Day at NHSPA, for which we held a special assembly to commemorate the stolen generation. It was a great honour to have Mr Phillip Kahn hold a smoking ceremony amongst our students and Mr Wayne Anthony Carr conducted a powerful and moving speech. The ceremony was opened with an acknowledgement of country by two of our senior Indigenous students. Set amongst a cold and overcast morning this sombre and powerfully reflective assembly gave our school community a chance to think deeply about what it means to be impacted so profoundly negatively by gov-ernment policy. The day also led us into Reconciliation week and Mr Carr implored our school community to think deeply about how we can make changes in Australia to aide reconciliation between Indigenous and non Indige-nous Australians. Throughout the week we had film screenings in the Library where we played short films relating to Reconciliation, including an award winning short film Ngurrumbang by ex NHSPA student Alex Ryan.

As we enter the second half of the term, the pace has become frenetic in the English department. Report writing, marking, preparation for assessment tasks and planning for Term 3 has kept us all very busy and working conscientiously. On top of this, Debating and Public Speaking has continued, along with various study days, incursions and excursions, all of which have added to the list of the many things that the wonderful English staff facilitate on a daily basis. On the Debating front, we have had numerous successes. Our Years 9 and 10 teams were victorious against Randwick Girls High School. Our senior teams were undefeated until a recent debate against Sydney Girls High School. Our Years 7 and 8 teams were also victorious against South Sydney High School last week. Several weeks ago, two of our senior students spoke at the Plain English Public Speaking competition at SCEGGS Darlinghurst. Both students acquitted themselves with excellence. The talent of our debaters and public speakers is indeed wonderful to witness. I take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts, and I thank the debating and public speaking coaches who give of their time to organise and run debates and public speaking excursions. I am very grateful to staff and students for their hard work and fine representation of our school. On June 16th, Dr Felicity Plunkett will be working with our Year 12 Extension 1 English students on the Creative Writing component of their Extension course. She has previously worked with our Year 12 Extension 2 English students on their Major Works earlier this term. On June 22nd, a quarter of our Year 12 cohort will visit UTS Broadway for the HSC English Modules Day, where they will gain invaluable information and resources for their HSC English studies. Below is a list of due dates for assessment tasks in the various years: Year 7 – Group Presentations on their Novel study, see assessment calendar for day/s in Week 8 Year 8 – Documentary Reviews, handed in during Week 6 Year 9 – Hitchcock Speeches, see assessment calendar for presentation dates in Week 9 Year 10 – Autobiographical Zines, see assessment calendar for due dates in Week 9 Year 11 – 2 unit hand in essay, Friday of Week 9 Extension 1, viewing task to be completed in class during Week 1 of Term 3 Year 12 – 2 unit Module C mini-essay to be completed in class on the Friday of Week 7 Extension 1 – nothing until the Trial HSC Examinations Extension 2 –final submission of Major Works mid term 3

SCIENCE & LOTE FACULTY Term 2 so far has been a busy one with a quick turnaround of examinations and reports. Students will have feedback outlining their strengths and areas to improve. These areas are; knowledge and understanding, science as a human endeavour, working scientifically and communication. All these strands reflect different aspects of science that students are assessed on throughout the year. With the identification of their strengths and areas of improvements, students through the SMART goal setting process will be able to set goals to target and hence improve specific areas of need.

Other happenings within the department are the preparing for Science week 2016. This is occurring August 13-21 and the theme will be “Drones Droids and Robots”. Students will have the opportunities to interact with live demonstrations, see presentations and compete in competitions. We hope to build on the success of last year and continue to make Science week a key event in our yearly calendar.

Year 10 Italian (Advanced and Beginners) Students are working through a unit of work titled ‘Made in Italy: i prodotti italiani’. They are learning key language to communicate in a shop and use the comparative/superlative structures to express their opinions about things and people in general. The intercultural outcomes include Carnevale in Venice and its popular masks and famous Italian fashion brands. Students are presently working on a new unit of work entitled ‘Il rientro’. They are learning key language to communicate in a school setting. The intercultural outcome focuses on the Italian education system and school holidays.

Year 8 and 9 Italian Students are currently completing a unit of work entitled ‘In Piazza’ in which they have learned to describe themselves and others. They will further develop their knowledge of the importance of the Italian piazza and learn about its development throughout the years. Students have also been asked to bring to class some information that interests them about current events in relation to Italian culture. They will be required to present their findings to the class for discussion. The next topic will focus on shopping and travelling in Italy. The use of ICT to reinforce key language is an engaging and effective means of making progress in the target language. Students have access to various online interactive activities and a CD pertaining to the course book which they can use at home. For your information below is a list of websites which your child can access from home.

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/italian/italian.htm

www.pearsonplaces.com.au – a hyperlink to the live Campion Website on Person Places - Formula Italian Uno

Students are encouraged to practice key language content via ICT resources as mentioned in class. Year 7 French Students are presently working on a unit of work which extends communicating personal information to addresses, nationality and languages spoken in more formal situations. The intercultural outcomes include knowledge of personal documents needed in France, the wide ethnic variety of surnames in France and public notices. Year 7 Italian Students are presently learning key language structures relating to birthday and the date. They have learned the days of the week, months and numbers up to 31 and now are able to apply this language in diverse situations. The intercultural outcomes include knowledge of some major festivals in Italy.

All Year 7 students have several CDs which are designed to support them at home. Additionally, they are encouraged to work through related interactive activities from the following website. http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/italian/italian.htm

VISUAL ART FACULTY The Visual Faculty has been in full swing with lots of art making happenings.

Installation Day! We held a whole day incursion where the 93 Year 11 students created artworks all over the school grounds. The installations / interventions into the school grounds spread from the basketball courts to the art building and beyond. The work was open for view on Monday the 6th June during the showcase season. The installations were spectacular and the entire school community supported the event with their enthusiasm and respect for the artworks in the playground.

The Year 8 John Brack inspired paintings were also on display during showcase, creating a colourful crowd of figures in the schools King St Gallery and in the playground.

Year 12 have just completed the third assessment, congratulations!

In the lead up to this assessment the students interviewed each other about their art making, and here is a fabulous interview by Clare Lou:

Artist: Riku Yamada by Clare Lou: Riku Yamada’s body of work, explores and extends a fond fascination of his own Japanese culture by encapsulating the fusion of the traditional and modern day Japan through the candid means of story-telling. His body of work consists of a storybook and two wooden sculptures – and will be submitted within the collection of works category. Enticed by his own background and the rich cultural history it has to offer, Yamada pays a sincere homage to his multifaceted culture. Yamada’s practice involves the holistic study of the traditional and modern day of Japan that is admirably translated throughout his works. Applying both the 3D and 3D visual forms, he captures a Japan that is not restricted to only one perspective. Bound by delicate rice paper, a process that may prove to be considerably tedious, with steadily written Japanese calligraphy, unfolds a fictional tale that resides in a Japanese village entitled “Human Change”. Each page is sided with a thoughtful English translation supplemented with pictures, manipulated by Photoshop, to captivate the audience through this laborious and tremendously salient body of work. The merging of both traditional Japanese calligraphy and printed ink directly encapsulates Japan’s balance of traditional and modern values. His first wooden sculpture, crafted with ply wood and steady applications of oil paint depicts the eminent Hokusai’s “Wave”.

The second sculpture, fashioned with pine wood and oil paint alike, is a diorama of a traditional Japanese village during the Edo period – containing characters within his story book. These sculptures physically lift the story that he portrays from the surface in his storybook, adding a whole new dimension to his work. Riku Yamada provides the audience multiple methods and opportunities into his culture and how it can be viewed without the limitations of only just one perspective, conveying the intricacies of Japanese culture.

DRAMA FACULTY The beginning of the drama showcase season begins this week with Tahnae Luke’s company’s performance of The Red Tree. This company comprises of year 8 and 9 students and their production is based on Shaun Tan’s beautiful book by the same name. Andrew Benson’s Year 10 accelerated company has also gained its inspiration from a lyrical work of literature. The Happy Prince is Oscar Wilde’s children’s fable and is the basis of this company’s work. Over the next few weeks we will showcase the talents of many of our Year 7 students with three companies directed by Brenton Fletcher ,Odessa Harbon and Oleg Pupovac. Odessa Harbon’s company are performing a piece that was written by NHSPA past graduate Alex Hayden. We hope that the inclusion of so many year 7 students has increased their enjoyment life at NHSPA. Anni Finsterer’s year 10 extension students have developed a production based on their intensive study of Shakespeare’s work . They have collaborated to focus on the theme of Betrayal in Shakespeare’s plays . They also will perform in this first week of drama showcase. They have already performed at The Sport For Jove regional final and are through to the next level. We also welcome back a passed graduate Ella Prince .She is a graduate of RADA and is directing our year 8 and 9 students in The City Of Lost Children. Later in the season our senior students will bring to life two vastly different but equally ambitious works. Sceats company are create the world that is a prequel to the life of Peter Pan and Hoddinott company will create the world of 1940s Australia in a condensed version of Cloudstreet. We hope you enjoy our work .We are proud of all our students.

TOP OF THE LAKE FILMING In May, 60 girls from Year 10 - 12 were on set for the day for the filming of the new series of "Top Of The Lake". This critically acclaimed mini-series is being directed by Oscar® winner Jane Campion (Bright Star, The Piano), along with new co-director Ariel Kleiman (Partisan). The girls got to experience a day of set - including to their delight - full hair and make-up and film set catering. Staff on set with them were overwhelmed with the positive feedback about our girl - some of which played featured extras roles. Crew members and cast members alike, praised the girls on their professionalism and behaviour over what was a long day on set (6am bus to set, 7pm return to school!!). We look forward to sharing with the you the date next year you can support our drama and film students and watch them on your screens! Watch this space...... We would have loved to attach the gorgeous pic of all our girls with Jane Campion....but......we are embargoed from anything til next year!!

DRAMA FACULTY

Great News for the Shakespeare Regional Carnival! Congratulations to the Year 10 Drama Extension Shakespeare Carnival players!! The group WON and have now gone through to State level in late June. It was a great night and a pleasure to have Chris Tompkinson from Sport for Jove Shakespeare Company and the competing schools here at Newtown including IGS, Sydney Firls, Santa Sabina, MLC and Presbyterian Ladies College. Newtown won their category of a ‘Shakespeare mash”. Some of the Year 10 students who were not performing worked on Front of House and were an amazing welcoming committee: so helpful and friendly. We received glowing praise in a letter from a PLC mother who said, ‘I have never been inside the gates of your school before. I was expecting fabulous and was not disappointed. The generosity of your students was only outshone by their talent and obvious love of their craft. You must be so proud of them’. Yes we are! We will keep you updated on the State Performance.

The students were:

The teams were trialed at the beginning of the year and have been preparing all year at weekly training sessions before school and during lunch. The Newtown Blue 14 boys were narrowly defeated in the quarter finals to the eventual winning team and our Newtown Red 14 girls team who were fabulously coached by Raph, Angus and Venus, made it to the finals to be narrowly defeated 2-1. They will progress to the State Championships on the 3rd of August. Each and every student should be commended on their behavior and sportsmanship on the day and in the lead up to the event. Students often need to balance a variety of commitments and at times this can be very difficult. It is a testament to the hard work they are doing and the determination they have. A very big thank you to Damian Hadley (Leo Year 8) and Mark Yates (Oliver Year 8) who have given up their time to train and coach the 14 boys teams. Training will continue throughout the year.

PD/H/PE FACULTY Continued ... OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL The open boys football team trials were held at the beginning of the year and after 2 trials and many discussions, the following players were selected for the team to compete in the CHS knockout competition and the Bligh Zone Football Gala Day:

Round 1 in term 1 saw us play at Cronulla HS were we were definitely considered the underdogs. After some excellent play from the boys, we were the eventual winners with a sneaky 1-0 win. Our next round match saw us take on Woolooware HS at home. A home ground advantage with a loud crowd helped us defeat the favourites 3-2 to the shock of the Woolooware spectators! We were then on to the 3rd round, the furthest we had made it for over 10 years. We played Kirrawee HS in the next round and were defeated by an outstanding side. The boys fought until the final whistle however the Kirrawee boys were too strong. Congratulations to the team, made up of mainly Year 12 boys who were able to enjoy playing together for the last time. Congratulations also to the junior boys in the team who contributed greatly to the success of the team and were able to build on their skills for future years. Training will continue throughout the year on Monday afternoons on the oval.

YEAR 9 JOURNALISM

BACK STAGE – MUSIC PERFORMANCES 2016 Last week on the 24 and 25 of May the opening nights of NHSPA showcase started. Many bands and musical performances were due to perform. We all had to be at school at 6 o’clock and had to be ready to perform at 7pm. Before this performance all acts had been meeting for weekly rehearsals to practice for these nights. As soon as everyone got to the school we went to C block and had a meeting with all the teachers to get allocated our classrooms and areas for the night. Examples of the bands are: SWE, Jazz Orchestra, Orchestra, Sax Quartet, Senior Choir and Senior String Ensemble. Different performances were conducted by the wonderful Ms Deborah McGowan, Mr Jason Isaac, Mr Emlyn Lewis-Jones and featuring Javiera Scarratt. We had a full house in the audience both nights and all the performances were said to have gone well. There were performers in all years from 7-12. This was year 12’s last showcase. It was an extremely successful opening night with many highs!

YEAR 9 JOURNALISM Continued ...

Review of Music Showcase Thursday, 2 of June, 2016 Held at the Studio Theatre

There were many different performances, such as Year 9’s Up In Lights production of “Legally Blonde”, senior students performing and Year 9’s songwriting class performing songs they wrote themselves. The performances were practiced, sounded great and went smoothly. The 50 minute performance of “Legally Blonde” was dramatic, bright and at some parts funny. Lots of pink was worn! Mr Miller’s Year 9 song writing class performed what they created. They recorded a few things beforehand in class to add to their live performances at showcase. A few students from Year 11 and 12 performed as well. Some people sang covers while others sang their original songs. During break food was available to the audience. It was delicious and the waiters and waitresses (people from Year 9’s hospitality class) did a fantastic job. Overall the showcase was great and the whole night was a success.

YEAR 9 JOURNALISM Continued ...

Queue Music Luther P. (31/5/16) ‘Warm up’ [personal image]

On the 31st of May, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts held an exceptional performance in the Class Dance Showcase at the Studio Theatre. From the beginning to the end, there was excitement, a lot of energy and support. Everyone performed to their very best no matter how many they did. Before the show, there was a lot of preparation done. During the term we have done numerous rehearsals, so that it would look seamless. We had rehearsed for several hours. Everyone was dedicated and committed to every rehearsal. Showcase began with the studio lights dimming and the stage lights shining bright as ever, drawing every person’s attention to the stage. The dance performances were exceptional making it irresistible not to applaud. The performances were varied from a classical ballet piece to a musical jazz piece. Most years were performing this night from year 7 to year 12 and there was a range of different styles too. Some groups did contemporary and some did ballet, even some did jazz. Overall each performer tried their hardest and performed brilliantly.
