How do you perceive the role of HR in

the growth plan of UBEL ?

Today, UBEL has been recognized as the

3rd Fastest Growing Construction

Company (small category less than

Rs. 600 crores) as per Construction World

Annual 2010 Study. The phenomenal

growth the Company has registered

during last few years amply reflects the

tough and increased role HR is playing in

coping with the demanding requirements

of manpower by the business. However,

we have “miles to go before we sleep.”

What are the new HR initiatives to

support the UBEL business plans?

We are adopting all kinds of sourcing

modes for recruiting the right person for

the right job. Also, we are aligning with

several top head hunters in the industry to

bring in passive job seekers. When the

company decided to step into EPC

business, within the shortest period of

time, we have built a very strong team of

30+ professionals from the respective

industry. We have not only built the team,

we have provided enough resources to

make it fully functional to effectively

handle any type of EPC Project.

Interview with

Mr. G. M. Bapat, Vice President – HR

Initiatives taken for people growth &

training activities

We, at HR, have a privilege of close

monitoring by Mr. JK Sardana, who in fact

suggests a lot of HR initiatives. We have

sponsored our staff for several off campus

workshops which are being conducted by

industry professionals. This has enabled

them to interact with people from other

parts of India and to understand the

current industry scenario. They have

brought back several innovative ideas /

strategies adopted by successful

companies which are being deliberated

during such workshops.

We are also conducting soft skill training

programs for our HO staff periodically.

Recently, we had organized an All Site

Accountants Meet from Head Office. We

had already started implementing SAP to

enhance our operations to global

standards. We have conducted SAP

training to our stores / accounts / MIS

personnel at sites.

The above programs would definitely

ensure our staff’s professional growth.

How do you see HR helping

upholding the spirit of UB (specially

as the employees are widely spread

out) ?

We have floated an in-house magazine by

name FACEBOOK which connects the

entire staff of UBEL across India.

Through this we regularly update on

company's business achievements, new

orders, technical milestones, new joinees

Information, JV / Diversification plans etc.

Now all UBEL employees are aware of the

company's growth and with improved

confidence they are putting their best

efforts to take things forward.

We are encouraging sports activity

among the staff and have provided

adequate facilities even outside the

campus. This constructive engagement

enables them to stay fit and at the same

time to enhance their competitive spirits.

Being a multi locational operator, we have

a perfect blend of multi cultural / multi

religious environment at sites as well as at

HO / Regional Office. We have been

organizing Annual family get together

through which employees get to know

about each other's families. This has

created a bonding and sense of

togetherness. During these events, we

recognize our employees for their efforts

at work, which motivates them to excel

further.

Any other message you would like to

give to the employees of UBEL.

HR Department is actually by way of

system in the Organization. However,

every task-holder or executive has to take

on the role of HR professional for personal

and organizational success. So, let us bind

the team with a passion for HR to achieve

common goals of the Company.

(One year old)....

It gives me immense pleasure to share with all

of you that Facebook, the Internal Magazine of

UB Engineering, has completed one year of

journey. The idea to start an internal magazine

was to keep all the employees working at

faraway places informed about the company

activities/policies etc. The magazine could also

highlight the achievement of the family

members of the employees. Facebook has

become a platform for sharing your thoughts

and achievements of family members. We

appreciate the participation from the

employees in all the four issues published.

Congratulations to the editorial team and the

employees who have contributed to this

success! ….. “Well begun is half done!” -

FACEBOOK has done that. The Editor,

Ms. N. Supriya deserves special appreciation as

she maintained the high standard and kept

employees interested in participation. Keep up

the Good Work ! I expect more and more

participation from the employees!

Climbing to the top is tough and to sustain

there is very difficult….Congratulation to the

editorial team for the good work that you have

done so far. I wish Facebook to go miles and

become no 1 magazine in the UB group.

JK Sardana

Dear Supriya,

It pleases me no end to know that our

FACEBOOK is completing One year of it's

publication. Especially, with the back-drop of

few abortive attempts for such a Newsletter, it

is quite heartening to see FACEBOOK become

such a meaningful, and yet entertaining tool to

reach out to all sections of UBEL both at Sites

and HO. A glance through editions from the

beginning till now clearly shows that the

FACEBOOK is becoming rich in contents and

handsome in it's looks. I am a witness to single

handed efforts put in by you. I compliment you

and wish that many such FACEBOOK editions

will follow and its popularity will grow by leaps

and bounds. I wish you all the best in your

Mission.

FACEBOOK is now a TODDLER!

Imagine a world where you can exchange ideas with

employees and peers without meeting face to face.

Imagine creating a new world within your company walls,

a world with windows of opportunity and progress with

every turn. Welcome once again to the world of

FACEBOOK.

While collecting and collating the information / matter for

FACE BOOK, we were amazed at the true achievement of

our company / employees / family members…...like the

vastness of our business ventures... the plethora of areas in which we have excelled,

our prestigious orders, marketing initiatives, diversifications into new businesses,

the execution of projects and challenges faced while executing them, Innovative

and creative ideas of our employees, the unusual experiences of the employees at

sites, personal as well as family members’ achievements, our clients' appreciation of

our work, our teams' relentless effort to meet customer expectations, our

management's vision and mission for the company, and so on.

FACEBOOK is now stepping into the SECOND YEAR. Working on the past four

issues has been an enriching experience for me and the editorial team. Bringing up

each issue is just like giving birth to a child, there were a lot of challenges.. pains …

yet I have enjoyed the every moment. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to

the management for the continued support and to my colleagues for their excellent

co-operation in bringing every issue of FACEBOOK successfully. The feedbacks and

contributions which we have received on FACEBOOK from across the UBEL family,

has encouraged us to plan for newer features in the magazine in the coming issues.

Let's take pride and joy in being part of the UBEL success story and pledge to

contribute in steering our organization towards greater success!

Successful completion of Projects

In spite of several hurdles, the construction of additional 400 kV & 220 kV Bays at 400/220 kV Bawana Sub-Station on turnkey basis

was successfully completed on 29th June, 2011. Congratulations to Mr. NC Pandey, Sr. Vice President and his team.

Scene 1(Pune - Mumbai)7 engineers take only 1 ticket and 7 doctors buy all 7 tickets..Doctors are desperately waiting for TC to come....

When TC arrives,All 7 Engineers get in one toilet so when TC knocks, one hand come out with the ticket and the TC goes Away.....

NOW on return Journey

All of them don’t get a direct Train to PUNE>

So they all decide to take a Passenger till Lonavala, from there they can easily get a local to PUNE.

SCENE 2(MUMBAI - LONAVALA)Doctors decided, “this time we will prove that we too

are equal...All 7 Doctors take 1 ticket, Engineers don’t buy any ticket al all!!!!

TC arrives....ALL DOCTORS IN ONE TOILET. ALL ENGINEERS IN THE OPPOSITE ONE..One engineer gets out and knocks the door of Doctors toilet,One hand comes with the tickets, he takes the ticket and comes in Engg. Bathroom....

TC DRIVES out ALL the doctors from the toilet and they are heavily fined.

SCENE 3(LONAVALA) SO now both the group r on LONAVALA station.Doctors planning their move for last change, they board the local to PUNE.

This time doctors decide that they will play the same (1 ticket) trick.

ALL Doctors take 1 ticket..Engineers buy all 7 tickets this time..

SO TC comes..All Engineers showed their tickets....Doctors are still searching for toilet in the LOCAL train.....

CONCLUSION : Technically intelligent people are geniuses, don’t mess with ENGINEERS.....

beautiful, perennially fresh and inviting,

Mahabaleshwar is blessed with spectacular

views of the valleys and forests. It's calm and

quiet atmosphere is very attractive to tourists

and makes for a cozy refuge for the sun

baked people of the plains.

This lovely hill station offers a number of

exciting activities to the tourists. Pony rides on

the lanes of Mahabaleshwar are something

to be experienced. Together with its

invigorating climatic conditions, tempting strawberry and raspberry

farms, foggy mountains, serpentine paths, the soothing numbers

played by icy cold waterfalls, the amazing views of the valley, romantic

strolls and several look out points make Mahabaleshwar a treat for the

eyes and soul.

The Accounts Team organized this trip to Mahabaleshwar to refresh

and unwind from the grinding activities of yearly closure of Accounts

and take the team to see the beauty of this place.

The team reached Mahabaleshwar at around 11:30 am to be

welcomed by fog and rain. After freshening up, we went out for

sightseeing, covering all the scenic spots. The rains could not however

dampen our spirit. Shopping and occasional satisfaction of taste buds

with warm tea and “Bhuttas”, made the trip more enjoyable. The

evening descended and the team was ready to bounce and make

merry. Cocktail dinner, games, fun, activities were part of the event

and the party went on till mid night.

Next morning, we closed our adventure trip with a visit to Pratapgarh

Fort and came back to Pune, tired and exhausted but with sweet

memories.

own email address in the To: field. No one likes to share their private email address with strangers.

The email subject should be detailed enough to give the recipient an idea about the email content

without having to open it. Single words like "Hi" or "Hello" are a strict no-no.

Do not attach large attachments in your email since not everyone is on a broadband connection.

If you have to email more than two documents as attachments, zip them in one file. Doing so would

ensure that your friend won't miss downloading any file.

Do not write an email while you are drunk or in a really bad mood. It would reflect on the style of your

Do not request a Read Notification Receipt.

Always reply to emails especially the ones specifically addressed to you. The sender is still

If you receive a company wide email, and need to reply, do not hit the Reply to All button. Everyone on

that mailing list may not want to read your reply.

your comments at the top of the mail, not the bottom.

If you are fed up with receiving the same jokes, Internet rumors, and chain letters promising free

cases of champagne, $1000 from Bill Gates, and miracle cream that erases all your fine lines and bad memories, do not send them to others.

If you've got something to say that is Highly personal or angry or shocking please do it in

person.

Use abbreviations only if you are sure that the person reading the mails understands the

abbreviations just as you do.

Courtesy: E-mail is all about communication with other people, and as usual, some basic courtesy

never goes amiss. If you are asking for something, don't forget to use the magic word please. Similarly, if someone helps you our or does you a favour, it never hurts to use the other magic word thank you.

Personal Remarks: Last but not the least, always remember that there is no such thing as a secure

mail system. It is very foolish to send very personal or sensitive information by e-mail. Remember, you are not the only person who could be embarrassed if a delicate message falls into the wrong hands..... and mind you, most of the time it does!

Some good practices and etiquettes for sending e-mail messages to and from cell phones.

1. Begin messages with a one-paragraph summary of the entire e-mail, so readers on mobile devices can get to the heart of the issue immediately.

2. Keep your message so short and to the point that opening the actual message is unnecessary.

3. If you know you're sending to a mobile phone, mark your calendar to follow up with that person soon afterward, either by e-mail or phone. Because no matter how compelling your headline or your text, there's still a good chance it might be forgotten.
