Road Safety

Reception Trip To London Zoo

Year One children have been taking part in a ‘Pedestrian Skills’ scheme. They have looked at road safety in a car park , walking around the area and crossing roads in safe places.

Reception all had a fantastic day at London Zoo. The weather held out for us and we managed to see lots of animals! We even had some of our own ‘sleeping lions’ on the journey home!

As we come to the end of the Summer term, we are already starting to plan for the start of the new term! It has been another fantastic year for the PTA and we would like to thank everyone for their help and support throughout all our events. This term KS1 had another successful ‘Film Night.’ Nursery and Reception had great fun with their ‘Easter Egg Hunt.’ We have more events planned for KS1 next term. Marion Chambers Key Stage One Chair This year KS2 have had a busy calendar. The ‘Chill Out’ evenings have been as popular as ever including some fantastic nights! Who can forget the ‘Wet Chill Out’, and of course the night that showed Berrygrove still has an amazing amount of talent. This year also included a Year 5 Sleepover which was enjoyed by all who slept in the school hall! To finish the year off, it’s the emotional time when we say ‘goodbye’ to Year 6 at the ‘Leavers Ball.’ Thank you to everyone who has helped to organise these events. Tracy Kelly Key Stage Two Vice Chair Another huge success and most enjoyable day was had when Friends of Berrygrove hosted their annual event ‘Party In The Playground!’ DJ Rob on the decks kept everyone in the mood. Mr Franklin and others got splattered in ‘splat the teacher!’ The BBQ and café kept everyone fed, and all the attractions kept us entertained. Thank you to everyone that supported and helped us make it a memorable day! We raised a total of £2,800 and it didn’t rain!!! A Message from Friends of Berrygrove

Netball

On Wednesday 19th May, the Berrygrove netball squad was fortunate enough to be invited to Queens’ School to take part in the annual Netball tournament. This was an exciting experience for all the squad; sadly we weren’t entirely successful, though we were proud to be able to participate. The ‘B’ team went to Queens’ in the morning and the ‘A’ team went in the afternoon. When we arrived we had to find a space in the shade and then we had to warm up so that we were prepared for the tornado of games we were about to play! Our first game was against Bournehall, we won that by 8-0, this was a great confidence boost for us! We played several matches in between the first and the last game; sadly we lost the majority of them but this did not dampen our Confidence. We all knew we had to win the next match to even start thinking about the final! Out last game was against Laurence Haines, we tried our hardest but they were too good for us, we lost by quite a lot of nets, but we left this magnificent morning behind, knowing that we tried our hardest and that participating was worth more than the trophy this year. Sport at Berrygrove Year Two Trip To Shoeburyness

Year Two enjoyed a visit to Shoeburyness near Southend on 8th June. The children have learnt about the seaside in the past in History and Geography lessons this term. They paddled in the sea, made sandcastles and ate ice cream!

Summer Music Evening

Congratulations and thank you to all the children who took part in our recent Summer Music Evening. This year was bigger than ever with fantastic performances from guitarists, violinists, cornet players, pianists, Year Five singers and the choir. Everyone worked so hard in the run up to the concert and it was great to hear so much lovely music.

Year Three Picnic

As part of a Design and Technology project, Year Three have been designing packaging and sandwiches. Unfortunately, a planned picnic had to be postponed due to weather conditions, however, on Friday 25th June Year Three made their sandwiches and we had our picnic and games in the park. Many thanks to the following parents who gave up their time to help out; Mrs Ganesh, Mrs Yadala, Mrs McAllister, and Mrs Cavallari as well as Mr Clancy who entertained the children with rugby rounders.

Year Five Visit To The Building Site

Year Five pupils learned all about brick laying, when they went to visit the local building site. Everyone had a go, using a trowel and each group made a brick wall. In order to be safe, we were all wearing hard hats and reflective jackets. Everyone got to sit in a special fork-lift, which extends 17 metres up. The children had lots of fun, it was a great experience, some asked for a job, but were told they were too young!

Year Six Trip To Windsor

On the 14th June 2010 some of Year Six was honoured to find out that they were invited to The Order of the Garter! This came with HUGE excitement for those twenty six extremely fortunate children along with Mr. Kronda, Mrs Ashton, Mrs Newing and Mrs Kempster. We were all very excited on the morning of the Windsor trip. First we were called to the large hall to talk about the arrangements for the day. There were two mini buses and we were split into two groups of thirteen children in each. It was a long drive from Garston to Windsor and the children had to entertain themselves with books and word-searches. We were told we would have to do a lot of entertaining ourselves because we had a long wait until the precession started! When we arrived there was a massive ferris wheel. We walked to Windsor Castle and waited in a long queue. When we entered the castle we had to go through an important security check. We walked along the path until we found a big enough space to fit all twenty six of us plus the teachers! We had to wait for two hours for the procession to start, that’s a long time! When the procession started some of us were very close to the Royal Family including The Queen and Prince William! This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we were honoured that we were able to attend it. When the procession had finished we had to wait some more then when the ceremony had finished the Royal Family came back by horse drawn open carriage. Then after they had left we gathered our things and left for home! This was an exciting experience for everyone and we will remember it for the rest of our lives!

Sport at Berrygrove

Cricket

Year 5 and 6 have recently taken part in a cricket tournament against Highwood and Fairfield teams 1 and 2. It was the first time the team of boys and girls had played in a tournament. Although Berrygrove did not win, we came third, a good time was had by all and rain did not stop play! The team were a credit to themselves and to Berrygrove. Special thanks to the parents who came along to give their support, it was very much appreciated.

Outdoor Athletics Tournament

Year Five and Year Six represented Berrygrove at Athletics on 17th June. They participated in a range of out door Athletic activities, both track and field events. It was a very hot sunny day so the children did really well to finish in a respectable 2nd place. Well done to all the children who took part.

Tag Rugby Finals

On a very hot summers day the Rugby team went to Old Albanian’s which is the Saracen’s training ground, for the County finals against 46 other teams. We played 4 games and had one bye, but unfortunately lost 3 and drew one! It was, however a great fun way to end the season!

Year Five Sleepover

The Year Five sleepover, actually should be re-named, the Year Five lack of sleepover, because everyone was so excited, that they didn’t want to sleep. The evening started playing games, followed by pizza and trying to build houses out of Spaghetti and marshmallows. Everyone got very sticky, but enjoyed themselves! Later on it was time for the campfire, when songs and stories were shared. The fire brigade made an unexpected visit. Before coming back into the school, we walked across the field, with the aid of torches. Back inside, we had some food and drink and watched a film. The children slowly drifted off to sleep, but not for long, and had pancakes and cereal for breakfast. A great time was had by all!

School Council

The School Council has been busy helping out with the Commenius Project by compiling a book of English Recipes. They would like to thank everyone who made a contribution. They have also been discussing fund raising ideas to support Charlie the horse.

Garston Station Community Art Project Celebration

Some children from Years 3 and 4 joined together to produce some art work, helped by Hertfordshire Groundwork Trust. The pictures can be seen adjoining the fences alongside the platform of Garston Station.

Berrygrove Governors News

We would like to introduce you to one of the Governors of Berrygrove Primary and Nursery School, namely Kathryn Williams.

My name is Kathryn Williams. I have two sons and two grandchildren. I was a Deputy Headteacher in St. Albans and Hemel Hempstead for many years. I have been a Community Governor at Berrygrove for three and a half years because, having retired, I wanted to do something to help children in the local community to fulfil their potential, and I find Berrygrove such an exciting place to be. I do a lot of tap dancing and line dancing, including being in shows, and I am an avid theatre-goer.

Year Six SATs

On the 10th May Year Six started their SATs and I can tell you we weren’t looking forward to it; once we got started we couldn’t stop! We started with Math test ‘A’ and being in that room and looking at everyone's faces, well you had to be there! This is what Bethan Long had to say about it, “I was a bit nervous at first but when I started to get into the questions and the booklet I started to feel more comfortable with it!” This is what I said, “SATs was a nervy time for everyone including me but I didn’t show it, I guess. When you do your SATs you have to have self belief.” To all the Year Six children coming up, have confidence when you start your SATs! Ryan Douglas—6P

Reception

Key Stage Two

On Friday 2nd July, Berrygrove School hosted its annual KS2 sports day. The sun was shinning and there was a cool breeze in the air, making it perfect conditions. There were some fantastic events such as sprints, relay, dribbling, hoop-la challenge and of course the three legged race. All children from Years 3-6 took part, each representing a different Commonwealth country such as Ghana, Cyprus, and Wales. Everyone who took part showed great effort and ability and were cheered all the way by the adult support. In the end, it was Mrs Bloomfield’s New Zealand team that came out on top to lift the sports day trophy.

Reception had a successful sports day and congratulations to the Jamaican team who finished in first place. Despite the weather being scorching hot the children enjoyed all the races. Thank you to everyone who came to watch.
