Located along the great River Road between NewOrleans and Baton Rouge, surrounded by otherrenowned plantations that attract tourists from aroundthe world, Whitney Plantation offers an alternativeperspective to what life was really like for the peoplewho made the plantation owners wealthy.New Orleans trial lawyer John Cummings bought theproperty in the 1990s and has spent over $7 million ofhis own money restoring and renovating it as a way topay homage to all people who were enslaved.

The oneandahalf hour walking tour takes visitorsthrough the Creole and Greek Revivalstyle mansion,an overseer’s house, a blacksmith shop, the oldestkitchen in Louisiana, slave cabins, a latticed 1868steel jail similar to the type used to restrain slaves, and a shingled AfricanAmerican church.

The 250acre property also features realistic ceramicstatues of slave children in tattered clothing, alongwith a memorial in a former sugarcane field that takesthe form of a maze of black granite walls engravedwith the names of thousands of slaves.

Another emotionally stirring memorial is the “Field ofAngels”, a circular courtyard listing the names of2,200 slave babies in St. John Parish who died beforetheir third birthdays.
