This groupincludes a network for scholars –established and emerging – whoseresearch focuses on sexualitiesacross disciplines and broadlydefined. The working group wasproposed by CSA members JafariSinclaire Allen, Natalie Bennett,Rosamond S. King, and AngeliqueV. Nixon, with the support of overthirty members of the CSA.

GRADUATE STUDENT CORNER

Graduate Student Breakfast & Other 2015Mentoring Activities in New Orleans

Students and faculty members are encouraged toparticipate in our specially­planned events for graduatestudents during our conference in New Orleans.Graduate students and faculty will be matched inmentor relationships that will allow us to get to knoweach other. CSA will then host a breakfast meeting forthe mentors and their graduate students to allow ournew (and most likely young) members to better findtheir way within the CSA and carry the torch into thefuture. Throughout the week we will ask the graduatestudents to check in with their mentors to report howthey are doing with networking, attending sessions andfeeling like valued members of the association.Graduate students and interested faculty shouldcontact Russell Benjamin at [email protected] become part of this experience (include researcharea please). In the past, this has been one of themore memorable events that our graduate studentsreport from the conference.

In addition, CSA will be presenting two panelsdesigned to assist young CSA scholars. The firstconcerns how to finish a Ph.D. and get a job. Threejunior faculty members who recently completed theirdoctorates will help graduate students learn the lateststrategies for working with their committees, writingtheir dissertations and ultimately getting into the jobmarket. The second panel will focus on getting tenureand promotion and will include one senior and tworecently tenured faculty members. Topics to becovered include how to prepare tenure and promotiondossiers, how to work with department chairs and howto select external reviewers. Check the 2015conference program for the day and time for these twopanels.

Thirdly, all graduate students should consider applyingfor two awards: the George Priestley Graduate StudentAward and the Barbara T. Christian Literary Award.The Caribbean Studies Social Justice GraduateStudent Paper Award has been established in honor ofDr. George Priestley in recognition of his lifelongcontributions to social justice, anti­racism, HIV/AIDSawareness, the Afro­Latino identity, and internationalhuman rights issues. The Barbara T. Christian LiteraryAward was established in 2001 by past CSA President,Dr. Cora Christian, to celebrate her sister’s intellectuallegacy in black feminist criticism. New Orleans hotel rooms are difficult to come by. Conference participants maymake reservations online at https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_gi_new&groupID=33653120, or by calling the in­house reservationsoffice at 504­584­3959, Monday­Sunday, 7 am to 6 pm CST, and providing thegroup code, CSA. If you find that are not able to book rooms on certain datesonline, make your reservation for any of the five nights for which we have contracted(Monday through Friday), and then call the hotel with your confirmation number. Atthat point, based on hotel availability, you may add any of these nights outside of ourblock: Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 22nd – 24th, and Saturday and SundayMay 30th – 31st. There are more rooms available the weekend before theconference than afterwards, and our special CSA Whitney Plantation Tours will takeplace the weekend before.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­
