FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Hello, Talofa lava, Chao, Dia dhaoibh, Namaste, Gidday, Guten Tag, Assalamulaikum, Ciao, Salve, Ayubowan, Fakaalofa atu, Hola, Susaday, Bonjour, Ni Hao Nau mai, haere mai,

2020 has got off to a roaring start! Our Year 6’s attended yesterday’s pōwhiri at South Wellington Intermediate School in support of last year’s leavers. They were excellent ambassadors for Owhiro Bay School and their presence was appreciated by their friends and the SWIS team.

STATIONERY- A huge thank you to you all! Our tamariki have had the best start due to your diligence in ensuring they have all the stationery they need. I have had some positive feedback about the Office Max Back to School online option as a hassle free alternative. We worked hard to keep requirements and cost down to a minimum. My apologies for the initial mix up with the writing books for the Year 4-6 group. We made a mistake. Luckily for us an eagle-eyed student and parent let us know and we managed to get it changed, unfortunately we weren’t quite quick enough for the early birds. We are happy to exchange anything that might need changing at no cost.

LUNCH ORDERING- as part of an on-going drive to become healthier, lunch ordering of the current menu will now only be available on Wednesday’s, Thursdays and Fridays. There will be NO lunch ordering available on Mondays or Tuesdays. Please note the new pricing in other notices in the newsletter.

STAFFING- Our support team of Wendy, Joanne, Helen, Jude and Alex are all on deck.

Year 1 Harakeke Room 5 Ms Chamberlain Year 2-3 Whanake Room 6 Jo Sciascia Year 2-3 Whanake Room 7 Mrs Meffan

We have Sherwin Mottram and Matua Richard providing regular weekly release for Julie, Vikki and Jo. In general, classroom release for teachers (CRT) will be covered by Amie Roberts and Nicola Clissold. As both Julie and Richard are new to Owhiro Bay School we will be welcoming them along with all our new pupils and whānau next Tuesday afternoon.

MYSTERY- the holidays provided us with the mystery of the oven. The oven currently sitting in the carpark somehow made it into the school skip. Our skip is padlocked and requires a key. If you can help us by taking the oven to the tip that would be much appreciated. We are happy to reimburse the tip fee as metal waste is no longer being accepted at the recycling centre.

SCHOOLDOCS- thank you for choosing to be part of our learning community. All our policies and procedures are available online. To get off to a great start I recommend reading the Parents and Whānau section.

https://owhiro.schooldocs.co.nz/index.htm?toc.htm?7011.htm?id=5ef353e2-301a-4713-aca7-e7d643d31b3c MEET THE TEACHERS – Next Thursday 13 February we will be hosting our Meet the Teacher night”. “Meet the teacher” sessions are an opportunity for parents to come along and meet your child’s teacher and to learn about the hub/classroom programmes, routines and expectations for the year. Harakeke (Room 5) will begin at 6.00 – 6.15, Whanake (Rooms 6 and 7) will begin at 6.15 – 6.30 and Māhuri from 6.30 – 6.45 pm). I urge as many of you to attend as possible so that we can work in partnership to ensure SUCCESS for every child. HOME LEARNING CHAT – each week we will be suggesting a kaupapa/topic that you may wish to talk with your child about. This week have a chat about “how and when different cultures celebrate New Year”. There are lots of opportunities in and around Wellington to celebrate Waitangi Day. Waka paddling in Porirua looks exciting. Closer to home the Kotahi Festival hosted by Kahurangi School in Strathmore boasts food and music - a winning combination. I’m also looking forward to the planned fireworks display at the waterfront on Friday evening as a celebration marking the Chinese New Year, the year of the rat.

Ni hao, Tineke and the team

WELCOME To Grace, Robin, Danielle, Bailey, Rufus, Riyad, Iris, Odin, TJ and Penny who joined Harakeke this week and to Bonnie who joined children in Whanake (Room 6). Welcome also to the families of Grace, Bailey, Rufus, Riyad, Odin, TJ, Penny and Bonnie to our school community. To Julie Bennett who is our New Māhuri (Room 1) teacher and Richard Dobson who will be classroom release teacher (Māhuri – Room 1).

SUNSMART

A reminder that in Term 1 and Term 4, children need to wear a sunhat when outside every day. We encourage hats as opposed to caps to provide extra care in looking after the necks and ears of students and also encourage students to wear sunblock and sun glasses when they are outside during the “sunsmart” months to keep them safe from the harmful rays.

SCHOOL HOURS

Please note that the school is open for students from 8.30 am each day. Children are encouraged to arrive between 8.30 and 8.55 am so that they can get ready for learning. The bell rings to start the day at 8.55 am There are two breaks for food and play:

Playtime: 11.00 – 11.30

Lunchtime: 12.40 – 1.30

Although we aim to be as open and welcoming as possible students cannot go into their rooms before 8.30 am as teachers are busy preparing learning programmes. Please do not bring your child to school before 8.30 am or allow them to leave home too early.

After school all students go home at 3.00 pm. Harakeke and Whanake students are collected from their classrom. Please ensure your child/ren are collected by 3.15 pm at the latest as teachers have meetings and other commitments from this time and cannot supervise children after 3.00 pm. All other students wait in the foyer until their parents/caregivers or adult collecting them, arrive.

Please note that the office is unattended after 1.30 pm and we cannot always guarantee phone messages will get through.

NOTE: If your child wishes to play in the school grounds, it is important they go home first so parents/caregivers know where they are.

SAFETY – ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL

We ask students and adults coming from the south side of the carpark, to enter the school through the gate into the courts and those coming from the north to enter through the main gate. This is too stop any foot traffic in the carpark area and prevent possible accidents from occurring.

As both the kindergarten and school staff require use of the school carpark, and often have heavy loads to carry we ask you to park outside the school – thank you.

LUNCHES

For your information, the following items are available from the school canteen Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays.

As our suppliers have increased the price on certain items – our prices are now as follows with a slight increase to the pie and pizza only.

Mince Pie $2.50

Hawaiian Pizza $2.50

Sausage Roll $1.50

Butter Chicken Wrap $3.00

Small Cookie .80c

Rice Wheels $1.00

Muffins (chocolate or blueberry) $1.00

Our Value of the week is CONFIDENCE. We show CONFIDENCE when:

We are ready for new challenges.

SPORTS SPOT

Touch Rugby

Calling all budding Touch Rugby players. If you love to run

and have fun, then come and play Touch. The games are on

Wednesday afternoons at Wakefield Park in Island Bay. The

season starts on 19th Feb with registrations closing next

week, Wed 12th Feb. Cost is approx. $20 per child. We are

looking for players from Year 3 and upwards. We have had

very strong senior teams (Yr 5 and 6) for many years but

last year we did not manage to pull together a junior team

(Yr 3 and 4).

We need the young ones to come through the ranks so we

can keep Touch going at OBS. The Yr 3 and 4 team will need

an adult supervisor. Please let Val Munro or Kim McNicol

know ASAP if you want to get involved. Val is

on [email protected] and Kim is

on [email protected].

ROCKS Run Club Recommences, Thursday 20 February 2020. One of the world's top female ultra-trail runners, Fiona Hayvice (mother of Yr 4, Spike) leads Run Club, Thursday’s from 3-4pm (meet on the grass in front of Harakeke). Keen to expose our children to the joy of running, Fiona coordinates fun, running centric games on the school field, before taking the children for a run-splore (using the adjacent grass oval, and the trails and reserves that are easily accessible from school). All ages are welcome - just bring an active attitude. If your child is keen to join, please email their name, year and your mobile number,

to [email protected].
