Gathering Restrictions

Gathering restrictions have changed slightly for Term 4 after new public

health advice. This means that we are able to have a limited audience in grade

assemblies. This will be limited to 1 person per family due to the space

available and the restrictions still in place. We will not be able to have

parents at whole school assemblies as the hall is almost full once the students

are all seated. There is more space available during grade assemblies. We

look forward to seeing parents attending again! The major Academic Awards

will be presented in grade assemblies in the last few weeks of Term 4 so that

a parent or guardian will be able to attend.

Coding

It has been great to have Mrs Heynes offering coding as an extended learning

opportunity during Term 3. Students have thoroughly enjoyed it. There will

be a range of new opportunities in Term 4. We are delighted to have the

award winning Bindy Stephen join us to run Drama. Coding will be running

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations Samuel!

Sam swam six races over two days at the Tasmanian Short Course State

Championships 2021.

He achieved a Bronze and three Gold Medals and title of “11 and under Backstroke

State Champion”. It's taken a lot of training and persistence on his part to get him to

this level.

Sam was so excited to secure the gold for his backstroke (his strongest stroke) but

his highlight of the weekend was not getting disqualified in the 100m Individual

Medley (25m of each stroke)! Instead Sam set a huge 12.63sec PB and came 4th,

missing the bronze by a whisker!

THANK YOU! MEDICAL

Students may get diagnosed with new medical

conditions during the school year or their conditions

may change. Please contact the school to ensure that

our medical information is up to date after any changes.

This will help us keep students safe and well.

Sometimes we are unaware that students have asthma

unless we are notified. Please contact the office to put

an asthma plan in place or to change any existing plans.

Please also keep us updated if there are any over the

counter medications that we need to know about that

students may need at school.

NORTH V NORTH WEST

Summerdale Primary had 18 students participate in the

North v North West LSSSA competition, which was

hosted here in Launceston last Thursday. It was a windy

day but all sports were able to play and everyone

enjoyed the experience. The students played soccer,

football, netball and hockey.

CANTEEN CUPCAKES!

Homemade, only $1.50 each.

Available Wednesday - Fridays

Can be ordered on QKR

or at the Canteen.

So cute you won't want to eat them!!

RESPECTFUL SCHOOLS

CHILDREN’S UNIVERSITY

Children’s University Passports need to be submitted to Mr Eastley by Friday 15h October. Students who hand

passports in after this date will not be able to graduate in 2021 even if they have achieved 30 hours or more.

Students who have not reached 30 hours can continue their learning in 2022 and work towards their first

certificate.

A reminder that students can claim up to 10 hours for each sporting activity they are involved with. Some students

are forgetting to include that in their passports.

The Graduation Ceremony will be held at the University on 23rd November.

Over the coming months you may see tv commercials, posters in our school and bus advertising. This is part of an

awareness campaign, that is aimed at stopping offensive behaviour towards staff in Tasmanian schools. The simple

message coming out of the Campaign is that disrespect in schools is crossing the line and that is not ok.

Our school is committed to providing a safe and secure workplace for all staff, as well as a safe environment for

students to learn. We are working to eliminate any instances of offensive behaviour from adults directed towards

school staff.

Most school community members respect schools and staff. However, at times schools deal with unacceptable

adult behaviour, which may include aggressive, threatening, or violent behaviour. This can occur in the presence of

students.

This Campaign has been developed by the Department of Education which included involvement from Principals,

school staff and parents.

Some of the key messages from the campaign are:

• Everyone has the right to feel respected and safe at school, including school staff. It’s not just a

courtesy, it’s the law.

• The best outcomes for children come when schools and parents work together respectfully.

• Respectful behaviour in our schools is everyone’s right and everyone’s responsibility.

If you would like to discuss any part of the campaign or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact

NAPLAN

NAPLAN Reports have been sent home today with students in Grades 3 and 5. A letter has been included that

contains information about how to interpret the report. Please see your child’s teacher if you need any assistance.

NAPLAN is a useful tool as it provides a range of information that is very valuable to our school. It has been

pleasing to see our school show improvement in both the Year 3 and Year 5 tests. It was great to see an

improvement in measures of learning growth, where we performed very well. We performed well above ‘similar

schools’ (those schools around Australia with a similar community profile as ours) in all tests. We also performed

above Tasmanian schools on almost all of the tests. Year 3 Writing was our strongest area with a 15 point

improvement on the last NAPLAN assessment and 11 points higher than the Tasmanian average. 5 students scored

in the top 1% of Australian students, with many more in the top 10%.

It is important to remember that these tests are one-off assessments on a particular day. It may not represent your

child’s actual level of achievement. Your child’s teacher is the best source of information about your child’s learning

as they work with them every day. Some children do not show their true achievement during test conditions.

Students who get anxious often do not show their potential. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any

questions about their learning progress. A small number of students have had their results affected by technical

difficulties now that most tests are online.

NAPLAN Reports are provided to give parents information about student achievement. They are not written for

students. Sharing this information with students may or may not be appropriate depending on your personal

circumstances.

Each year the Department of Education surveys parents

to ask what they think about our wonderful school.

We would appreciate it if someone from your family

could take the time to complete the survey. We

promise it won’t take too long!

You can complete the online survey at any time until

Friday 17 September 2021.
