showcasing student excellence where parents have key roles.

The second opportunity is on Friday night at the Princess

Theatre where our instrumental students have their chance to

shine. Their year’s work culminates in their combined

performance in the Esk Band. A special thanks to Mr Duncan

Howie for his enthusiasm and commitment to be the school

facilitator. This is another way a parent helps make opportunities

Swimming Carnival

This year the Grade 5/6 carnival will be held on the morning

of Tuesday 1 December and the Grade 3/4’s are in the

afternoon. Our apologies if parents assumed it would be the

other way around and we should have informed you earlier –

our fault. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The reason is that the date for the LSSSA swimming carnival

was changed. It is now the day after our carnival and Anita

needs time in the afternoon to co-ordinate the Grade 5/6

times in order for our team to be selected before the end of

the day of our carnival.

Terrorism

With the tragic events in France on the news every night your

child may be expressing fears or concerns. This is a website

that supports parents with ways to support their child.

Tomorrow is our volunteer morning tea. Invitations have

been sent out but if you have not received yours please

contact the school office as you are very welcome to attend.

Did you solve the Puzzle in your pocket?

Last week staff and students participated in maths week.

Students solved giant puzzles and shared maths games with

their buddy class. Our week concluded with a whole school

assembly showcasing how maths is used at school and in our

everyday lives. The great shape debate/straw construction

challenge was very popular in classes with the winner from

each grade showing their strongest construction. We all

enjoyed a sunny afternoon sharing and solving puzzles in our

pocket. Thanks to parents and family members who came

along.

The winners of the great shape debate were… Prep Madison Mazoney and Lucy Walker

Grade 1 Charley Tamplin and Hollie Meredith

Grade 2 Leo Porihis

Grade 3 Emmaleigh Groeneveld and Mia White

Grade 4 Tobey Fensom, Jim Jordan and Matthew Du

Vergier

Grade 5 Emily Oakley, Jorja Sigtenhorst and Hannah

Flanagan

Grade 6 Josh Sward, Sarah Wright, Megan van der Ploeg

and Bradley Lewis

We are the ruMAD team and we hope to make a difference in the world. We would like to increase awareness of the challenges for refugees because it is very important to know. Four million people are homeless because of a terrorist group called Islamic State (IS). The homeless people are called Asylum Seekers and they have left their country because of extreme violence. There are lots of children like you and me. Now it is hard for these asylum seekers and refugees to get educated, get jobs, and find somewhere safe to live. The team has been working towards RAISING AWARENESS of the need for a safe place for the refugees and asylum seekers to call home. We are holding a RAD DAY (Refugee Awareness Day) where everyone can dress up as a ‘famous person who has helped someone’ (for example Nelson Mandela, Spiderman) .This doesn’t have to be someone who has helped refugees, it may be someone who has helped the world or is your role model and has helped YOU Or you can bring an object that has helped you in any way (for example compass, camera). Be ready to share about who you have chosen to dress up as or the item you have brought and learn a little about life for an Asylum Seeker or Refugee. RAD day will be on Friday November 27th. Grade 5 and 6’s will need to bring their sports gear as well.

Chappy’s Christmas LunCh Group

It’s time for Chappy’s Christmas Lunch Group. On December 1st and 8th you are invited to join Chappy to talk about how we celebrate Christmas in our families, to play some games and make something special. So come and join us at eating time and have some fun together. I will let everyone know our venue soon. Parents are welcome to join us. Students, if you would like to come along please bring your permission slip to the office as soon as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My child ________________________________________________ from class _____________ has permission to come to Chappy’s Christmas Lunch Group. I recognise there will be Christian Christmas themes mentioned along with chats about other ways Riverside families celebrate Christmas. I _____________________________________________ give permission for my student to attend Chappy’s Christmas Lunch Group. I give permission for my student to take home a copy of the Christmas story if they would like one. Yes / No (please circle)

RPSA NEWS (Riverside Primary School Association Inc)

REPORT FROM NOVEMBER RPSA MEETING

Thanks to all the parents who came along to our meeting this week; it was great to see a good

turnout for our last meeting for 2015.

Our AGM will be held in March 2016 and we would welcome some new faces to join our

committee. If you have any questions about what this involves please email and ask.

It has been a busy year and I would like to thank all the staff, parents/carers and grandparents of

Riverside Primary School for their support of the RPSA in 2015. Volunteers across the school help

in many ways; sadly in 2016 we are losing some valued volunteers who are moving interstate or

whose children are moving into high school. In particular I would like to thank those who have

helped for a number of years with school banking, the uniform shop and the RPSA executive.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy summer break.

Natalie Kidd — RPSA Chairperson [email protected]

On Friday 20 November it is World Toilet Day. On World Toilet Day we would like to ask people that when you go to the toilet, take a moment to think how lucky you are to have a toilet to go to. In the world 2.3 billion people do not have a safe toilet. Just a thought from the Poverty Fighters Lunch Group (Eve, Nathan, Cooper and Tahlia) To find out more about World Toilet Day go to http://worldtoilet.org/
