More European adventures with just for groups!...
Our tour today takes in Pula with a guided tour of the former naval
base of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its amphitheatre - one of the
largest the Romans ever built - is the jewel of the city. We have lunch
(included) in Pula before making our way to Rovinj, a small town built
upon a rocky peninsula and one of the most attractive towns of Croa-
tia. Here you can stroll through the narrow streets and thereby pass
the lions of Saint Marc’s, which guard the palace, the Church of St.
Eufemia, one of the most beautiful examples of the local Baroque architecture, and the bustling
port area. We then continue to Porec where our guided tour will include the Euphrasian Basilica
from the 6th century and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
An amazing “nature day” today in the Plitvice Lakes National Park,
a majestic site in the heart of the wooded mountains of Mala Kapela
(550m). We explore this outstanding park in all its natural beauty,
where 12 lakes and waterfalls run into each other to form a most
sumptuous landscape. After lunch (included) we will take a pleasant
boat trip (included) on the lake of Kozjak, followed by a walk from the
largest to the smallest waterfall ending at the upper lake of Galovac,
before our onward trip by panoramic train (included) to round off an-
other memorable day.
Another fascinating excursion as we make our way to Krk, the largest
Adriatic island. After a guided tour of the city and some free time at
your leisure, we head to Punat and board a boat heading to the island
of Kosljun, which is famous for its Franciscan monastery. We will visit
St. Mary’s Church, which was built in the 15th century and houses a
rich art collection, before continuing to Baska in the very south of the
island. Hidden in a bay, this bathing resort stretches out along a beach
of 2km which is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches of the Adriatic. Then on-
wards to Vrbnik, a picturesque small town nestled onto a rock above the sea. After a short walk
through the historic centre, you will be invited to taste a local wine with ham and cheese (in-
cluded). We enjoy lunch (included) en route back to our resort hotel.
Today we make our way to Opatija, which used to be 'the' bathing re-
sort of the crowned heads during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From
the splendour of this period, the so-called 'Nice of the Adriatic' has
been able to conserve villas in neo-Baroque, neoclassical and Vene-
tian-Gothic style as well as charming old palaces. They can be viewed
whilst walking down the seaside promenade, the famous 'Lungomare'.
In the park of the villa Angiolina, you can admire countless exotic
plants, which have flourished for more than a century. After lunch (included) we visit the famous
Postojna Cave (included). You will be amazed by the stalactite formations which are veritable
artworks. We then explore the cave by train (included) and thereby pass through 20km of spec-
tacular galleries and halls.

AUTUMN 2012 ISSUE 22 CALL FIONA, SUZANNE, SALLY OR HANNAH ON 01603 886740
Our group trip to Krakow started really early on
a wet Sunday morning as we gathered at
Stansted for our flight. We couldn’t check in
any luggage due to a baggage handlers’
strike which resulted in a steep learning curve in mini-
malist packing to be able to get all our necessities into
our cabin baggage!
Following our 'eventful' flight from Stansted we were met
in Krakow by Jim, our 'just for groups!' tour escort, who
gave us a warm welcome and saw to it that we all ar-
rived safely at the Swing Hotel, our excellent home for
the next five nights. We had most of the day at leisure
before we joined Jim in the bar for a welcome drink and
a run through of the week’s itinerary. Monday saw us
bright and refreshed and looking forward to our day in
Krakow, which started with a walking tour with
Christophe, a local guide. The old town of Krakow is an
ideal size for the tourist as everything is accessible by
foot, and apart from the slope up to the Royal Castle on
Wawel Hill, it is all fairly flat. Our guided tour started at
the 15th century Barbican and took us across what used
to be the moat, and through the gate in what remains of
the city walls. In the 19th century the moat was filled in
and the walls replaced by a delightful park called the
Planty, which encircles the old town with pleasant
wooded paths and green open spaces.
A short walk from the gate brought us into the Market
Square which is lively and colourful with plenty of cafes
and an ideal place to relax and take in the sights. Our
guide took us to the Collegium Maius dating from 1400
and the oldest university building in the world, to see the
university clock. Three times a day, at 11am, 1pm and
3pm, the clock plays the university’s anthem while send-
ing forth a procession of carved wooden figures that de-
pict important people from the university’s history.
From here we made our way, passing buildings and
churches too numerous to mention, to the fortified
Wawel Hill, home to the Royal Castle and Krakow
Cathedral. From a viewpoint on the hill we looked down
across the Vistula River and listened while Christophe,
our local guide, told us the legend of the dragon that
supposedly lived in a cave down below.
On Tuesday we had a thought provoking visit to the for-
mer Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz and the
nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau. The exhibit of 40,000 pairs
of shoes that belonged to some of the victims is a
poignant reminder of the extent of the awful tragedy that
took place here.
Wednesday morning found us at the Wieliczka Salt
Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the
13th century the mine’s extensive network of caverns,
passageways and lakes descend from a depth of 64 to
327 metres, covering nine levels. It is a fascinating place
to visit with wonderful sculptures and murals, and a
complete church carved out of the salt. Even the 'crystal'
drops on the chandeliers are shaped out of salt. I had
imagined the salt would be snow white and glistening,
so was initially disappointed to find it’s a greenish-grey,
but the craftsmanship is so amazing one finds that it
doesn’t really matter.
In the afternoon Jim arranged for us to have a guided
walk around Kazimerz, the historic Jewish area of
Krakow: 65,000 Kazimerz residents were killed by the
Nazis in WWII. Following that we visited the nearby
Schindler Museum, built on the site of Oscar Schindler’s
factory where during WWII he ‘employed’ thousands of
Jews saving them from becoming part of the Nazi’s
'final solution'.
We spent Thursday, our last day, visiting Zakopane, a
popular mountain resort in the Tatras Mountains - 'the
Polish Alps'. When we arrived we were lucky enough to
see a procession leaving the church to walk through the
town. Someone told us it was part of the 'Corpus Christi'
celebrations and was in honour of the 'Sacred Heart'. A
funicular railway took us up to a view point where we
had lunch, while admiring the glorious panorama of
mountain peaks.
All too soon it was time to go home. We all really en-
joyed our time in Poland and I would highly recommend
the Swing Hotel and 'just for groups!' to anyone wish-
ing to visit Krakow.
