Chairman Howard H. Peckham, Director

of the Library, Secretam

rers. He urges humane treatment of the Negroes.

Tryon was an odd product of the se5enteenth century, a self- taught, self-made man. He was put to work at age nine, estab- lished himself in London, under- went a religious conversion, trav- eled to Barbados, and then be- gan writing furiously. He was a teetotaler and a vegetarian, among other things, and clearly a humanitarian in advance, of his times. His curious combination of theology and dietetics affected more people than his antislavery views.

Admiral Drake The French public, at least

those who could read only

French, had a hard time he;iring about Sir Francis Drake's voyage around the world, 1577-79. Hakluyt's account of the circum- navigation as published in 1600 was translated into French and issued in 1613. Then in 1627 a new edition was published with an additional part describing countries Drake never saw; this title is in the Lihrary. Recently we acquired the third edition, 1641, Le Voyage Curieux par Fran~ois Drach, becaux it con- tains a rare world map showing Drake's route, the Americas, and a portrait of the dauntless ad- miral.

Tilly the Toila A man with the improbable

name of Tilly Buttrick, Jr., is almost certain to be either (a) a weakling and a bachelor who faithfully supports his mother and sings tenor in the church choir, or (b) a belligerent, adven- turous, outdoors man with rest- less feet. Our Tilly is the latter.

He was born in Massachusetts in 1783 and had already uav- eled to the Pacific and again to the West Indies before he was thirty. He was on a tour of Can- ada when the War of 1812 broke out. He was imprisoned but. soon released. In 1814 he made a river trip down the Allegheny and Ohio rivers to Louisville and re- turned on horseback. The next spring he went by flatboat clear to brew Orleans. Then he re- turned to Cincinnati on foot, taking forty-seven miserable days, sick, hungry, and alone. He was on Sandusky Bay in 1819 and contracted a disease by which he lost his sight. This is only part of his story. The full tale is told in the Voyages, Trav- els and Discouerzes of Tilly But- trick, Jr. (Boston 1831). It's scarce, scarce as Tilly is. Our

copy, in wrappers, looks as if it had just come from the printer.

Topics and Readers It was an interesting summer

at the Library, made so largely by our readers and their investi- gations. We frankly "pump" our readers about the subjects of their research, thus contributing to our own knowledge while helping them.

Our Clements Library-Lilly Endowment Fellows were work- ing on British strategy in the Revolution, Anglo-American re- lations after the war, and the antislavery movement in the West Indies. We had four read- ers working on biographies: of Sir Henry Clinton, Admiral Lord Howe, Gen. Nathanael Greene, and Lord George Ger- main. We had two readers in early American music looking over the correspondence and conlpositions of Andrew Law.

Investigations were under way on the War of ~ S I Z , transporta- tion in southern New England, the Declaration of Indepen- dence, the British army in North America, the publications of Matthew Carey, British orders in council, the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century, the books of Isaiah Thomas. And on and on. Perhaps now you see the fascinating variety of intellectu- al foods we have cooking here. The cooks broaden our horizons, too, because the staff gets to know most of them rather well.

One of our readers, who has worked in other research li- braries in this country as well as in the British Museum and Ox- ford's Badleian Library, de- clared loudly on his fourth day here: "This is absolutely the finest place to work there is! The hospitality and helpfulness are superb. I wish I could stay a year."
