    HISTORY

SMS messaging was first used in December 1992 by Neil Papworth.

Standard SMS messaging uses 160 bytes per message, which translates to 160characters of the English alphabet or as few as 70 characters for languages usingnon-Latin alphabets.

Initial growth of text messaging was slow, with customers in 1995 sending onaverage only 0.4 message per GSM customer per month.

SMS is available on a wide range of networks, including 3G networks.

Today, text messaging is used 74% of all mobile phone users worldwide.

2.4 billion out of 3.3 billion phone subscribers, at end of 2011 being active usersof the Short Message Service.

    HOW DOES SOME WORK?

The SMC (Short Message Center) is the entity which

does the job of store and forward of messages to

    and from the mobile station.

The SMS GWMS (SMS gateway MSC) is a gateway

MSC that can also receive short messages.

HLR is the main database in a mobile network.

MSC (Mobile Switching Center) is the entity in a

GSM network which does the job of switching

connections between mobile stations or between

mobile stations and the fixed network.

A VLR (Visitor Location Register) corresponds to

each MSC and contains temporary information

    about the mobile.

The BSS consists of transceivers, which send and

receive information over the air interface, to and

    from the mobile station.

Many operators offer e-mail service over SMS.

It is possible to send e-mail messages (less than 160 characters) from a mobilephone to any e-mail address via SMS.

Information services like news, weather, entertainment and stock prices etc. can

be availed just by sending a keyword like NEWS, WEATH etc to the short message

    center number.

SMS can be used by the network operators to provide services like balance

enquiry in case of prepaid cards using SMS.

Mobile chatting is one more hot application of SMS.

SMS can be used to notify users that they have received new voice-mail

    or fax messages.

    Internet e-mail alerts.

Using SIM-Toolkit, now a part of GSM specifications, SMS can be used to

have on the air activation of features.

    Downloading new ring tones.

    PRESENT STATUS

SMS has seen unprecedented growth in the last few years.

In Europe SMS has already crossed three billion messages per monthmark.

The first short message was sent in December 1992 from a Personal

Computer (PC) to a mobile phone on the Vodafone GSM network in the

    UK.

In many parts of Europe people arespending more on SMS as

    compared to voice services.

In Germany, UK, and Italy, SMS is

    very popular and the popularity

    especially among young people

    continues to rise.

    Developments like WAP and SIM

    toolkit are greatly helping to

    increase the message usage.

LIMITATIONS OF SMS Messages are plain vanilla in nature. You can only send simple text messages. There is no

scope for any graphics or audio.

The messages are limited by size.

The limitation of easy input mechanisms in mobile devices makes it very uncomfortable

sending messages larger than even 5-6 words.

Many proprietary protocols are used by SMS operators and application developers need to

implement different interfaces for making their applications work with different SMS

    centers.

SMS protocol data units as defined in GSM 03.40 are also not very efficient.

    Data rate and latency.

The store and forward nature of SMS

Earlier according to TRAI only 100 sms per day were allowed but now it has extend to 200sms per day.

IN BUSINESS The use of text messaging for business purposes has grown significantly during

    the mid-2000s.

Practical uses of text messaging include the fuse of SMS for confirming delivery

    for instant communication.

Several universities have implemented a system of texting students and faculties

    campus alerts.

As text messaging has proliferated in business, so too have regulations governing

    its use.

One regulation specifically governing the use of text messaging in financial-

services firms engaged in stocks, equities, and securities trading is Regulatory

Notice 07-59, Supervision of Electronic Communications.

In 07, FINRA(Financial Industry regulatory authority) noted that "electronic

communications", "e-mail", and "electronic correspondence" may be used

interchangeably and can include such forms of electronic messaging as instant

    messaging and text messaging.

Security, confidentiality, reliability and speed of SMS are among the most

important guarantees industries such as financial services, energy and

commodities trading, health care and enterprises demand in their mission-critical

    procedures.

In January 2009, Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) published the Mobile

    Banking Overview for financial institutions.

Typical business-to-business applications are telematics and Machine-to-Machine

in which two applications automatically communicate with each other.

Businesses can use SMS for time-critical alerts, updates and reminders, mobilecampaigns, content and entertainment applications.

    INITIATIVE AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

SMS is a first generation GSM service.

    Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS).

In EMS there are 10 different predefined sounds including low and high

chimes and chords, Ding, TaDa, Claps, Drum and Notify.

The next step in the evolution of SMS, which requires substantial changes

in the network infrastructure, is the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)

that allows a combination of text, sounds, images and video.

MMS uses standardized protocols like WAP. While EMS requires contentreformatting for mobile devices, there is no such requirement for MMS.

According to 3GPP standards MMS is a new service, which has no direct

equivalent in the previous ETSI/GSM world or in the fixed network world.

CONCLUSION SMS, because of its very nature has unique advantages that other non voice

    services do not have.

The reasons for the enormous popularity of SMS have been the fact that this

mechanism of sending and receiving messages not only saves time but costs less

    as well.

SMS is also uniquely positioned as a very attractive advertisement medium.

SMS is not only providing a useful mechanism for a host of innovative services

over mobile networks but it acting as a point of entry for new data services likeWAP in mobile networks.
