PROGRAMME GUIDELINE

On the first day we will learn the key words in the history of art in Umbria. Making a detour into history we will prepare for the guided tour of the city of Spoleto in the afternoon: a journey from the Romans to the Lombards through to the Renaissance.


UMBRIA FULL IMMERSION - Programme guideline -

The second day will be dedicated to the senses of TASTE and SMELL: we will visit the Villa Pianciani olive grove. The olive trees, as well as being the symbol of Umbria, will be our inspiration for discussing the typical Umbrian cuisine, starting with olive oil...from the olive grove we will head to the dining room where, around the dinner table, we will practice the key words of our cuisine. We will also prepare for the cookery lesson in the afternoon with the best traditional, healthy and genuine Umbrian ingredients and recipes.

The third day will be all about the spiritual and religious side of Umbria. The starting point will be the Chapel in the garden of the Villa...where there awaits something fascinating and mysterious which will introduce us to the life of the Saint who makes Umbria a destination for pilgrimages and a treasure trove of Catholic Italy. In the afternoon there will be a guided tour of Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis.

On the fourth day it will be time to debate about cinema. We will understand today’s Italy and learn to see contemporary cinema from more perspectives. The cinema will be prepared for this theme. Then, we will become cinema characters ourselves – writing and performing a short script. We will continue our inquiry into Italian cinema by discussing the ‘marriage’ between cinema and literature: the great directors inspired by (less) famous Italian writers.In the afternoon there will be a movie screening and debate.

Finally, on the fifth day, we will spend our morning sharing a few thoughts on Italy. To do this we will split up into small groups each with a theme to think about and prepare some ideas. The time for reflection will be followed by a walk through some different places: in the olive grove, the woods and the garden of the Villa. We will complete our Italian practice with some team games and role-play.

The warm hospitality of the “Old Kitchens.”A private and intimate option. For two or a maximum 4 people.

Accommodation in the Bianchina apartment, in the annex of Villa Pianciani traditionally called the “Cottage of the old Kitchens;” a separate building with 3 floors, adjacent to the Villa and originally dedicated to the kitchens and the toilets of the Villa. In order to better accompany and interpret the history and essential details of these spaces, the new restoration has used and reworked traditional furnishings with a contemporary essence to achieve a soft and refined simplicity.

On the top floor adjacent to the Villa, which opens right out into the garden, the Bianchina apartment consists of 2 double bedrooms with ensuite, a sitting room with fireplace, kitchen and a veranda. The lower floor is linked directly to the first floor of the Villa thanks to a spacious tunnel excavated in the hill where the classrooms for the course are located. Guests have access to the pool and to the Villa’s WiFi connection. This option includes lunch, while guests can organise their own breakfast and dinner using the facilities provided by the house. The first floor of the building, recently fully restored, consists of a large hall, a big sitting room with a billiard table, a large, decorated entrance hall, a bright internal courtyard from which you can see the dining room with fireplace, a large kitchen and toilets. On the first mezzanine there is a small library. On the second floor, which opens out onto the magnificent terrace that overlooks the whole Spoleto valley.

CONFIRMATION OF ENROLMENT AND METHOD OF PAYMENT Enrolment is confirmed upon receipt of an enrolment fee of €70,00 (non refundable, but valid in the event of a change of dates) and of a deposit of 30% of the total cost of the selected course. The balance of the booking can be paid on confirmation that the minimum number of participants has been reached, and no later than the start of the course. Detailed instructions for payment will be sent by e-mail upon receipt of the enrolment request. In the event that the course does not reach the minimum quota to be confirmed, we will notify you of any possible alternative dates for the same course. The participant can choose to change the date of the booking. If not, the deposit will be immediately returned.

In complete freedom within nature

Accommodation in the Rombi Farmhouse, an ancient stone building , carefully restored, tastefully furnished and very well-equipped. Situated among the olive trees on a terraced plot of around 10 acres, with broad-leaved and fruit trees, the farmhouse benefits from a private entrance at the edge of the garden within the Villa Pianciani Complex. This traditional rural building has two floors, a kitchen, hall and sitting room, a large veranda and a patio with a marble table and a magnificent panoramic view of the countryside and Spoleto. On the sunny terrace to the rear of the house, a swimming pool is being built for guests’ use. There are 4 master, double and triple rooms, 3 shared bathrooms with a shower. Guests have access to the pool and to the Villa’s WiFi connection. This option includes lunch, while guests can organise their own breakfast and dinner using the facilities provided by the house.Courses for a minimum of 5 people. We have to inform you that the Villa Pianciani Complex is not a hotel and as a national monument it is subject to the control and administration of the Ministry of Culture, with all relevant restrictions and responsibilities. Guests who take advantage of the possibility to stay at the Complex will be requested to provide any personal data and enrol with the Matilde Pianciani Cultural Association which is responsible for the management of the Complex. There will be no extra charge for enrolment in the ACMP which is included in the prices listed.

OTHER SERVICES: For transfers and excursions which are not part of the course, we can provide participants with a dedicated price list. Certificate of participation At the end of the language course organised by Artelingua, each student who has participated in at least 70% of the prescribed activities will receive a certificate of participa-tion. Insurance Participants are advised to have their own personal insurance and upon arrival will be requested to complete a waiver of liability statement. Handling of personal data In accordance with the Italian legislative de-claration D. Lgs 196/2001 regarding the handling of personal data, any data provided at the moment of enrolment will be handled only until completion of the enrolment of the course and held in the databases of Villa Pianciani and Artelingua, respecting their privacy and not sharing data with third parties for commercial or advertising ends.

1) I’ve never been to Italy and I don’t speak a word of Italian, will Umbria Full Immersion be too much for me? Umbria Full Immersion is a course designed to include those who are coming into contact with the Italian language and culture for the first time and who will be involved in the Italian lifestyle with special attention, fun and light heartedness.

It is considered among the best cities to live in Italy and is easily accessible by train from Rome Fiumicino, Perugia and Florence or by car for those coming from Rome by the Orte exit off the A1, following Terni, Spoleto; for those coming from Florence by the Valdichiana exit following Perugia, Foligno, Spoleto. Villa Pianciani is situated in the area of Terraja, 8km away from Spoleto. Umbria is a welcoming and unpretentious region, offering natural food and still unspoiled countryside, and finally characterised by respectful tourism, far removed from the mass tourism which is however easily accessible from here: a green and peaceful island which will put you at ease.

11) At which airport will I arrive? Is an airport transfer booked?The nearest airports are certainly Rome or Perugia. The journey by train or by car from Rome or Perugia is easy and, before your arrival, it would be our pleasure to help you with any information required (directions or train times). Transfers to and from the airport are not included, however the transfer from Spoleto train station is included. It is certainly possible to organise dedicated transfer services on request (individual or group) from both Rome and Perugia airports.


7)What happens in the cookery class?The cookery class is dedicated to simple Italian cooking, learned through health, culture and experience. The recipes are based on fresh, natural and, where possible, local ingredients. We cook together to share a creative moment and the taste for the quality of healthy Italian cuisine.

8) How do I choose the accommodation that’s right for me? What are the differences between the different options?Slightly different experiences in a common context rich in beauty, light and nature: the large villa of the De luxe option offers the gentle comfort of a high-level architectural gem; the annex of the Easy option offers the cosy elegance of simple but very intimate and welcoming accommodation; while the Country option with its ever-present story, gently told with all home comforts, the story of a land of olive trees that are so synonymous with the surrounding Umbrian countryside.

9) When is the best time to come?We offer courses in different seasons of the year because in each one there is something different to enjoy. Spring and autumn definitely offer the best of the countryside, nature is changing and the climate is often good. Imagine how pleasant it is with the trees in bloom and the mild April temperatures or the colours of the autumn: the oranges, the yellows, the reds combined with the peace and restfulness of this season. In spring and autumn you can experience the gardens and the parks of the villa in complete tranquillity with long walks, stopping from time to time to look at the skyline and the sunset. A glass of wine on the terrace, on the veranda or on the patio will accompany your unlimited nocturnal gaze over the valley, with Spoleto on the horizon.

10) Is it possible to do extra activities? What happens if you don’t participate in all the activities on the programme? When you arrive we will provide you with suggestions of activities in the area and will be available to answer any questions and to help you choose if necessary: other guided tours of Umbrian cities, tastings and visits to wine bars, walking and pony trekking routes...participation in the activities on the Umbria Full Immersion programme is not obligatory, but as mentioned in the terms and conditions
