What is a definite article? – In Italian a “definite article” is the word for “the”. In Italian the word “the” takes different forms. Every word in Italian has a “gender” and depending on that “gender”, the article and ending may be different.

Masculine words –il – Il comes before most words that end in “o” and DO NOT start with a vowel, S + a consonant, or Z.

Examples: il ragazzo, il banco, il cancellino.

lo – Lo comes before masculine words that start with S + a consonant, or Z.Examples: lo stadio, lo zaino.

Femminine words –la – La comes before most words that end in “a” and DO NOT start with a vowel.Examples: la ragazza, la bandiera.

L’ -l’ – L’ comes before most words – BOTH MASCULINE AND FEMMININE – that start with a vowel.Examples: l’astuccio, l’albero.
