It’s Spring – and we’ve turned over a new leaf ! Because our goal is to provide the very finest senior lifestyles, Wesley Manor has– for more than 53 years – stood the test of time. Other facilities have come and gone ... and many have been sold ... but we are still doing what we do best: providing enriching lives for people, in gracious settings. We have succeeded because we have changed with the times and because we have been blessed with loyal, generous mission partners through the years. This has never been more dramatically illustrated than now, with the new panache we are enjoying in our Assisted Living Center. In late 2015, our goal was to raise over $200,000 to refurbish the Entry, Rotunda, Living Room and hallways of our Assisted Living Center. We met our objective and work began

on January 4. Three months later, we are celebrating our new décor and style– and not one penny of residents’ fees for services were used to fund these enhancements! Our project was

artfully guided by well-known designer Mary Cynthia Martin of Martin Durr Caldwell in Danville, KY. It has been entirely funded through the generosity of individuals, grants, foundations and bequests of our devoted mission

Couple enjoys staff in Health Care Center

Okolona Arts & Crafts Show coming soon!

Howard Moran was looking for a high-quality skilled nursing community for his wife, Lillie. As a pastor for 42 years, Howard had seen a lot of skilled nursing facilities and knew what qualities to look for. He had brought his church youth group to sing at Wesley Manor before the Health Care Center was even built. Howard added Lillie to the waiting list at Wesley Manor’s Health Care Center, where her name remained for a year. “I didn’t know what I’d find,” he said about his initial tour. “But once I came in I was convinced this was where she needed to be.” In the meantime, Howard drove 50 miles roundtrip to see Lillie at another facility (chosen by her hospital) every day. However, he felt there wasn’t enough staff available to give her the attention she required. He could hardly wait for a bed to become available at Wesley Manor. Finally, he got the call a few months ago that a bed was open. “I was so happy, I shouted ‘Halleluiah!’”

Lillie grew up in Munfordville and met Howard when they were teenagers. She had recently moved to Louisville for work as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph’s Infirmary. He had a job as a soda jerk. “She was walking down Crittenden Drive, I saw her and made a remark,” he recalled as if it were yesterday. “We palled around as friends and went to my dad’s church.” On October 16, 1948, Howard and Lillie embarked on their marriage adventure together, which they’ve enjoyed for 67 years. He would have a successful 40-year career as a “car man” for L&N Railroad, while still pastoring on the side. She would do housekeeping work in the Highlands. They had three children, and now enjoy their two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. “We’ve had a great life,” he said. “We did things together. I never kept anything from her, and she never kept anything from me.” Nowadays, Howard still faithfully visits his bride every day in the Health Care Center. And it’s only four miles from his house. He brings the family dog, Zena, along every day to provide even more comfort to Lillie. You can often find Howard walking Zena down the halls or outside on the lawn. “This is a haven to us,” Howard shared excitedly. One of the housekeeping staff even went the extra mile and moved a recliner chair for him to use in Lillie’s room. “There’s no place that would treat her any nicer. The people here have been fabulous—I have no complaints!” Y

Spring is here and that means lots of outdoor volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups. A 35-acre campus is wonderful for our residents, but it also requires significant upkeep such as landscaping, shrub trimming, mulching and weeding. This makes a great project for school, scout, church or corporate groups. Your group can do a one-time project or adopt an area, like a flower bed, to maintain throughout the growing season. Volunteers are also welcome to help with resident activities and visitations. If you or your group can help please contact Cliff Whalin, (502) 400-3228 or [email protected]. Y
