That is what Jesus said to his parents at the Temple in
Jerusalem and from that time forward He certainly did
concentrate on His “Father’s business.” For many Christians,
Christmas is when they rededicate themselves to God’s
work. But what is that work?
The Lord’s own words when He traveled later through
Galilee give us the best guidance for the good life. He said:
We should be humble.
Those full of sorrow will be comforted.
Those with a gentle spirit will inherit the earth.
We will be satisfied if we very much want to do right.
If we are forgiving of others, we will be forgiven in kind.
Those with pure hearts will see God.
Those who try to keep the peace are very close to God.
Throughout Jesus’ ministry He taught His followers to
believe, to have faith. How difficult that is for many of us
when we are challenged by so many persons and differing
ideas today.
Whether you work each day at home or in the community,
or are retired or whatever your station in life, you should
remember that we live in God’s creation. Therefore, all of
our activities should be part of our “Father’s business.”
Christmas was the
beginning. Perhaps it
can be the beginning of
the Christian life for
you, too. Give your
problems and your life
to God.

The child became a strong, robust lad, and was known for wisdom beyond his years; and God poured his blessings on him.”
At this time of year we Christians think of Christ and the
manger scene. The Bible account of Mary, Joseph, and
Jesus and their travel to Bethlehem is perhaps the best
known account of a family the world has ever known.
However, we know considerably less about the early life
of Christ. In fact, we next learn about Jesus when he was
12 years old when he stayed behind at the annual Passover
Festival in Jerusalem after his parents had departed for
Nazareth.
Christmas has a special message for all of us.
From a manger in Bethlehem to a cross at Calvary, Christ
prayed, praised and gave thanks for what God was doing
with His life on earth. We should do the same. When we
worship at Christmas we should remember Christ the
child, Christ the teacher, Christ the lord of us all.

Dear Friends from St. Barnabas Charities,
This is not a fancy letter, but it is from my heart.
I want to thank you for the blanket. I’m sorry my husband isn’t here to enjoy it. Two years ago when we came to Atria’s (Atria South Hills Senior Living) to live, they gave each one of us a blanket similar to this one. My husband was always cold, so he would put one over his head and shoulders, and the other over his lap and would watch TV for hours. He passed away last year on his 93rd birthday, Oct. 13th. It isn’t the same without him. We were married 64 years. And it’s hard to replace him. I am blessed to have five children close by and one in Ohio who keep in touch with me.
I know it takes a lot of work to do this for people and I do appreciate your time.

Having a cold or the flu is often
sheer misery. Despite the
sneezing, coughing and aching
all over, our busy lives must go on. We
still have to work, take care of kids and
generally not fall apart while just wanting
to lie down and go to sleep. Unfortunately
we also often neglect the proper nutrition
our bodies need to get well again.
What Nutrition Can Do for You
Nutrient-rich foods found in fruits and
vegetables, along with complex carbohydrates
for energy are critical for your diet if you
are sick. In hundreds of published studies
researchers have concluded that most cold
symptoms are caused by an inflammatory
response activated by a viral infection
invading the body. Cold treatments,
including foods, can reduce virus induced
inflammation and the severity of a cold.
Citrus fruits like oranges contain powerful
antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
molecules called bioflavonoids. Citrus
bioflavonoids also have anti-viral and
anti-allergy properties and are available
as dietary supplements.
Foods rich in beta-carotene and vitamins C
and E, found in many fruits and vegetables,
can reduce the inflammatory reaction
associated with colds. Since most Americans
a wide variety of viruses, but unlike colds,
vaccines are the mainstay to prevent this
illness. People who are immunized by a
flu shot will typically have less severe
symptoms if they become infected. Annual
flu shots are especially important for the
elderly who are at greater risk for flu
related complications.

Getting your next cold may be as close as
your next handshake. Avoiding a cold or
the flu completely may not be in our
power, but with the right amount of
preparation, prevention and nutritional
support, you have the best chance to keep
yourself healthy this winter.

fruits and vegetables a day, especially when
fighting a cold, supplements can be used
to provide the recommended amounts.
Maintaining hydration and nutrition during
a viral illness will boost the body’s strength
immune function to help reduce the
duration and intensity of the illness. Plenty
of rest, sleep, decongestants, saline nasal
sprays and gargling with warm salt water
or using lozenges can help relieve symptoms
and make you feel better. Taking aspirin
or acetaminophen can help with fever and
achiness in adults. Children under age 19
should not take aspirin during episodes of
fever-causing illnesses because of a risk of
developing a serious complication known
as Reye’s syndrome.

John Stewart Turnbull was a dedicated
man…dedicated to his wife Kay, to
his nieces Christy and Leslie and to
his great nephew Gannon and great nieces
Maddy, Lily and Holly. He was dedicated
to church and God. And fortunately for
St. Barnabas he was dedicated to his
fellow man, in particular to the patients
of St. Barnabas.
St. Barnabas’ mission of caring for the
injured, the sick, the chronically and
terminally ill regardless of their ability to
pay became his mission – first when he
joined the St. Barnabas Community
Advisory Committee in the 80s –
recruited at a pick-up basketball game
with St. Barnabas President Bill Day –
and then when he took on the Christmas
PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® Campaign.
Later John became Treasurer of the
St. Barnabas Board of Trustees, a position
he held until his death.
St. Barnabas President William V. Day,
who knew John so well, said, “He was
kind, concerned about so many folks
around him. And he was the king of
‘corn.’ Great sense of humor. His devotion
to St. Barnabas, to his family and to his
Christian life set him apart.”
The mission was personal with John. His
mother, Louise Turnbull, had been a FAITH & WORK 9
resident of The Village at St. Barnabas and
then a patient at St. Barnabas Nursing
Home. Kay’s mother, Katherine Bittner,
was also a nursing home patient and
later both Kay’s father and uncle used
St. Barnabas’ services. All are gone now
but John’s dedication to the mission and
to the patients remained strong.
No tribute to John would be complete
without including his and Kay’s dedication
to the Pittsburgh Penguins – long before
the Penguins were winners. Back in 1970
when you couldn’t give away Penguin
tickets, John and Kay never missed a
home game. Their great niece Maddy
could always identify their car on the
road – there was a box of tissues in the
back window and a Penguins sticker on
the bumper!
John was remembered at the Oct. 24
Penguin game, a unique honor for a
devoted fan.
All of St. Barnabas mourns the passing of
this very special man, but we thank God
for having known him.

defensive team, but he only played pre-season
and was sidelined with injuries.
“His name is still on the Steeler roster and
that counts,” Joan said with a touch of
Steeler pride.
Joan and Ed were married in 1953 and
started the small family she always wanted.
After serving in the Air Force Ed went into
coaching, first at the University of Maryland
under his old coach Jim Tatum and then
followed Tatum to North Carolina. Later he
worked for American Laundry Machinery
in New Jersey and for a short time following
his father’s stroke, ran the family business,
Suburban Dry Cleaning, in Bellevue.
Joan worked briefly for U.S. Steel as a
mail clerk and typist and manned the dry
cleaning counter in Bellevue to help out,
but she was happy being married and
taking care of her family.
“That’s all I ever wanted,” Joan explains.
“I was one of the lucky ones.”
Her sons, Ed and Mike, have followed in
their parents’ footsteps. Both are married
to the high school sweethearts they met in
ninth grade. And both follow the Fullerton
family rules!
St. Barnabas’ continuum of care has
made a difficult time a little easier for
Joan Fullerton, with the support of her
sons and their families. Please support

Edward lived by three rules of life:
Don’t lie – tell the truth.
Don’t cheat – follow the rules.
Don’t steal – only take what is yours
to take.
“We tried to do right and teach our sons
to do right,” Joan confided.
Her sons, Edward and Michael, say they
do remember and so will their children.
Joan lost her high school sweetheart, Ed,
early this year, following a fall and she is
still grieving for him.
She and Ed lived in The Village at
St. Barnabas for three years when health
concerns made it necessary for them to
move into living assistance at The Arbors
at St. Barnabas in Valencia. They made the
move in February of 2015 and then in
April Ed suffered a fall, was hospitalized
and died. It’s been a difficult time for
Joan. Fortunately, she likes the staff at The
Arbors very much and she has her sons
living nearby – Ed in Cranberry and Mike
in his parents former home in Ross
Township – and friends and neighbors
who visit often.
And she has her memories.
Joan and Ed met in ninth grade at West
View High School. She became captain of
the cheerleading squad and May Queen
and Ed was a star football player. He went
on to play college football for Jim Tatum
at the University of Maryland. Then Ed had
a short career with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The St. Barnabas Charities Fall Fashion event drew several hundred fashion-conscious
women to The Washington Place to shop with 38 boutique retailers and artisans, bid
on weekend getaways and tropical trips and try their luck with winning a designer
handbag or one of 24 fantastic baskets – all to raise money for the St. Barnabas Free
Care Fund.
The runway fashions in the Kean Theatre featured styles by Capriccio Squirrel Hill, One

Memorygiving in
Eileen Starr
Eileen Margaret Drennan Starr
earned a special place in the
hearts of the staff at St. Barnabas.
From the time she was first admitted to
St. Barnabas Nursing Home in March
of 2014 until she was discharged to
her home in April 29, 2014 with
St. Barnabas home care and eventually
with St. Barnabas hospice care, Eileen
was a favorite of the staff. Her wonderful
laugh, funny jokes, and caring nature
endeared her to everyone. During her
last days, Eileen worried about her
St. Barnabas nurse Renee Vanderberghe
driving home in the snow, never
about herself.
Eileen died on Feb. 23, 2015 leaving a
legacy of love. To her family she was
that super grandmother who read the
classics to her grandchildren, hosted
tea parties for the granddaughters and
talked football, especially Penn State
football, with the grandsons. To her
children – Eileen of Bowling Green, KY;
H. Paul, III, of Valencia; Linda of La
Jolla, CA; and Donna, of Kensington,
MD – she was a phenomenal mother,
gentle, nurturing with a great sense of
humor. And to her husband Paul of 62
years, a loving partner, traveling with
him all over the world
– to New Zealand,
Ireland, France, Great
Britain, Kenya,
Sweden, and to all but
one of the 50 states,
missing North Dakota.
A graduate of Penn
State, Eileen taught at
Mt. Aloysius College,
Cresson, PA, before
marrying Paul in
1953. Besides her
family and traveling,
Eileen loved
gardening, reading
and watching
Antiques Roadshow
and Dr. OZ on
television. She had
been a docent at Hartwood Acres, former
President of the St. Thomas in the Fields
Women’s Guild and a member of the
Butler Women’s Club.

Arbors at St. Barnabas. The Charities exists to enable St. Barnabas to
better respond to the health needs of the western Pennsylvania community.
The Charities’ resources help provide the finest personnel and latest
technology to the community to promote a better quality of life. The
Charities is accountable to those who support its activities and reports
regularly to these constituencies. Through the efforts of the Charities,
