PROJECT DEFINITIONUnder deregulated Turkish electricity supply arrangements, Intergen, a partnership of Bechtel and Shell joined forces with the Turkish ENKA group to bid for three power plants to be managed on a Build Own Operate base with all power produced to be sold to TEAS, the Turkish Electricity Authority for the first 20 years. Izmir is located about 200 km southwest of Istanbul on the Aegean Sea Coast in a popular tourist area. This power plant comprises two 765 MW blocks each with two GE Type 9FA+ gas turbines with a tri-pressure reheat steam cycle using HRSG’s designed by CMI and a 260 MW ALSTOM steam turbine. It was built in parallel with two other combined cycles, Gebze with two blocks and Adapazari with one, by the same group. A similar plant configuration is used but Izmir being on a coastal site is sea water cooled with mechanical draught cooling towers.

THE CONTRACTIn December 1999 CMI received a contract from the Intergen/Enka Group for the four HSRG’s for the Izmir site together with the six boilers for Adapazari and Gebze. The HRSG’s are of modular design; all pressure parts were fabricated in Europe and erected by local companies under CMI supervision.

PLANT OPERATIONCycling load operation despatched by TEAS. 8000 h/year.

GAS TURBINES• GE Type PG9351FA+• ISO rated 255.6 MW on natural gas• Site rated at 220MW on gas at 30°C. • Fuel: Natural gas

HEAT RECOVERY STEAM GENERATORS• CMI Vertical, Assisted-circulation design, unfired • Three output pressures with reheat to steam turbine• Full flow bypass to condenser at each pressure level • Stack 80 meters high• High seismic UBC zone 3
