Universities have a critical role to play in responding to the wide-rangingaims of the curricular framework, especially in emphasising and encouragingpluralism in education, addressing the needs of children, and integrating newcurricular areas. There is an urgent need to expand the knowledge base ofeducation keeping in view the diverse socio-cultural contexts to which childrenbelong as well as the complex nature of classroom realities in India. Universitydepartments of education, social science as well as the sciences should be urgedto include the study of education in their research agenda. Multidisciplinary andcollaborative research bringing together scholars from different disciplines wouldbe particularly important in generating a research base that is critical for translatingthe ideas in the curriculum framework into enabling classroom practices. At thesame time, universities need to keep their doors open to children coming fromschools with unusual and interesting combinations of study. Rather than usingadmission criteria to eliminate, they should remain inclusive and encouraging ofdiversity of interests, pursuits and opportunities. Such open and inclusiveadmission policies are also crucial if children are to seriously consider vocationalcourses of study as non-terminal options.

Institutions of higher education have an important role to play in teachereducation and in enhancing the professional status not only of secondary schoolteachers but also elementary school-teachers. For the, reflective teacher whopossesses the professional competence and orientation that the curriculumframework rests on, it will be necessary to review and restructure teachereducation programmes. Equally important will be the sustained involvement ofscholars in curriculum development, writing and reviewing textbooks as part ofa collaborative exercise, which brings together practitioners and academics withdiverse expertise. Higher education can also provide space for reflection, discussionand debate on educational ideas and practices as well as facilitate the interfacebetween schools and policy makers.
