the surfactants that are available in tandem with the RED BOX that has no peers anywhere in the world.

Having used the system to train a large number of new operatives within the industry the RED BOX demonstrates its versatility and for the ease with which operators pick up on its function.

My advise to you, if you face a horror of a strip (we’re talking insulating materials now), then it would be well worth giving serious consideration to the RED BOX system, the question you have to ask yourself is not “can

place on your license.

Like any thing else in life the tools are only as good as the persons using them, simply purchasing although PAS 60 compliant does mean that you are home and dry, “excuse the pun wet”.

The system comes with some unique functions, the ability to run independently from one manifold up to eight needle rigs comprising of

from the other rigs, each needle on each rig has up to 25 settings, the manifold has itself a master pressure valve so setting the pressure to the whole job will keep you compliant to the 50lb per square inch limit on delivery to the insulation materials, this means you can set the full array of needles for the complete job, as the resource is on site during site set up, you will then be able to redeploy the site set up team leaving behind the stripping crew, they can by the turn of a valve “wet” in series as the strip progresses, this will eliminate apart from the initial start of wetting, the dreaded allow to soak scenario we all feel as time wasted, the manifold also allows complete control of the entire system from within

surfactant mixing pump means that over use of the costly surfactant is a memory best forgotten.

My working background is within construction, the trades and as a plumber, and guess what there isn’t a volt in sight is, yep the RED BOX runs completely on water, all you need is the water pressure you would get from Fawcett “Tap” at home.

So in real terms of cost, lets take a look, water and surfactant we would use regardless of system, electricity on the other hand is no longer required = cost saving, transformers, extension leads, cable runners, PAT testing, risk assessments for electrical shocks and the mitigation required under legislation placed on employers = cost saving, add these

up and compare over the many years of service you will get from adding the RED BOX to your stripping arsenal, I know more than a few eye brows will be raised.

In summary, water technology and its uses in engineering is as old as the use of asbestos itself, so in an ever cost increasing world as this one, look at the 21st century with a solution that pre-dates the 1st century with the RED BOX from AsbestoStrip Innovations 01594 837755 e: [email protected]

ITN Issue 10

For everyone concerned; the patient, family, friends and health care professionals Mesothelioma is perhaps the most challenging of all cancers. Mesothelioma is preventable, dicult to diagnose and treat, debilitating and incurable.

Mesothelioma UK is a free, vital, specialist information, support and educational resource centre.

There has been very little research carried out into how best to treat Mesothelioma, resulting in a severe lack of clinical evidence. This has led to a variation in opinion amongst health care professionals about what treatments should be oered to Mesothelioma patients. Treatments available do not oer a cure and survival is usually measured in months rather than years.

Unlike other more common cancers most GP’s and community nurses will never care for a patient with Mesothelioma, and outside of specialist centres, hospital doctors and nurses rarely come into contact with the disease. Yet, perhaps even more so than with other types of cancer, when Mesothelioma enters an individual’s life, either as a patient, friend or family member, they have a desperate need for up to date informa-tion about the best treatments, the benets these can oer, where to access treatment, how to control pain and breathlessness, prognosis, survival and how to maximise their quality of life. Being an industrial disease there are complex benets and legal entitlements that need to be under-stood and claimed for. Advice about appropriate local and national services is also necessary to ensure patients and their families are completely supported throughout the illness and beyond.

This is why Mesothelioma UK exists.

All our services are free!

The centre coordinates communication and information about every-thing relevant to mesothelioma throughout the UK. We support any initiative that seeks to improve the life and experience of mesothelioma patients and their carers.

Our team includes a Consultant Nurse, a Helpline Assistant, a Fundrais-ing Manager and an Operational Manager. In 2010, we successfully

handled over 1,100 helpline and email requests and circulated 1,760 newsletters six times during the year. Each year, we organise the National Mesothelioma UK Patients and Carers Day, and numerous educational events for healthcare professionals. In this way, Mesothelioma UK is making a dierence to the lives of people aected by this disease, despite the appalling survival rates.

We rely totally on sponsorship and donations.

The Charitable Trust was set up solely to raise funds and provide nancial support to the National Mesothelioma Resource Centre (known as Mesothelioma UK) and to other initiatives to promote and protect the health of suerers of mesothelioma. If you would like more information about supporting Mesothelioma UK either through sponsorship or fundraising please contact Jill Lemon on freephone: 0800 169 2409 or e-mail [email protected].

Meso Warrior Debbie BrewerIt's November 13th 2006 and I am waiting in the hospital to be called into the Dr who is about to give me the most devastating news I could have ever imagine. I was called in to be told that the biopsy from my

asbestos.

Why, why now? I am 47 years old with 3 beautiful children, the youngest being autistic. Two of my children are with me, the youngest just wouldn't understand. I walked from the hospital in a state of shock. What do I do now? I feel so lonely and frightened. A few weeks later I saw the oncologist who told me that no amount of diet or lifestyle change would help me; I would have 6-9 months with my children.I told him in no uncertain terms that this was not acceptable. I was

I had lost my wonderful father 3 months before my diagnosis. He has pleural plaque and small cell lung cancer. He had chemotherapy, cancer slowly took the wonderful person I knew and changed him before my eyes. It turned a very young 68 year old into a frail old man, this is etched on my mind daily. I did not want my children seeing their mother go the same way.

I changed oncologists and was pleased to see that he supported my decision not to have chemotherapy. It would give me 3 months which would be full of illness and I had quality of life, why change it?In January 2008 it all started again, my mesothelioma was on the move. It was going around the heart. Again, I wasn't prepared to sit back and accept it. I did the rounds with the media in 2007, one of the shows was This Morning. A lady happened to be watching in hospital while her husband was having a biopsy done. This lady never watched morning TV, but this day she did and it changed my life completely. She saw my interview and recognised the symptoms I was explaining; she got in touch with me and told me that she and her husband would be search-ing the alternative route. They were not about to give up either. They went to see a naturopathic Dr and were considering a treatment in the Bahamas' or Germany; unfortunately the gentleman didn't make it. I was devastated and felt that I had to search this out in his memory.

I went to Harley Street as they did and was told by the Dr that a Professor in Germany was having great success with mesothelioma. I had the

that the treatment wasn't a cure but he might be able to help me. This lifted me so much, someone wants to save me, and this was all I wanted to hear. The treatment is called chemoembolisation/chemoperfusion and targets the tumour directly through the femoral artery. I returned for the second treatment in June 2008, The Professor asked me how I was feeling. I told him I didn't know if it was psychological or if there had

been an improvement but I was feeling much better. The Professor said

reduced by 10%. After 6 treatments, the last being in December 2008, 53% had reduced. In June 2009 another 30% had gone!

The Professor was stumped as to why but we were both so pleased with the result. I had a stable disease for 2 years. In January this year I returned to Germany for a 7th treatment as the mesothelioma had started to grow again. I am due to have a CT scan which I hope will show that I have again responded well. I would like to see this treatment

the Professor sees so many late stage patients, it is a gamble if it works. I am so lucky to have gambled and got it right. http://radiologie-uni-frankfurt.de/content/e1269/e2567/index_eng.html

ITN Issue 10

11th September 2001:On the 11th September 2001 a terrorist attack on New York City brought the World Trade Center crashing down. On that day thousands of people died inside towers, including rescue workers who went in to help.10 Years On:Now it is almost ten years after the event, and still people are dying and becoming ill from the aftermath of the falling of the towers. The Twin Towers were built from 1968 to 1972 and had large amounts of asbestos reproong including a slurry mixture of asbestos and cement that was sprayed on. This practice was banned by the New York City Council in 1971 but large amounts had already been used within the towers. It is estimated that the cost of removal of the asbestos within the World Trade Center would have rivaled the value of the buildings themselves, had they still been standing today.

When the Twin Towers fell, a region of several square miles was blanketed by ne powder, consisting of the pulverised remains of non-metallic components and contents of the towers, including signicant amounts of asbestos. Three days after the attack, an analysis found that some of the dust was four percent asbestos. This could prove to be a huge risk to public health as thousands of people breathed in the dust from the collapsed towers.

Many of the people aected by the asbestos dust are likely to be the police, re and voluntary rescue workers who risked their lives on September 11th to save the lives of others. Countless people exposed to the pollution are already suering from symptoms of respiratory illness today. These range from diculty breathing, coughing, asthma and even lung cancer and mesothelioma.

While still considered to be rare, instances of mesothelioma have undoubtedly increased in number. Asbestos, an organically occurring mineral, is the only known cause of mesothelioma. Once mined and used industrially because of its resistance to heat and exibility, the health eects of the mineral were not fully understood until the later part of the twentieth century. Because of this, asbestos was used throughout the 1900's in building and construction materials, shipyards, and automobiles. Additionally, because asbestos is a mineral found on most continents worldwide, very small quantities exist in our atmos-phere naturally. However, after the World Trade Center collapsed, the levels of airborne asbestos found in New York City were approximately 93,000 times higher than the typical amount of asbestos found in the air, making the risk of both exposure and illness extremely high.

Though much of the asbestos initially used during building was removed from the World Trade Center, it was still one of the most common materials used in the erection of the towers. Because of this, the attack caused over 2,000 tons of microscopic asbestos bres to be released into the air. Workers were advised that the bres are invisible to the naked eye, and to wear protective equipment which would help

keep them safe from exposure. However, many of those who were at ground zero, including volunteers, on lookers, rst responders and rescue workers, were not wearing safety equipment and were exposed to asbestos bres without their knowledge.

The attack caused over 2,000 tons of microscopic asbestos bres to be released into the air. Workers were advised that the bres are invisible to the naked eye, and to wear protective equipment which would help keep them safe from exposure. However, many of those who were at ground zero, including volunteers, on lookers, rst responders and rescue workers, were not wearing safety equipment and were exposed to asbestos bres without their knowledge.

When ingested or inhaled, asbestos bres become lodged in the mesothelial tissue in the body, or the protective membranes that line the body’s internal organs. While mesothelioma is most commonly found in the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), it can also aect the lining of the heart (pericardial mesothelioma), and the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). When exposure to asbestos occurs, the bres enter the body and act like splinters in the mesothelial membranes. Over time, as scarring and irritation occur, symptoms of respiratory illness will also become present. These symptoms include diculty breathing, coughing, fever, and chest pain.

The New York State Department of Health released a study in the beginning of 2008, stating that in the seven years since the attacks on the World Trade Center approximately 200 of those initially exposed to the pollutants at ground zero have passed away. The study also states that at least 55 of these workers were victims of lung cancer, and of all those exposed to the dust and debris after the attacks, at least 62% of people report trouble breathing and other respiratory complications.

Many respiratory diseases such as mesothelioma caused by asbestos can take years to present any symptoms, so we can only imagine how many lives will eventually be claimed by the attack on New York City, Septem-ber 11th 2001.
