Living next to a brewery, he quickly discovered alcohol, and a gas the brewing process gave off called carbon-di-oxide. He went on to discover oxygen. One night in 1772, while experimenting with some of the gases he'd already discovered, he mixed them all up and created new gas, nitrous oxide (N O), that 2
caused him to see clearer while feeling light-headed. He just could not stop laughing so he called it 'Laughing gas'.
Latham Mitchill, an American physician and chemist gassed a bunch of animals with nitrous oxide killing the lot; he proclaimed that it was not only poisonous, but also infectious and joined forces with the first lady to start the 'Just say no to NO' movement.
Then, came along, Humphry Davy, a 17 year old college student, who took a snootful of nitrous oxide and did not die, but nearly died laughing. He was a bright boy who immediately realized that a bothersome wisdom tooth felt just fine as he sucked on his laughing gas, when working part-time as a surgical assistant. At that time, a surgical assistant, had to be a strapping young man with a firm grip, since it was his job to hold the patient down-while the surgeon worked quickly. To dull the pain, many patients drank copious amounts of alcohol, or smoked opium or marijuana.
Pushing intoxicating drugs began catching on as an American Medical student Gardner, Quincy Colton, gave his first public demonstration of N O, for a sum 2
of $ 535.00. At one of Dr.Colton's lectures, a dentist attend by the name of Horace wells, who witnessed a man by the name, Sam Cooly, who after taking a lungful of gas, went berserk and tore about the room wildly, finally, landing next to Dr. Wells who immediately noticed Sam's bleeding leg that had happened, Sam replied, semi-coherently " Dunno".
Wells immediately saw the benefits of N O and 2
arranged for a general demonstration at
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Sadly, the world had to wait a bit longer for the first ever painless tooth extraction as poor Dr. Wells could not test his theory. He ran headlong into the surgery with students and administrator looking on. Well's might not have administered enough gas, for, the patient cried out during the procedure, destroying the Doctor's reputation. Wells retreated to his home a broken man where he wrote letter after letter to the heads of Dow chemical accusing them of replacing his N O with helium.2
In Well's audience, that Sunny day of 1845 was an astute pupil, by name of William Morton. He borrowed the technique of gassing patient into painlessness. The era of painless dentistry began.
Ether, an organic solvent, had been discovered by a Spaniard called Lullins. Then came along Dr. Crawford Williamson long from Jefferson, Georgia who while stored on ether fumes at a party, noticed that he had bruised himself but had felt no pain. On March 30, 1842 Long convinced at patient, James Venable with 2 cysts in the neck, to try a bit of ether. Venable sniffed the ether, passed out and Long operated, removing both cysts. The operation was a success.
Dr. long would have gained a pretty hefty reputation in history books had he published his results but he kept experimenting for the next 7 years and by the time he published in 1849, 2 people physician Charles Jackson and dentist William Morton had borrowed his techniques too and in Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital on Oct. 16, 1846, in front of an audience of famous surgeons, anaesthetised 2 patients successfully.
About this time, bitter arguments, heated up over who should be credited as the father of Anaesthesiology.
Today, in Boston, a statue stands erected to the father of Anaesthesiology. If you ever visit there, you will note, after walking around the statue, that there is no name listed. No one seems to agree on who should be credited as father of Anaesthesiology.

THE WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY
Dr. Shilpashri A. M.Assistant Professor,Dept. of Anaesthesiology
ctober 16 every year is celebrated as 'World
Anaesthesia Day'. It is a very auspicious day
for all the members of anaesthesiology Ofraternity as it is considered to be the birthday of
anaesthesia. On this day in the year 1846 the possibility
of performance of painless surgery was accepted by the
world.
William Thomas Green Morton, a student of Boston
Medical School Publicly demonstrated successful
administration of Ether anaesthesia for removal of a
neck tumor in Massachusett's hospital on 16th Oct 1846.
This became the opening act of the pain control story
and made possible for patients to obtain the benefits of
surgical treatment without the pain associated with an
operation. After that there was widespread research on
atmospheric gases that sowed the seeds for the
development of the branch of Anesthesiology.
Now the newer and safer version of the drugs with
sophisticated monitoring equipments for anaesthesia
delivery has become safer than before. Now the role of
anaesthesiologists have become vital.
An anaesthesiologist role have turned profound.
Anaesthesiology's scope of practice encompasses the
entire peri-operative experience from pre-operative
evaluation to intra-operative anaesthesia care to
recovery in post-anaesthesia care unit or ICU.
Additional venues for non surgical anaesthesia care
include the obstetric suite, chronic pain clinic and
intensive care unit. Anaesthesiologist are also into
teaching resuscitative skills and conduct of research.
So, Anaesthesia is a gift of science. It is needed in every
part of world. Therefore a day is dedicated in the whole
world whose aim is to spread the awareness and benefits
of anaesthesia. On the world anaesthesia day,
Aneasthesiologists all over the world are paying rich
tribute to ether and people who worked on it.
