Experiential learning
“Experiential learning takes place when a person
involved in an activity looks back and evaluates it,
determines what was useful or important todetermines what was useful or important to
remember, and uses this information to perform
another activity.”
John Dewey.

What is INNOVATION???
Innovation is the creation of better and effective
products, processes, services, technologies, or
ideas that are accepted by markets, governments
and society
INNOVATION FOR WHOM
These hands symbolizes the end user studied differently by large number of R& D and business development teams across the globe.
World’s Great Innovators
Page & Brin Bill Gates Sam Walton
Steve Jobs
Page & Brin
Kiichiro Toyoda
Bill Gates
Akio Morita
Sam Walton
Richard Branson Gordon Moore Jeff Bezos Michael Dell Pierre Omidyar
…what made them different is question?
They had a new
idea
A "new" idea is a combination of old elements.
' It is your ability to combine ideas in a unique way or to make useful associations among ideas.
History
Derives from Latin word innovatus which
means “to renew or change”
First researcher : Gabriel Tarde who defines it
as series of 5 steps:as series of 5 steps:
1. First knowledge
2. Forming an attitude
3. Decision to adopt or reject
4. Implementation/use
5. Confirmation of decision
InnovationInnovation is a process of taking new ideas to satisfied
customers. It is the conversion of new knowledge into new products and services.
Innovation is about creating
value and increasing efficiency,
"Without innovation, new products, new services, and new ways of doing business would never emerge, and most organizations would be forever stuck doing the same old things the same old way."
value and increasing efficiency,
and therefore growing your
business.
Principles of Innovation
 Ideas are fragile
 Ideas are organic
All ideas have value and should be given a hearing
The originator of an idea needs originator of an idea needs originator of an idea needs originator of an idea needs assistance in idea assistance in idea assistance in idea assistance in idea enhancement enhancement enhancement enhancement and in promoting the idea internally
Principles of Innovation…
The originator is the initial originator is the initial originator is the initial originator is the initial advocate of an idea and should advocate of an idea and should advocate of an idea and should advocate of an idea and should be actively involved in its be actively involved in its be actively involved in its be actively involved in its be actively involved in its be actively involved in its be actively involved in its be actively involved in its developmentdevelopmentdevelopmentdevelopment.
Only ideas which have been enhanced to demonstrate potential value will be brought to management.
Principles of Innovation…
Both marketing and technical issues need to be addressed in the development of an idea.
Differences among people Differences among people constitute a strength, not a weakness.
A mediator is often necessary to facilitate the communication of people from different cultures and who may possess clashing personalities.
Principles of Innovation…
Risk taking ability. Without risk no innovation can become a reality
Inclusion: ability to satisfy needs Inclusion: ability to satisfy needs of present as well as distant customers thorough fulfilling their needs.
Adoption: It is the greatest test of Innovation.
Process of Innovation
The Innovation process can be depicted as a series of funnels each getting progressively smaller.
Typically sixty ideas into the top funnel only produces just one innovation.
The funnels are labeled as the four phases in the process - idea generation, idea screening, feasibility and implementation.
Effectiveness Criteria for an
Innovation process
Implement a few ideas at regular intervals
Ensure feedback takes place - there must be
communication channels to originators.
Screening system should be simple, understood by
everyone
 Ensure the system is promoted
Transform ideas into reality at a reasonable speed - if
the system is too slow we may be too slow to react to
the market pace and turn off idea originators.

FORMS OF INNOVATION

Forms Of Innovation
Radical Innovation Incremental Innovation
Diffusion of Innovation
Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is
communicated through certain channels over time communicated through certain channels over time communicated through certain channels over time communicated through certain channels over time

It is a theory that seeks to explain how, why, and at
what rate new ideas and technology spread
through cultures
It is a 5 stage process viz., Knowledge,
Persuasion, Decision, Implementation,
Confirmation
Five Stages in Decision
Innovation Process
Diffusion
Knowledge Persuasion DecisionDecisionDecisionDecision
Reject
Accept
Implementation Confirmation
Stage 1 - Knowledge
In this stage the individual is first exposed to an
innovation but lacks information about the innovation but lacks information about the
innovation. During this stage of the process the
individual has not been inspired to find more
information about the innovation.
Stage 2 - Persuasion
In this stage the individual is interested in the In this stage the individual is interested in the
innovation and actively seeks information/detail
about the innovation
Stage 3 - Decision
In this stage the individual takes the concept of
the change and weighs the the change and weighs the
advantages/disadvantages of using the
innovation and decides whether to adopt or
reject the innovation. Due to the individualistic
nature of this stage Rogers notes that it is the
most difficult stage to acquire empirical
evidence
Stage 4 - Implementation
In this stage the individual employs the
innovation to a varying degree depending on the innovation to a varying degree depending on the
situation. During this stage the individual
determines the usefulness of the innovation and
may search for further information about it
Stage 5 -Confirmation
Although the name of this stage may be
misleading, in this stage the individual finalises misleading, in this stage the individual finalises
his/her decision to continue using the innovation
and may end up using it to its fullest potential
Ecology of Innovation
Seed cant become a tree in a desert
Life of an idea depends upon the surroundings, Life of an idea depends upon the surroundings, time and the culture
Infosys could get English educated cheap, young work force due to demographic transition in India
Risk and Innovation
Risk and innovation results in entrepreneurial
capabilities
Venture capitalism concept is nothing but
reward to innovative but risky idea
 Best example: Steve Jobs
Customer’s needs
What it needs to make an innovative product which is acceptable to different sections
Think about designing an I PAD…….. Think about designing an I PAD……..
Why to have a separate camera, mobile, computer, song player, GPS etc.
Innovation is bringing all these needs in one place.
 This is innovation.
I Pad
 64 GB space
 High resolution display
 Wifi, bluetooth
Video camera, recording Video camera, recording
 Sensors
 Speakers, microphone
 GPS
 Audio play back
 TV and video player
 Mail attachments support, language support
A few thoughts of mine
Creativity and Passion is at the heart of innovation
Integration of technologies and softwares is the mantra
Appropriate technology is a mirage Appropriate technology is a mirage
 One ERP, One India
Technology is the enabler and not the driver
 This is innovation.
