MN 2650 Acc. 7213A SOLARSKI, TONI (ANTHONY), 1920-1975 Toni Solarski was born in Obarzance, near Tarnopol, Poland on 16 December 1920. During the Second World War, at age 19 years, he was arrested by the Russians and sentenced to death, but was released when Germany attacked Russia and an amnesty was declared. He served in the Polish Second Corp which was part of the British Eighth Army and took part in campaigns in the Middle East and later in Italy. In 1946, Toni was accepted as an architectural student at the University of Rome, Italy. He completed his architectural studies in 1950 at the Polish University, School of Architecture, in London. He worked with Desmond Sands in the London office of Joseph Emberton c.1950 and when Sands returned to Perth in 1951 and established FGB Hawkins and Desmond Sands, he asked Solarski to join the firm. Toni worked there from 1954 until 1961. Toni had a high reputation as a designer, draughtsman and occasional part-time teacher. His drawing style in ink and pencil was especially alluring to architectural students. His designs include the rectory of St Lawrence’s Church in Dalkeith, the Anglican Church in Wyalkatchem and the The National Heart Foundation: Dream House. In 1961 Antoni was invited to join with Anthony Brand and Ronald Ferguson in an architectural firm, Brand, Ferguson and Solarski.
