DESCRIPTION
According to Merriam-Webster, Jaywalk means “to cross a street carelessly or at an illegal or dangerous place.” This definition perfectly encapsulated my DIY attitude. At any time I decided to do something great, it was never at an intersection with working traffic signals. I just looked both ways, stepped onto the asphalt and STRuTTED. Each quarter J-Walking will highlight my favorite creative arts entrepreneurs in beauty, entertainment, fashion and fitness from the Soda City and throughout the Southeast. Furthermore, a fashion editorial spread featuring yours truly will grace the pages of each issue.TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to the first issue of J-Walking magazine. Since 18 when I helped to develop my churchs first newsletter, I have desired to be a part of another publication. In the meantime, I waited for someone else to do it. So, finally after years of nurturing an unrealized dream, I determined to publish one myself.
According to Merriam-Webster, Jaywalk means to cross a street carelessly or at an illegal or dangerous place. This definition perfectly encapsulated my DIY attitude. At any time I decided to do something great, it was never at an intersection with working traffic signals. I just looked both ways, stepped onto the asphalt and STRuTTED.
Each quarter J-Walking will highlight my favorite creative arts entrepreneurs in beauty, enter-tainment, fashion and fitness from the Soda City and throughout the Southeast. Furthermore, a fashion editorial spread featuring yours truly will grace the pages of each issue.
In this inaugural issue, we spotlight the Southeasts best runway coach, Lolita Frazier, and her Loco Strut on page 21. Guest writer Kalyn Oyer gives us 5 Tips on Sifting through the Ttrash to Find Your Treasure on page 20. Finally, check my music review on one of my new favorites J. Wilss latest release, 125th Street on page 22.

JW: How did you get into modeling?
JW: Whats your favorite style of modeling?
JW: Whos your favorite fashion personality?
JW: What advice do you have for aspiring models?
LF: I was approached by someone at my daughters school who asked me to enter a model competition.
LF: Runway.
LF: Grace Jones. I love the fact that she was so raw and confident and was not afraid to be different.
LF: To model from the inside out! Do not base your decision to become a model to-tally off of your looks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Thrifting is a lot like dumpster diving, es-pecially at global hipster haven dives like Goodwill and the local charity store. Here are some tips to really find that one-of-a-kind article of clothing you are looking for that will set you apart from the crowd and give you that low-price-tag high.
1. We all know that the average Good-will is cheap, but you can get even MORE bang for your buck at Goodwill outlets, where there are literally bins upon bins of unsorted clothes. At these outlets, which you can find around Columbia, you usu-ally pay by the pound, so you can get like four or five lightweight items for under $2! Its pretty incredible. You can stumble upon so many awesome things if you dig in. But step onelayer up on the hand sanitizer.
2. The next most important thing to re-member at any thrift store is to set aside a large block of time, so you can really dig in and sort through whats in front of you. That pile of XXL mom jeans might just be hiding a chevron 70s sweater that will go perfect with your leggings and combat boots! Always dig deeper than your eyes initially allow.
3. Do some arm workouts to improve your stamina. Im serious. Lifting mega high piles of old wool sweaters can get pretty heavy once you end up doing it about 100 times in a row. Even the racks
Your Guide to Thrifting:5 Tips on Sifting through the Trash to Discover Your Treasure
can get a little daunting, pushing aside hanger after hanger to discover if that T-shirt really says I love chicks or I love dicks. Oh, and if you ever find a T-shirt that says either of those things, please dont buy it. Lets stick to cut-off high-waisted jeans and retro grandpa sweat-ers, please.
4. Avoid stains. Even if you find the cut-est thing ever, if it has a noticeable stain on it, then that is all you are going to be thinking about when you wear it. I mean, is it blood or ketchup? These are used clothes. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW! And no matter how much you tell yourself it will be able to come out in the wash, it wont.
5. Go for those wow items that really stand out. That doesnt mean they have to be tacky, but who cares if you pick up a boring white V-neck, even if it is only $3? Stretch yourself and your style and go for those vintage finds that you might not normally wear, but when you think about it you could pair it with something already in your wardrobe to make a really cute outfit.
Stay Nifty and Thrifty XOXO,
Kalyn

minimalist vocalizations that occurred only in the hooks and
bridges. Still, if all elevator music were like Elevator Music
more short trips in the vertical trolley would turn into joyrides.
The Metro sounds like an el train racing furiously above
the city packed tightly with people like sardines on a
busy Monday morning commute. In another serendipitous
track The Real, the audiophile feels that Billie Holiday
could suddenly jump on the hook. With an authentic
feel of one of Americas greatest periods of melin-
ated creative eruption, this album could have been
produced in the 1930s in the shop above Franks.
An ode to one of Harlems Black Renaissance icons,
Langston Hughes, Columbia-transplant J. Wils drops
an instrumental album thats a symphonic sancopha.
Just as the title alone evokes nostalgic memories remi-
niscent of Hughess eponymous poem of the creative
effervescence of black Harlem in spite of the oppres-
siveness of Jim Crow, the multi-talented artists con-
cept album runs the gamut of his musical diversity. A
triumphant blend of smooth jazzy samples with ATCQ-
ish snares and kicks, the Citadel graduate gives a
major salute to a few of his musical heroes through
this independently produced southern masterpiece.
Although 125th Street is an euphonious sonic transmis-
sion, the visionarys absentee lyricism is painfully conspic-
uous J. Wilss powerful wordplay that led the vanguard
of his 2013 release, Food for Thought was abandoned for
If the sophomore curse existed, then Charleston- na-
tive J. Wils must be blessed with immunity as he
delivered the divine utterance Food for Thought. It
seems the 23-year-old artist has developed a for-
mula to deliver amazing rhymes full of verve, rhythm
and expert marksman-like lyricism each time. And no
surprise when his musical influence are Cutrtis Mayfield,
Kayne West, Common, Bob Marley and The Roots.
On the opening track, the young spitter flexes his lyri-
cal muscle like an NPC body builder eyeing IFBB Pro
status. In Lab Rats, J. Wils and J.I. Beaty acrobati-
cally volley rhymes like a team of Cirque Du Soleil
trapeze artists. Reminiscent of the soul-baring Dra-
konian rap ballads, Deceiving describes a woman
leading a double life that reveals a heart cold-
er than Michigan. He impressively and skill-
fully evades using bitch as a synonym or de-
scriptor of this woman; although, he does admits that
hoes will be hoes. And Id have to admit I consulted
Merriam-Websters iphone app to find preterit. If
youre wondering like I was, it means in the past.
Throughout the album J. Wils builds on the use of
well-placed accenting vocalizations as opposed to
superfluous murmurings. However, Good and Evil is
the audiophiles aphrodisiac, a special treat thickly
layered with a be-bop intro interlaced well placed
uhs. The conscious spitter surfs the samples
soulful jazz melody like he hailed from the beaches
of Hawaii rather than the Holy City. And his Food
for Thought as foretold by his Prophecy were made
holy by the baptism of the waters of his hometown.
