Once upon a time there was a boy named Jack who went out to seek his ortune. He hadntgone very ar beore he met a cat.

Where are you going, Jack? said the cat.

I am going to seek my ortune. said Jack.

May I go with you? asked the cat.

Yes, said Jack, the more the merrier.

So on they went, Jack and the cat.

Jiggelty-jolt, jiggelty-jolt, jiggelty-jolt!

Tey went a little arther and they met a dog.

So on they went, Jack, the cat, the dog, and the goat.

So on they went, Jack, the cat, the dog, the goat, the bull, and the rooster.


And they went on jiggelty-jolting till it was about dark, and it was time to think o some place where theycould spend the night.

Now, aer a bit, they came to a house. Jack told his companions to be quiet while he wentup and looked in through the window to see i it was sae. And what did he see through thewindow but a band o robbers seated at a table counting over great bags o gold!

"Tat gold will be mine," said Jack to himsel.

Ten he went back and told his companions to wait till he gave the word, then make all the noise they possi-bly could. So when they were all ready Jack gave the word. Te cat meowed, the dog barked, the goat bleat-ed, the bull bellowed, and the rooster crowed. All together they made such a terric noise that the robbersjumped up in a right and ran away, leaving their gold on the table. So, aer a good laugh, Jack and his com-panions went in the house and kept the gold.

Now Jack was a wise boy. He knew that the robbers would come back in the dead o the night to get theirgold. So when it came time to go to bed he put the cat in the rocking-chair, he put the dog under the table,he put the goat upstairs, he put the bull in the cellar, and told the rooster fy up on to the roo.

Ten he went to bed.

Now sure enough, in the dead o the night, the robbers sent one man back to the house to get their gold. Butbeore long he came back in a great right and told them a earsome tale!

I went back to the house, said he, and tried to sit down in the rocking-chair. Tere was an old woman knit-ting, and she oh my! She stuck her knitting needles into me!

(Tat was the cat, you know.)

Ten I went to the table to look or the gold, but there was a shoemaker under the table. Hepunched his awl into me!

(Tat was the dog, you know.)

So I started to go upstairs, but there was a man up there threshing. He knocked me downwith his fail!

Ten I started to go down to the cellar, but there was a man down there chopping wood.He knocked me up and he knocked me down just terrible with his axe!

(Tat was the bull, you know.)

But that didnt bother me as much as the awul little ellow on the top o the house by thekitchen chimney, who kept hollering, Cook him in a stew! Cook him in a stew! Cook him ina stew!

(And that, of course, was roosters cock-a-doodle-do.)

Ten the robbers agreed that they would rather lose their gold than meet with such a ate; sothey ran away. Jack went happily home the next morning with his gold.
