CAPTAIN J. R. S. GERARD-PEARSE, R.N.

Captain Gerard-Pearse, who has two brothers in the Service, joined the Royal Navyfrom Clifton College, Bristol, as a special entry cadet. His early career was spent in H.M. ShipsBIRMINGHAM, CHARITY, ALAMEIN and DEVONSHIRE, and he was first lieutenant of theHEADINGHAM CASTLE and the CONCORD.

As a Lieutenant-Commander he trained cadets at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, andcommanded the anti-submarine frigate H.M.S. GRAFTON. Promoted Commander in June, 1960,he became Staff Operations Officer to the Flag Officer Flotillas, Mediterranean, and following anappointment at the Ministry of Defence he took command of the destroyer H.M.S. DEFENDER.

Promoted Captain in June, 1966, he commanded H.M.S. LOCHINVAR, the Royal NavalBase at Port Edgar until 1968. He assumed command of H.M.S. FEARLESS in April, 1969.

Captain Gerard-Pearse is married and has two sons and two daughters. Their home is at WestMalling, Kent.

Captain Gerard-Pearse writes: "It is never easy for the ship, or indeed the new CommandingOfficer, when the Captain joins in the middle of a commission. However for my part I knew that I wasfortunate in taking over a happy and efficient ship and it was clearly my main concern to maintain this.

Just over twelve months away from home, with some good visits in the Far East, was the plannedprogramme. During the East of Suez leg we have visited or, at the time of writing hope to visit,Capetown, Singapore, Hong Kong, Borneo, Tokyo Austral ia, Bangkok, Penang, Bahrain andDurban. We have of course done some work between visits and sometimes a great deal during visits!

Together with the West of Suez leg this surely satisfies our main reason for joining the Navy?To see the world.

I am sure that you will all remember this commission for a variety of reasons but I suggestthat the lasting impressions of baths in Japan, or girls in Fremantle will enable you to spin a verygood yarn.

I hope that I will have the chance to meet many of you again and I would like to take thisopportunity of wishing you all the best of luck and a good draft chit."
