Who is this?

Between August and November 1888,the Whitechapel area of London was the scene of five brutal murders. The killer was dubbed 'Jack the Ripper'. All the women murdered were prostitutes, and all except for one - Elizabeth Stride - were horribly mutilated.

“The mutilated remains of a female were lying two-thirds over towards the edge of the bedstead nearest the door. She had only her chemise on, or some underlinen garment. I am sure that the body had been removed subsequent to the injury which caused her death from that side of the bedstead that was nearest the wooden partition, because of the large quantity of blood under the bedstead and the saturated condition of the sheet and the palliasse at the corner nearest the partition. The blood was produced by the severance of the carotid artery, which was the cause of death. The injury was inflicted while the deceased was lying at the right side of the bedstead”

This was the description of Dr. George Bagster Phillips who was present at Jane Kelly’s murder place on November 9th.

This was the last murder associate to “Jack the Ripper”. But the legend had just begun...

During the investigations of this crime, it was soon attached to 4 other brutal murders of prostitutes occurred in that area containing very similarities.

All the London police was hunting a man who became known as “Jack the Ripper”, many suspects were dubbed in this terms during the hunt. But before this assassin was known as “Leather apron”

August 31th, 1888 Polly Nichols' body is discovered in

Buck's Row by Charles Cross, a carman, on his way to work at Pickfords in the City Road., and Robert Paul who joins him at his request. "Come and look over here, there's a woman." Cross calls to Paul.

September , 8 1888 Annie's body was discovered a

little before 6.00am by John Davis, a carman who lived on the third floor of No.29 Hanbury street with his family.

She was 47 years old at the time of the death.5' tall, Pallid complexion, blue yes and dark brown wavy hear.

Her friend Amelia Palmer described her as "sober, steady going woman who seldom took any drink." She was, however, known to have a taste for rum.

Miss Lyons claims to have had a drink with a man she suspected to be 'Leather Apron' at the Queen's Head pub.

Dr. Cowan and Dr. Crabb inform police that they believe Jacob Issenscmid to be the Ripper.

Edward McKenna is arrested in connection with the Ripper murders, but is released soon after.

Dr. Philips suggests the uterus of the woman might have been removed for sale to a medical student who had been inquiring about obtaining such specimens. The Inquest was adjourned until the 26th.

Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes killed at 1:00 and 1:45 am, respectively.

September 30th, 1888 At the time of her death she was 45 years

old. She had a pale complexion, light gray eyes and had curly dark brown hair. All the teeth in her lower left jaw were missing and she stood five foot five inches tall.

Eddowes is suffering from Bright's Disease, a form of Uremia. Friends spoke of Catherine as an intelligent, scholarly woman but one who was possessed of a fierce temper.

She was 46 years old at the time of her death.

5 feet tall, has hazel eyes and dark auburn hair. She has a tattoo in blue ink on her left forearm "TC."

The murderer is sometimes thought to have made contact by letter with several public figures. These letters, like the chalk message, have never been proved to be authentic, and may have been hoaxes.

The morning issue of the Daily News first prints the text of the “Dear Boss” letter.

“Dear Boss,I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. I am down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I cant use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope ha. ha. The next job I do I shall clip the ladys ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight. My knife's so nice and sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good Luck.”

Whether or not the letter is a hoax, it is the first written reference which uses the name "Jack the Ripper" in reference to the Whitechapel murderer.

November 9th, 1888 - Mary Jane Kelly was approximately 25 years old at the time of her death which would place her birth around 1863. She was 5' 7" tall and stout. She had blonde hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. "Said to have been possessed of considerable personal attractions."

She was last seen wearing a linsey frock and a red shawl pulled around her shoulders. She was bare headed. Detective Constable Walter Dew claimed to know Kelly well by sight and says that she was attractive and paraded around, usually in the company of two or three friends. He says she always wore a spotlessly clean white apron.

These are often referred to as the 'canonical five' Ripper murders, although

Martha Tabram, stabbed to death on 6 August 1888, is considered by some “ripperologists” to be the first victim.

She was probably 39 years old at the time of the death and was killed in George yard buildings.

Francis Tumblety flees to France, and then to America under the name 'Frank Townshend.'

There has been much speculation as to the identity of the killer. It has been suggested that he or she was a doctor or butcher, based on the evidence of weapons and the mutilations that occurred, which showed a knowledge of human anatomy. Many theories have been put forward suggesting individuals who might be responsible. One theory links the murders with Queen Victoria's grandson, Prince Albert Victor, also known as the Duke of Clarence, although the evidence for this is insubstantial.

A quarter of a mile from the scene of Catherine Eddowes' murder, the words: “The Juwes [sic] are not the men to be blamed for nothing” ,were found scrawled on a wall in chalk, and it was suggested this was written by the killer. A police officer ordered the words to be removed, fearing an anti-Semitic backlash in an area with a large Jewish population.

Jack the Ripper was never caught and he is not thought to have killed again after November 1888.

Despite of, there are some other cases associate to Jack the Ripper.

Violence to prostitutes was not uncommon and there were many instances of women being brutalised, but the nature of these murders strongly suggests a single perpetrator.

The writer Alan Moore wrote “From Hell”, book in which he defend the theory that Jack is William Gull, the Royal Family Doctor. This version turned into the movie by the same name

William Gull was a doctor, so he knew the human anatomy, like the assassin supposed to know. And as a Royal family’s doctor he could use an official coach and could run away without being stopped.

As the crimes finished without any pointed guilty, many people suspected the grandson of Queen Victoria was the guilty. He had fame to be vagrant and mentally ill. Some people told he used to frequent the Whitechapel brothels.

The writer of “Alice in wonderland” is pointed as a suspect form some studious of his works. As clues, they use some anagrams and pieces of “Alice”. They also went back to Carol’s adolescence. He used to be a young man of promiscuous relationships with women.

He had a barbershop at the neighborhood where the ripper acted. By the year he lived in New Jersey, USA, there were murders there similar to Jack ones. Fifteen years after he was condemned by poisoned his wives.

There were some reports saying that his own family believed that the lawyer and professor from high society Druitt, was the identity of Jack. He was considered sexually insane and he had an office in Whitechapel. He committed suicide throwing himself on Thames River, as sooner the last victim was killed.

As several surgeons in Whitechapel, Tumblety was arrested during the months of the deaths. The crimes stopped when he decided to move to the USA. After his death, were found some rings that could be from his victims

According to American detective writer, Patricia Cornwel, one of the screens of this famous English painter describes the last death. Another evidence is a letter supposed to be assigned by Jack, it was written on a paper from the same brand used for the painter.

According to Patricia Cornwell, This is jack The Ripper, but there’s no much concordances about it.

According to the American former lawyer John Morris, Lizzie killed he victims in order to vengeance her impossibility to have children. By the way Lizzie or Elizabeth Williams was wife of one of the most famous suspects described here :Dr. William Gull, the Royal Family Doctor.

As one of several evidences Morris state that she committed some crimes being supported by her husband.

John Morris believes there’s a reason Mary Kelly was targeted – and why the killing spree ended with her death. Lizzie’s husband, Sir John, who ran abortion clinics in Whitechapel, was having an affair with her.

Despite of all the evidences pointed by the “ripperologists”, they never arrived into an unquestionable guilty.

Jack the Ripper’s identity is still one of the greatest mysteries of the 19 and 20th century.

Jack is still unknown, maybe he will be forever unknown. But this is not reason for stopping looking for a suspect. Each single researcher has his own guilty.
