A Report to Our Members 2016-2017
The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) supports the careers and
professional development of government finance professionals working in federal,
state and local governments as well as the private sector and academia. Founded in
1950, AGA currently has over 100 local chapters throughout the U.S. and around the
world. AGA enjoys a long history as the thought leader for the government
accountability profession. Through education, research, publications, certification
and conferences, AGA reaches thousands of professionals and offers more than
100,000 continuing professional education (CPE) hours annually.
AGA members, approximately 14,000, are local finance directors, state auditors,
federal chief financial officers, academicians and private sector leaders. They all join
for the same reason—access to the organization that represents the breadth of the
profession.
The Jackson Mississippi Chapter, a local part of the international organization, was
chartered in 1974 making it one of the oldest chapters whose primary membership
has always come from the state and local government sector.

How Has Jackson AGA Progressed?
Education
The Jackson Chapter’s primary goal for fiscal year 2016-2017 was to provide quality education and training. Two approaches were used: guest speakers at regular chapter meetings and a spring conference. Over 600 members and guests attended our regular meetings, spring conference and annual tax seminar. Topics covered included federal and state tax law updates, state budget, Medicaid, and economic outlook, Data-driven metrics, ethics, and other timely topics. The chapter
met its goal of providing 20 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) hours during the year.
Service
CGFM Certification
The Jackson Chapter is committed to advancing the CGFM as the preferred professional designation for the government financial management and accountability community. Governor Phil Bryant issued a Proclamation declaring March 2017 as CGFM Month in Mississippi. The Chapter purchased a set of the revised CGFM Study Guides available to loan to members wishing to begin preparation for the CGFM examinations. The rules for borrowing this set of guides has been developed and can be located on the Chapter’s website.
National Involvement
Chapter Officers Brandi Stuart and Yolanda Campbell attended the Sectional Leadership Meeting in Kansas City in May 2017
Brandi Stuart, Yolanda Campbell, and Billy Morehead attended the 2017 PDT in Boston, MA Billy Morehead is a Past National President and Past National Treasurer; he has served as
Chair of the Journal Editorial Board from 2013-2017; and, served on the 2016 Strategic Planning Group.
Scholarship
Each year, the Jackson Chapter awards educational scholarships to a student majoring in accounting or another business-related subject at one of Mississippi’s colleges or universities. The various institutions of higher learning are contacted to ensure their awareness and submission of applications. Selection is then made from the applicants by the Scholarship Committee specially formed from Chapter members. The chapter awarded two $750 scholarships in 2016-2017 to
Quintilla Bishop, DSU graduate student and to Bailey Matthews, DSU undergraduate student.
