Th e Z Condiuminium is a large building complex with a theatre on the entry level and a residential tower above. Th e sloped confi guration of the building allows public accessibility to the rooftop. When ascending the ramp, the users circulate around the public plaza and view the activity occurring in the outdoor cafe seating area, ice rink and open playing fi eld below. In addition, there are green terraces dispursed intermittently in the residential tower to provide private garden spaces for the residents.

Botanical SCENTerTh e Portlands, Toronto, Ontario

Th e Botanical Scenter is located in Portlands, Toronto Ontario. Th e botanical garden is dedicated to the study of olfactory properties in diff erent plant species. Th rough a series of topographical changes, various atmospheric planes are created to enhance and capture plant smells. Th e Botanical Scenter is an interactive facility shared amongst many users, including humans, animals, and insects. Th e plant scents range from repugnant to pleasantly aromatic, and part of the experience in the garden is to refl ect upon how one reacts and responds to the smells emitted by the diff erent plants.

Th e Botanical Scenter houses twelve diff erent plant species. An investigation on the animal and insects’ attraction and repulsion to these specifi c plants was conducted to develop the organization of the programme. Th e progammatic spaces include a plant nursery, cafe, botanical garden, archive and auditorium.

Th e Vignette is a pedestrian bridge that allows access to a local park from a residential neighbourhood across the river. Th e overpass is a biomimetic structure that immitates the spiralling characteristics of vines. Potted plants are fastened to the structural steel members and the foliage grows along the curvature to simulate the illusion of the bridge being one large vine.

A Writer’s ResidenceSpragues Road, Cambridge, Ontario

Th e Writer’s Residence is a temporary live and work studio designed for a writer. Th e shelter is situated on a gently sloping hill that overlooks the meadow and forest by Taylor Lake on the outskirts of Galt, Cambridge. Th e building geometry is created from intersecting prisms to create voids and protrusions. Intimate spaces for contemplation and repose are delineated by these moments of intersection within the larger volume.

Th e building is constructed of concrete and heavy timber. Th is modest home is comprised of a living space on the ground fl oor and a private studio on the upper level. Featured within the building are tall built-in bookshelves lined against the north and west wall to encourage knowledge exchange between transient occupants.

Faculty of ScienceUniversity of Calgary, Calgary, AlbertaToker + Associates

I partook in the renovation project of the Faculty of Science building at the University of Calgary. My responsibility in the project was to develop a design scheme that was a good representation of the Faculty of Science. During the design process, I produced working design drawings, presentation and sample boards, and selected fi nishes.

Th e renders were produced after multiple revisions of the design concept with my team members. Renders of the Faculty of Science lobby entrance, second fl oor lobby, kitchen and offi ce workspace, and selected fi nishes were presented to the client on presentation panels.

Th e 7th Day Adventist Church is a mixed use building that incorporates a Catholic Church with a community center. I was involved in the schematic design stage with the principal architect. In addition to developing the building programme, I also designed the exterior elevation and produced rendered drawings for client presentations.

28 Study

Th e King’s College Chapel is a chapel in the University of Cambridge. Th e historical building epitomizes the style of late Perpendicular Gothic English architecture. Emphasis on vertical lines, large stain glass windows and intricate fan vaults are distinguished features in the chapel. A 1:100 scale model is built to encourage the study of architectural history in detail. Th e structural elements are revealed from a section cut down the center of the building.

33Study

Th e process of design is an acquisition of information. Th e System Stalker Lab explores the art of processes by acquiring, parsing, fi ltering and mining information of an observable, dynamic phenomenon. Th e

basic motion of typing is an intrinsic action to modern man, however the embodied properties of its nature are often overlooked. Th is project, Th e Quick Brown Fox, investigates the behaviours of typing on

a keyboard. A base documentation of two diff erent test subjects engaging in typing is collected by visually tracking a series of photographed image frames to translate the qualitative data into its text and numeric

form. From the emergence of this quantitative information registered in the parsing phase, an analytical critique can begin to materialize.

In order to mine the characteristic properties of typing, this simple human gesture is explored at a macro and micro level. Th e numerical and graphical relationship of the keyboard to the entire hand, individual keys to the fi ngers,

fi nger position to speed are several variables considered in this analysis. In exploring the comparative strategies of typing between two people, the relationships between hand/fi nger displacement and time are understood.

Th e subsequent phase to the fi ltration process is to design a 3-dimensional form that is representational of the relationships generated in the earlier stages of the investigation. Th is 3-dimensional structure is defi ned by the logic founded from observations and rules that are deployed to create a sequential transformation manifested in three planar axes.

Th e Gifu Kitagata Apartment case study intends to understand the organization of large urban complexes. Th is building is a social housing project set as a precedent in Japan to digress from the traditional convention of massive building units. In documenting and investigating the functional programs and building elements of the Gifu Kitagata Apartment, insight on spatial arrangements and urban residential patterns are acquired.
