Piñata Posada at 3pm

The posadas are a very strong Latin America tradition where, during the nine days before Christmas, the journey of Joseph and Mary seeking shelter so that the baby Jesus could be born is commemorated. The last day that is celebrated is on Christmas Eve. During this season, Nativity scenes are repre-sented with creative installations that show the place where Jesus was born and the Three Wise Kings are approaching. The mixture between art crafted elements and religious motifs along with creative imagery enrich these festivities, the most anticipated in the Christian world. During these days hot fruit punch and candy are shared when the litanies are finished and the pilgrims, simulating the seeking of shelter, are ready to break up the piñatas. This is the first time we host las Posa-das en Pilsen, on the same date that the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Queen of America and Patron Mother of Mexico, is celebrated.

PILSEN soundtrack 1.0

The fourteen songs of Pilsen Soundtrack 1.0, truly represent the wide and eclectic spec-trum of musical tendencies that are emerging in Pilsen, a Chicago neighborhood that was the port of entry for many immigrants who arrived perhaps not laden with material goods, but carrying within them their art: melodies, rhythms and musical memories of their home-lands, which soon emerged and were shaped by the experiences of the new land. Fandanguero, Son del Viento and Tarima Son are bands that are rooted in Veracruz’s centuries-old son jarocho genre, which emigrated from Mexico to Chicago in the 80´s. However, each of these bands takes the son jarocho in new and original directions: Fan-danguero integrates Cuban and flamenco sounds; Tarima Son explores the sounds from other states in Mexico such as Guerrero, Michoacan, Hidalgo, Jalisco, and Son del Viento highlights the windy city´s own emerging “JaroChicagoan” tradition. Azul de Noche con-tinues the blues en español tradition which exploded in the capital city of Mexico in recent decades, now steeping it in Chicago’s blues; and in contemporary mestizajes, Benjamin Anaya and the United Strangers mash up the tropics in electronically-tinged bossa nova. Latino alternative scene are well-represented by Los Vicios de Papá, Chicago´s pioneer and premiere Latin ska band, as well as LFT, a band exploring hip-hopped indie sounds, telling the story in the poetry of two languages and perhaps summarizing the CD best: “Estoy tumbando las barreras, estoy cruzando las fronteras, estoy buscando la man-era… I am breaking down barriers, we are looking for a better way, I have already crossed your borders”. This is ultimately the story the compilation tells beautifully and musically: Barriers have been broken down, borders have been crossed, and a better way is being found through the arts and through the music.
